You have to hand it to the folks at All Tomorrow’s Parties, they really know how to program and produce amazing events. Continuing their never-ending streak of fine concert festivals, ATP has announced a very unexpected special guest for their upcoming event—and when I say “upcoming” I mean July 2016—in Ásbrú, a former NATO base in Keflavík, Iceland. It’s none other than the great horror director—and musician—John Carpenter, who will be performing his soundtrack music live for the very first time

Via Fact:

The director and composer behind Halloween, Escape From New York and Assault on Precinct 13 will perform his classic soundtracks and songs from last year’s originals album, Lost Themes, at the festival.

The musical retrospective will mark the first time Carpenter has performed his music live, which is something of a coup for the beleaguered festival. He’ll be joined onstage by his son Cody Carpenter and his godson Daniel Davies, both of whom co-recorded Lost Themes, in addition to a full live band and “spectacular stage production.”

You can get tickets for ATP Iceland at their website. They’ve also got an event in Wales coming up next April curated by British stand-up god Stewart Lee, a man known for being a bit of a rock snob, so this seems promising indeed even if the acts aren’t listed yet.

Nick Cave, coolest man alive, falls right on his ass during concert in Iceland

One of the highlights of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ current set list as they tour in support of their fine Push the Sky Away album, is the astonishing “Jubilee Street,” one of the best songs Cave and crew have ever done. It brought the fucking house down when I saw them in Los Angeles earlier this year.

But at the All Tomorrow’s Party show in Iceland recently, after some particularly frenzied dancing that would put men half his age to shame, the Black Crow King made a wrong step and fell off the stage. Hard. (This happens around the 8:40 mark. You’ll note what he’s singing as he drops: “I’m flying. Look at me now. I’m flying. Look at me now.” Whoops!)

But have no fear, no mere mortal he, Cave returns to the stage almost immediately and finishes the song with all the aplomb of a demonically possessed Jerry Lee Lewis. Christ, talk about a recovery! Even falling on his ass in public garners Nick Cave more cool points!

There are still tickets available for the Greg Dulli curated “I’ll Be Your Mirror” rock festival that’s happening in NYC this coming weekend. “I’ll Be Your Mirror” is an offshoot of the artist-curated “All Tomorrow’s Parties” fests and the line-up for this one is especially good. The three nights of the Dulli/ATP co-curated “I’ll Be Your Mirror” shows will take place at Pier 36 in Lower Manhattan.

R&B performer/songwriter Frank Ocean is the headliner of the Friday night opening show: the reformed Afghan Whigs top the bill the following night and Sunday night Godspeed You! Black Emperor headline (It’s The Magic Band, yes, players from Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band, who I see as the real draw that night. No offense to anyone else, but The Magic Band? Count me in!)

Quite a line-up:

Friday 21st:
FRANK OCEAN
PHILIP GLASS & TYONDAI BRAXTON
JANEANE GAROFALO
LIGHTNING BOLT
LEE RANALDO’S ‘HANGING GUITAR’
HANNIBAL BURESS
EDAN THE DEEJAY
KURT BRAUNOHLER

Saturday 22nd:
THE AFGHAN WHIGS
THE ROOTS
JOSÉ GONZÁLEZ
MARK LANEGAN BAND
DIRTY THREE
THE ANTLERS
CHAVEZ
THE DIRTBOMBS
SCRAWL
EMERALDS
JOSEPH ARTHUR
VETIVER
CHARLES BRADLEY AND THE EXTRAORDINAIRES
AFTERHOURS
DJ QUESTLOVE

Sunday 23rd:
GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR
THE MAKE-UP
HOT SNAKES
THE MAGIC BAND
AUTOLUX
THEE OH SEES
THE ALBUM LEAF
LEE RANALDO (Full Band Show)
BRAIDS
THE PSYCHIC PARAMOUNT
QUINTRON AND MISS PUSSYCAT
TALL FIRS
BLANCK MASS
ENDLESS BOOGIE
DEMDIKE STARE
DJ JONATHAN TOUBIN

Tickets on sale now, priced at $199 for the entire weekend. A limited amount of day passes are also available priced at $60 for Friday & $75 for Saturday/Sunday. (Friday runs from 5pm-midnight; Saturday and Sunday run from noon-midnight)

Below, the Afghan Whigs tear if up at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC back in May with a cover of Frank Ocean’s “Love Crimes.” I’ve heard from several people that their shows since reforming have been amazing and this clip is certainly a testament to that buzz:

Update: I cannot get this song out of my head.

For over a decade now, All Tomorrow’s Parties have been responsible for some of the best line-ups you’ll see at any rock festival. Their events in the UK, Europe, Australia and the US have featured artists like Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Mike Patton, My Bloody Valentine, Portishead, Sonic Youth, Slint, and Tortoise (Simpsons creator Matt Groening even curated one of their festivals). Now ATP is doing a new series of artist-curated music festivals called “I’ll Be Your Mirror” (the flipside to “All Tomorrow’s Parties,” geddit?) in various cities around the world. (ATP is famous for staging festivals at holiday camps, the “I’ll Be Your Mirror” shows are sans accommodation.)

The third week of September, in New York City, Greg Dulli, of the newly reformed Afghan Whigs (said to be absolutely ferocious in their recent shows) will be doing the selection with ATP. The three nights of the Dulli/ATP co-curated “I’ll Be Your Mirror” shows will take place at Pier 36, a newly renovated $13 million dollar indoor concert venue near the East River in Lower Manhattan. I haven’t been there yet, but frankly, the notion of an indoor music festival seems way more attractive than an outdoor one, I gotta say (Give me air-conditioning or give me death).

And speaking of heat, last week, ATP announced that hot as a pistol R&B performer/songwriter Frank Ocean was joining the line-up as the headliner of the opening Friday night show, via Dulli’s invitation.

It’s a hell of a line-up, I think you’ll agree…

The Afghan Whigs have released a powerful new cover version of Frank Ocean’s “Lovecrimes” which can be downloaded at the ATP website.

Professional and amateur footage captured with cell phones, camcorders and Super 8 from over 200 sources combine to create the kinetic documentary All Tomorrow’s Parties. Compiled by director by Jonathan Caouette (Tarnation), ATP is a tightly edited collage of live performances, interviews and archival movies which captures the D.I.Y. spirit of one of the best and most fiercely independent music fests on the planet.

With performances by Grinderman, Dirty Three , Sonic Youth, Animal Collective, Lightning Bolt, Patti Smith, Portishead, Slint, Mogwai, Grizzly Bear, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Iggy and The Stooges.

And for our Spanish speaking friends, it has Spanish subtitles.
