The New York Dolls playing at the Waldorf-Astoria’s Grand Ballroom for Howard Stein’s Halloween bash on October 31, 1973.

Oh my God, the Waldorf-Astoria regret that gig! Hundreds of FREAKS strolling around the entire lobby area, blowing minds. The Dolls made us wait like an extra 90 minutes and then were hilariously drunk. They were totally awful, but, looked great. It made sense somehow.” Binky Philips.

Now this would have made for a memorable mid-70s Halloween! Crank it up!

NY Dolls on Don Kirshner’s ‘Rock Concert’ in full

image

The New York Dolls deranging the airwaves in 1975.

1. (There’s Gonna Be a) Showdown
2. Stranded in the Jungle
3. Trash
4. Chatterbox
5. Don’t You Start Me Talking
6. Personality Crisis

The shock heard around the block…the rest of the world didn’t get it. But don’t blame me. I bought tickets for their show at a strip joint in Boulder, Colorado but the Dolls canceled. Not enough advance ticket sales. The hippies and mountain climbers were too busy smoking dope and waiting for Poco to pull into town.

70 minutes of punk rock history: Bob Gruen’s ‘New York Dolls - Lookin’ Fine On Television’

Here’s some fabulous 1970s footage of the New York Dolls performing, talking and hanging out. Directed by one of rock and roll’s great photographers and chroniclers of the New York music scene Bob Gruen with his partner Nadya Beck.

70 minutes of indispensable, demented, glorious punk rock history.

The young, the bad, the beautiful.

Update 12/30 5:30 central time. MVD Entertainment Group went from offering this for free to suddenly charging a $2.99 rental free. This happened within the past few hours. They must have seen the traffic Dangerous Minds was sending them and decided to profit it from it. Which is fine. But it wasn’t my intent to send people to a site where it was going to cost you money to see this video. It’s certainly worth $2.99 to rent, but still…

New New York Dolls not the old New York Dolls

With Johnny Thunders, Jerry Nolan and Arthur Kane gone, the reconstituted New York Dolls’ albums sound like David Johansen’s solo albums. Not a bad thing, but man do I miss the street vibe the dead Dolls brought to the mix.

The debut single, “Fool For You Baby,” from David and Syl Sylvain’s new album Dancing Backward in High Heels, could be a mid-70s Rolling Stones’ tune with guitars on mute. The Dolls may be dancing backwards but they’re definitely not wearing high heels anymore.

The absence of Johnny Thunders is a huge missing ingredient in The Dolls’ new material. Proof you can’t put your arms around a memory. And maybe David and Syl aren’t even trying to resurrect the past. But calling themselves The New York Dolls certainly begs comparisons.

DM contributor Paul Gallagher wrote about All Dolled Up last month and provided a link to the film on Youtube that was unfortunately not viewable in the USA. Well, much to our delight, our pals at See Of Sound have made the film available for the Internet audience on this side of the pond and everywhere else.

Paul had this to say about All Dolled Up:

Here’s something lush. The New York Dolls hit the road in this documentary film made by rock photographer Bob Gruen and his wife Nadya Beck. Filmed over three years, All Dolled Up captures The Dolls at their height in the early seventies, following them backstage and on tour, visiting such legendary venues as the Whiskey-A-Go-Go, the E-Club, Kenny’s Castaways and Max’s Kansas City. And there are also rousing versions of “Personality Crisis”, “Who Are the Mystery Girls”, “Vietnamese Baby”, amongst others. So, kick back your high heels and enjoy.”

New York Dolls release new album with exclusive gigs in London

image

The New York Dolls are playing two nights in an “exclusive London venue” on the 30 and 31 March 2011, to promote their new album Dancing Backwards in High Heels.

MOF Artist and Events ltd have teamed up with the Old Vic to produce a series of events “in a raw and outstanding space below London’s Waterloo station.” The events will take place in the Old Vic Tunnels, a series of red brick tunnels running underneath the main railway station. From here, MOF and the Old Vic will be showcasing a range of “profile artists, with one off shows, album releases, secret gigs & afterparties.”

To launch our unique event series, we are excited to present, original punk/glam instigators The New York Dolls promoting the UK release of their new album: Dancing Backwards in High Heels (produced by Jason Hill of the Killers, released Monday, March 14th)

These intimate shows are the only London dates of their short UK tour. (their last small venue show in London’s 100 Club sold out in 4 minutes)

Legendary guitarist Earl Slick, best known for his spectacular guitar work on David Bowie’s albums David Live (1974), Young Americans (1975) and Station To Station (1976), has officially joined the New York Dolls as the bands new guitarist on their exclusive London shows.

The New York Dolls’ fifth studio album, Dancing Backward In High Heels has received some very positive reviews:

New York Dolls are back on fantastic creative form with their wonderful new album, Dancing Backward In High Heels, which was recorded and mixed in sunny Newcastle – miles from their home in New York City…

The Dolls have proved that they can still produce an enjoyable, rocking album that does not show off their age at all. In comparison, they make their younger counterparts sound dull and dreary. With an upcoming UK tour, there is no stopping the original New York punk band.

Here are four tracks from the new album, and one golden oldie. For more information on The Dolls’ London gigs, check here.

New York Dolls - “Streetcake” (2011)

New York Dolls - “Round and Round She Goes” (2011)

New York Dolls - “I Sold My Heart to the Junkman” (2011)

New York Dolls - “Baby Tell Me What I’m On” (2011)

New York Dolls - “Jet Boy” (1973)
