The complete set of Famous People 1869-1969: 50 of the Greatest Britons, my dog-eared album of collectible picture postcards, which came free with packets of Brooke Bond tea in the 1960s. Like most children at that time, I collected these little potted biographies, trading duplicates in the schoolyard. Interesting the people we considered “famous” back then, compared to the kind we describe as “famous” today. Though as a Scot there was always a grievance over the inclusion of England soccer manager, Sir Alf Ramsey.
In his introduction, historian Asa Briggs wrote:
The last hundred years have seen greater changes in Britain than any previous century - changes in work and in recreation, in education and in politics, in thinking and in feeling. So long as Queen Victoria reigned - until 1901 - there was a strong sense of continuity. During this period Britain produced not only new men of wealth and power but writers of exceptional creative ability. Eminent Victorians were people of character and will as well as of ability.
During the twentieth century there have been far sharper breaks in people’s experience two world wars. There has also been a growth in the size and scale of organisations concerned with government, business and society. Nonetheless, the twentieth century has produced many outstanding people who have made unique contributions to the development of our country and the life of our people.
Selecting a team is never easy. yet the men and women in this album are sure of their place in our history.

The Ark Royal is the 5th Royal Navy vessel to have the name of the original 1587 flagship that defeated the Spanish Armada. Though this Ark Royal was originally to be called the Indomitable, but as its 4th and more famous predecessor had just been decommissioned, public protest ensured the new aircraft carrier was re-named the Ark Royal.
Suggested plans for the vessel’s future use include: a nightclub, a school, an hotel, a prison and a heli-pad. I’m sure we can come up with something far more useful.
Made by UCLA students in 1975, Sonic Boom is a short comedy starring George Kennedy, Ricky Nelson, Keith Moon, Jonathan Winters and Sal Mineo. Directed by Jeff Mandel, the associate producer was Eric Louzil, who went onto make a successful career as a writer, producer and director of low budget horror films. In an interview with Chris Radcliffe, Louzil explained how he had two ideas for his student film:
One was about killer bees coming to California either to be called Deadly Buzz or Deadly Hum to star David L. Lander and Michael Mckean a.k.a. Lenny and Squiggy before they had been cast in the hit television show Laverne & Shirley (1976-1983) and the other was Sonic Boom, a comedy short about a supersonic jet that lands in a small town and creates hysteria over an impending sonic boom that never happens. The former project got scrapped because Landers And Mckean wanted too much creative control over it.
“The way they cast Sonic Boom was simply this: they would get together at production meetings, take out the entertainment section of the Los Angeles Times and find out who had made it into press. Then they would essentially stalk these performers and ask them to help out with their student film.
Mandel and Louzil wanted either Keith Moon or Elton John to appear in the film, as Radcliffe explains:
Elton John was in town playing at the Troubadour so it was a toss up between Keith or Elton. They chose Keith because he was a bigger name at the time. They began hanging out at the clubs he was know to frequent until they caught up with him and he agreed to appear in the film for $1,400 In cocaine and a television, though the one page agreement signed between the producers and Keith read for “One Case Of Coke And A Television” - to which one can only assume that the latter he used to throw out of some window.
“There was something of a scene when the Director and some other guy went down to Palm Springs to get the cocaine and were afraid they would get busted on the return trip. In any event Keith’s scene was filmed at the Burbank Court House where he played the part of a professor wearing a cotex on his upper lip for a mustache. He arrived on the set in a gold limousine (which at that time was extremely rare and impressive) and left in a different one. The short film was eventually released theatrically in 1975 where it was shown before the feature film of the evening Man Friday (1975) starring Peter O’ Toole and Richard Roundtree. Man Friday was a retelling of the Robinson Crusoe story with a strong social message.”

The legendary actress Joan Crawford died today in 1977. While now best remembered through Faye Dunaway’s incredible interpretation of the actress (‘No wire hangers!’) in Mommie Dearest, we tend to forget that Crawford was a talented, Oscar winning actress, who had one of the longest and most successful careers in Hollywood. No mean feat, no matter what her adopted daughter later wrote.
Joan worked damned hard to maintain her career and independence and if she’d been a man, we’d remember her as fondly as Errol Flynn or Robert Mitchum. What is also impressive about Crawford was her ability to make the most of the roles offered, no matter how trashy the role. Her performance in Trog should have won her a medal for perseverance beyond the call of duty.
In 1964, Joan Crawford starred in B-movie genius William Castle’s classic Strait-Jacket, where she gave a brilliantly bizarre performance. Here is Ms Crawford trying out her make-up for the role of suspected ax-murderer Lucy Harbin.

This is a Martin-Baker aircraft ejector seat mounted on a trolley with an attached control column.
I believe both the ejector seat and control column are from a Canberra bomber.As well as being an unusual and interesting piece of furniture, the seat could be used as part of a
flight simulator or gaming set-up. It is certainly a talking point!The seat is fitted with a complete harness and has a suede seat pad which contained a survival pack.
Overall, the seat, trolley and control column are a little scruffy and would benefit from a good clean up
and polish. The ejection rocket and parachute have been removed.The trolley is fitted with small castors so the whole assembly can be moved around. The seat and
control column are easily removable for transportation and would fit into the back of a hatchback with
the seats down.Cash on collection and I would be prepared to deliver up to a 50 - 60 mile radius of Bromley, Kent
for fuel cost.
