The story behind the infamous ‘Just You’ song from ‘Twin Peaks’

David Lynch has always had an ear for an arresting tune—indeed, they feature in just about all of his most appreciated works—think of “In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)” in Eraserhead, “Blue Velvet” and “In Dreams” in Blue Velvet, the Spanish version of Roy Orbison’s “Crying” in Mulholland Drive, and so on.

Angelo Badalamenti has been Lynch’s music collaborator ever since Blue Velvet. His brilliant, moody theme music for Twin Peaks catapulted him into public recognition, although it was actually Lynch himself who composed one of the most controversial musical pieces in the director’s oeuvre, ironically the one bit of music that may have made some fans curse Badalamenti—I refer to the creepy, doomy music heard in the lengthy “Pink Room” scene in Fire Walk With Me (which was unfortunately rendered well-nigh incomprehensible because the music drowned out the dialogue).

Those who stuck with the TV series through its second season were rewarded with one of the show’s most indelible and controversial moments in the second episode (titled “Coma”) when James Hurley (James Marshall) and two young women he’s involved with, Donna Hayward (Lara Flynn Boyle) and Maddy Ferguson (Sheryl Lee, who also played the iconic Laura Palmer), convene in the Haywards’ living room to “work on” a new song. The song is purest 1957, right down to the downright peculiar falsetto work by James, and sparks fly when during the song, Donna notices the intensity of the interactions between Maddy and James and leaves the room. (Have you learned nothing, Donna? Never yield the field of battle to your opponent!)

This scene has probably resulted in more derision than any other scene in Twin Peaks—although a lot of Twin Peaks fans really dig it. It’s so artificial and over-the-top that it’s impossible to take at face value. But give Lynch credit—only he could come up with a scene as magnificently static and “off” and yet so wonderfully resonant. The sickly saccharine quality of the song matched to the all-too-real drama the characters are experiencing…. it’s so Lynchian it hurts.

How did the scene come about? Remarkably, it was the product of a hasty songwriting session on the set that took place quite shortly before shooting the scene. As James Marshall explained at the Twin Peaks Festival in 2013, “I play guitar a lot and I used to bring my guitar to the set. ... David Lynch heard about it and said, ‘Would you be comfortable doing a song on the show?’”

So Marshall and Badalamenti and Lynch met on the set of the Hayward home, where the scene would eventually be shot, to compose a Fifties pastiche on the fly, presumably while a million other things are going on around them. Here’s a loose transcription of Marshall’s account (some verbal filler removed, tightened in places):

The day rolls around and I go up to the set like he asked me to, Angelo’s standing there—it was the Hayward house because there was an upright piano in it, so we got to use the piano to write. So he goes, “What is the vibe that you want to do?” And I said, “Well, the vibe of the whole series is timeless? But it—we don’t want to go Fifties, but almost a little Fifties sort of feel? When I think of Fifties, we could do a doowop kind of feel, but make it falsetto doowop but almost Beatles falsetto doowop, we’re not going to “sha na na” or whatever, make it something etheric [prob. “ethereal”]. They go, “What song?” and Angelo starts messing around on the keyboards. I go, “No, not fast, let’s go slow.” All three of us have this banter back and forth of how the song should go. Angelo said name a song because David was stuck. ... So I go, “When I think of Fifties I think of ‘Only You.’” ... that real romantic, over-the-top, shredding keyboards almost to distortion. Bowie’s good at that, old Bowie stuff. Right? So I go, “It can’t be that, but that vibe.” And Angelo goes, “Got it!”

You should click on the video below and hear Marshall’s account for yourself, it’s very engaging (and starts around the 4:45 mark).

One of the more unexpected aspects of Twin Peaks: The Return was the prominence of the Renault family’s Roadhouse. In the final section of most of the new episodes (of which there were 18), the action would move to the tavern venue where (in completely random fashion, honestly) a remarkable array of prominent musical performers would appear and do a song, including such stalwarts as Rebekah Del Rio, Au Revoir Simone, Sharon Van Etten, and (most surprising of all) Nine Inch Nails.

Twin Peaks (Music From the Limited Event Series)

Just as the viewers had gotten used to all manner of musical stars improbably trekking all the way to southern Washington state for a special intimate gig, episode 13 surprised the Twin Peaks faithful by getting James Hurley/Marshall and two backup singers on the stage for a special rendition of Twin Peaks’ most cloyingly controversial song: “Just You.” You can hear it below.

One of the more glittering vinyl offerings this year is the 2LP soundtrack for Twin Peaks: The Return, which contains all of the songs played at the Roadhouse during the 2017 episodes, also known as “Season 3.”

Former Republican Presidential candidate Herman Cain’s strange obsession with ‘Twin Peaks’

A tweet from former presidential candidate Herman Cain’s official Twitter page from Monday, July 17th, 2017.

