Jason Mecier‘s portrait of Honey Boo Boo made of “two cans of hair spray, three tiaras, make-up, mascara, fake eyelashes, coupons, sketti, butter, ten cheese balls, two Red Bulls, one Mountain Dew, a McDonald’s chicken nugget, a pink Snuggy box, an empty toilet paper roll, one cabbage patch doll and a jar of Pigs Feet.”

Apparently it took Mecier over 50 hours to make it.

‘Twin Peaks’ in Red Vines® by Jason Mecier

Endlessly creative artist collage/mosaic artist Jason Mecier’s new exhibit “Licorice Flix, Edible Movie Mosaics” also features portraits of Harry Potter, Willy Wonka, ET, Elizabeth Berkley in Show Girls and Freddy Krueger rendered in Red Vines®. As usual, they’re pretty amazing.

Appropriately, there is a portrait of Charlie Chaplin included. It’s a little-known fact that the shoe the Little Tramp boils and eats in The Gold Rush was made of licorice by the American Licorice Company, the same company who make Red Vines® (and who are sponsoring the art show).

The show is opening at the IAm8Bit Gallery at 2147 W. Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles, with a reception for the artist on November 4 from 7-10 PM.

Pop star portraits made out of junk, food and other stuff

Jason Mecier is truly a mixed media artist composing portraits using everything from food and yarn to pills and assorted junk. Here are a few of his pieces that turned my head.

Mary Hartman made from beans. Andy Warhol: bananas, film, soup cans. Tura Satana; rice. Michaels Jackson: pills. Patti Smith: yarn. Barbi Benton: rolls of film, cosmetics…

You really must visit Jason’s website to see all of his work in close-up. In many of the portraits, the materials used tell the tale - form truly being an extension of content.

New “eye candy” from Dangerous Minds fave Jason Mecier showing in San Francisco, with work from his partner, Adam J. Ansell, in an exhibit called We Like to Watch TV, opening August 1 and running through September 30.

I just love this portrait of “Dexter” done in licorice!

Celebrity mosaic portrait artist Jason Mecier and longtime partner, painter Adam J. Ansell, have teamed up to create a new body of work inspired by their favorite pastime… watching TV! Expect to see many faces from TV, movies, reality shows, sitcoms, documentaries, music videos and even commercials.

Adam’s edgy, high fashion, expressionistic paintings, ironically capture eccentric television personalities from The Real Housewives, Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, True Blood, and The Wendy Williams Show, to Millionaire Matchmaker, Larry King and many others.

Jason’s new works are striking and delicious, made entirely out of licorice! Thousands of fat free red and black licorice vines have been carefully glued into the likenesses of Mo’Nique, Judge Judy, Dexter, Freddy Krueger, Nomi Malone, Taylor Lautner, and others.

GLAMA - RAMA, 304 Valencia Street, San Francisco 415.861.4526
Opening Reception Sunday August 1, 6-9pm
