Former Dangerous Minds contributor Brad Laner, who has made music variously as Medicine, The Electric Company and under his own name, is returning as part of The Internal Tulips, his Talk Talk-esque side project with Alex Graham (Lexaunculpt).

The electro-acoustic duo’s latest album, Mellotorn Offline, can be sampled here and purchased for $5 at their Bandcamp page.

Mix #1: Brad Laner of Medicine by Captured Tracks FB

Rock is dead but you can still buy my record

Today is the U.S. release date of my split 12” with the Finnish band Joensuu 1685 which was released for European record store day last month and has already sold out there. My lovely American label Hometapes snatched up a limited number of copies and you can buy one here. This record contains my cover of the Chicago classic Feelin’ Stronger Every Day which is a tune I’ve been obsessed with since I was a kid and it was ubiquitous on AM radio. Nobody seems to believe me that it’s kind of a dark, passive-aggressive song and not the up, feel good number the title would imply. Regardless, I think I got it out of system with my quasi indie-rock version of this dad-rock classic. Have a listen:

Hey there Los Angeles DM readers ! My good friends in the band Bell Gardens have conspired to get me to leave my comfy valley hovel next Monday night and come play some records with them at their ongoing residency at a joint called Footsies. Come have a drinky and listen to some cool old school noise rock dudes, Kennneth James Gibson (Furry Things and tons of techno projects), Brian McBride (Stars of the Lid) and I, your humble blogger play a bunch of wonderful records. Below are a few of my solo Dangerous Minds Radio Hour episodes to give you an idea of my kinda randomness.

The Caribbean - Discontinued Perfume

The Caribbean are not only the owners of one of the most arbitrary and google-proof band names in existence but are also one of the flagship bands on the fabulous label which I call, er, home: Hometapes out of lovely Portland, Oregon. Their new CD, Discontinued Perfume, a stunning batch of thoroughly adept experimental pop songs with startlingly conversational lyrics (best song title ever: Thank You for Talking To Me About Israel), is released on February 22nd and available for pre-order today. But wait, there’s more ! Here is a song entitled Outskirts from said album featuring your not-so-humble bloggist pitching in harmony vocals, tinkly piano and a possibly wildly inappropriate guitar solo. Like a nosy neighbor stepping into a conversation he doesn’t quite understand, in The Caribbean’s world where disparate elements make for striking art it actually works. Have a listen.

What is the through-line in this batch of tunes I’ve selected to present to you, the discerning Dangerous Minds consumer? Perhaps it’s what Brian Eno refers to as idiot glee. At least that’s the emotional state that these songs tend to evoke in yours truly. That is until the last few tracks when my stock-in-trade taste for melancholic melody and downer sentiment kicks in. Whatever, hope you enjoy being inside my head for an hour. It’s a weird place to be.

Don Van Vliet - What Are We Gonna Do With You ?
Wild Kingdom - Roma-Destiny
Shoukichi Kina - Haisai Ojisan
Rick Grossman - Mellow Heaven Clout
Bobby Brown - Hawaii Nei I’ll Miss You
Lila Downs - Pinotepa
Albert Ayler & Don Cherry - Ghosts
Aksak Maboul - A Modern Lesson
Can - Turtles Have Short Legs (original 7” version)
Vogel - Flaschenzug
Eno (with The Winkies) - Totalled (I’ll Come Running)
The Van Dyke Parks - Do Want You Wanta
T2 - J.L.T.
Toru Takemitsu - Sky, Horse and Death
Nick Lowe - Endless Sleep

Serious video bonus: The internet debut of the only video footage of the band Wild Kingdom that I know of from my personal collection of New Wave Theatre episodes. I’m truly hoping a member or two of this band will turn up and tell me where the other recordings are (or at least what the incredible drummer ended up doing!)