A friend of mine hipped me to the weird tweets coming from idiotic 2012 presidential candidate and Fox News “personality” Herman Cain. It appears that over the last five or so days Cain has been tweeting images from David Lynch’s television series Twin Peaks along with short rants.

If you’ve successfully blocked memories of Mr. Cain out of your mind, let me help you with that. This is the same guy that once referred to strategic U.S. ally Uzbekistan as “Ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan” so it’s probably not all that surprising that his Twitter account would be a bit unhinged. However, this new stuff seems a bit nutty even for Cain. I mean, he even went so far as to post a photo of Morning Joe‘s Joe Scarborough next to a picture of John Nance in character from Eraserhead. What are you doing Herman Cain? I don’t know if I should get behind this or get to the bottom of it. Perhaps some of our more investigative-minded DM readers will be able to figure out the meaning of these strange dispatches. For now, I’ll leave you to check out screenshots of Cain’s Twin Peaks related tweets below and after the jump…

Acid Mothers Temple’s cover of eerie ‘Twin Peaks’ song to be released next week

The whole world is waiting impatiently for the return of Twin Peaks later this month on Showtime. The original run of Twin Peaks on ABC in 1990 and 1991 is one of the pivotal junctures of television history, as the surrealist master David Lynch and his co-consipirator Mark Frost brought new levels of atmosphere and lust to the normally PG-rated confines of network TV, baffling and exasperating audiences with an occult-laced, nightmarish gee-whiz take on the Pacific Northwest that crossed Lynch’s prior hit Blue Velvet with an FBI murder mystery.

After nearly three decades, Lynch is reviving the show, and a certain group of Japanese freaks has taken notice. On May 12, in plenty of time for the premiere of the reboot on May 21, Self Sabotage Records is releasing a split 12-inch with Acid Mothers Temple and The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. from Japan and ST 37 from Texas, U.S.A. both contributing covers of Angelo Badalamenti/Lynch songs from the original run of Twin Peaks. Acid Mothers Temple is covering “Sycamore Trees,” a song sung by Jimmy Scott (as the singer at the Black Lodge) in the final episode of Season 2, and ST 37 is contributing a cover of “Just You,” which appears in the second episode of Season 2.

The “Just You” scene is one of the more interesting in the first half of season 2. The song itself has a completely otherworldly vocal quality, somewhat like “In Heaven” from Lynch’s masterpiece Eraserhead. In the scene James (played by James Marshall) sings the song in the Haywards’ living room, during which Donna (Lara Flynn Boyle) realizes that she is in danger of losing James to Laura Palmer’s cousin Maddie (played, like Laura Palmer herself, by Sheryl Lee). I like the song (and the scene), but a LOT of people find the whole thing cringeworthy. It’s definitely up there in the Lynch pantheon of weird/awesome scenes.

ST 37 is psych/space rock band that was formed in 1987 in Austin, Texas. They’ve put out more than a dozen albums since 1989, the most recent of which is 2014’s I’m Not Good. Describing Acid Mothers Temple is a challenge: It’s the main band of a number of psych rock offshoots founded by guitar legend Kawabata Makoto, who sought to create “extreme trip music” influenced by prog rock and krautrock. Befitting a band that is making trippy jam albums somewhat à la Sun Ra, their (often 2-LP) albums have wordy, spacy titles like The Penultimate Galactic Bordello Also the World You Made or Crystal Rainbow Pyramid Under the Stars.

I like this. A lot. David Lynch has teamed up with Habitat Skateboards and created these wonderful skateboard decks as an ode to the Twin Peaks series. The skate decks feature the Log Lady, Dale Cooper, Laura Palmer, and Audrey Horne.

The decks sell for $54.99 here.

As you are all probably aware of at this point, the premiere of Twin Peaks on Showtime is set for May 21. I can’t wait!

Amazing (or goofy?) ‘Twin Peaks’-themed fashion spread from the pages of Sassy magazine, 1990
09.30.2016

The debut of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s groundbreaking ABC series Twin Peaks occurred on the night of April 8, 1990. And for a solid year media-savvy people were capable of talking about little else. As a proof, witness this remarkable and unintentionally hilarious fashion spread that appeared in the October 1990 issue of Sassy.

Lynch and Frost were able to deliver their surrealist mindfuckery to an audience of millions by peppering their Pacific Northwest landscape with young hotties of both genders (Mädchen Amick, Sheryl Lee, Dana Ashbrook, Lara Flynn Boyle, James Marshall, Sherilyn Fenn) and a good old-fashioned dose of whodunnit. You can swallow a lot of WTF? when attractive people are caught up in a murder plot.

The Sassy spread was titled “Anytown, U.S.A.” and perhaps it demonstrates that the distinctively alluring tone of the series wasn’t all that easy to reproduce. Here’s your tryin’-too-hard intro text:

ON the surface, the quaint rural BLISS of dirt roads, diners AND sawmills. But underneath the age-old Douglas firs lurk mysteries EVEN the sheriff doesn’t know about. COULD be your town. Could be YOU. So dress the part in clothes that are INNOCENT and sexy, naive and SOPHISTICATED — a look that’s MEANT to intrigue.

THEN WAIT for the FBI.

Obviously the log lady pic gets the biggest LULZ here. As widely reported, the series returns on Showtime in 2017 with a cast of dozens.

More of these great pics as well as a fashion spread with the real Twin Peaks actors…...

Damn fine teeny-tiny ‘Twin Peaks’ dioramas

A diorama based on Agent Dale Cooper’s dream about the ‘Red-Room’ from David Lynch’s 1990 television series ‘Twin Peaks.’

An artist based in Babenhausen, Germany named “Kristina” is currently selling her super-small DIY Twin Peaks diorama sets that come in three different versions based on scenes from the original television series that made its debut over 25 years ago.

A tiny David Lynch is included with this version of ‘Red-Room’ diorama.

Available in her Etsy store Boxartig you can pick up what Kristina refers to as “Dodos” of Agent Dale Cooper’s dream about the Red-Room, a scene from Lydecker Veterinary Clinic that features Agent Cooper and a Llama getting acquainted; and a grim miniature recreation of the body of Laura Palmer resting on the beach wrapped in plastic. While they are pricey ($58-$94 bucks a pop) they are really well done and it’s my hope that the talented German artist will continue to create others as I’m quite sure the one’s currently available at Boxartig will quickly disappear (the Lydecker’s Vet diorama already has).

Images of Kristina’s tiny homages to Twin Peaks follow.

Stranger Peaks: Someone mashed-up ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘Twin Peaks’ themes AND IT WORKS!

I’m going assume by now you’re all completely done with the Stranger Things hoopla. I know I am. Yet here I am blogging about the damned Netflix TV show again. I sorta kinda really wanna kick myself over it right now. I do.  But this mash-up is just too good not to share with you fine folks. Seattle-based Prom Queen on SoundCloud mashed together the theme from Stranger Things with Twin Peaks “Laura Palmer’s Theme.” It’s synth nostalgia heaven, if you ask me. Who knows, you might actually like it and not hate me for bringing up Stranger Things again.

Last time I do this. Promise. Until next time…

Just kidding! (No I’m not.)

‘Twin Peaks’ soundtrack reissue pressed onto ‘damn fine coffee’ color vinyl
08.24.2016

Behold the ‘Damn Fine Coffee’ edition of the newly reissued vinyl soundtrack for the original ‘Twin Peaks’ television series.

A little over a week ago—on August 10th—a vinyl reissue of the soundtrack for the original Twin Peaks television series (first broadcast in 1990) scored by long-time David Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti was released into the wild via Mondotees and promptly sold out. If you missed the boat on that like I did there’s still a way (and a better one at that) to score the gorgeous release which comes pressed into coffee-colored vinyl whose color profile is described as “Damn Fine Coffee.”

Starting on September 9th many cool independant brick and mortar record and video shops across the country will temporarily transform into a version of Agent Dale Cooper’s favorite hangout, Tweed’s Cafe in North Bend, Washington and will offer up their own in-store “Coffee and Pie” event during which you can purchase the record while listening to the soundtrack. Two-long years in the making, the packaging for the soundtrack is almost as cool as the show which comes in a gatefold sleeve, with liner notes written by Badalamenti and a record jacket that pays tribute to the floors of the “Black Lodge” thanks to the clever use of a die cut pattern on the cover. If it sounds at all to you like I am completely geeking out on this, then you’d be correct. Especially since my favorite video store, the world-famous Scarecrow Video in Seattle, is holding one of the 20-some-odd “Coffee and Pie” events. Yummy.

For those of you bemoaning the fact that you don’t live in the U.S. according to the website Welcome to Twin Peaks there are a few locations in the UK, too that will also be hosting their own Twin Peaks party. More details on the record as well as a full list of shops (which does appear to be updated from time to time) that will be hosting the event, here. If your location isn’t listed or if you prefer to miss out on what sounds like a really excellent time you can pre-order the album (for a mark-up in most cases) at lots of places online.

The owls are not what they seem: Intimate photos taken on the set of the original ‘Twin Peaks’

Agent Dale Cooper (played by Kyle MacLachlan) having fun smashing glass with his head on the set of ‘Twin Peaks.’

I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.
Agent Dale Cooper

Many of the photos in this post captured while the cameras weren’t rolling on the set of Twin Peaks were taken by actor Richard Beymer (who played ‘Benjamin Horne’ in the series) after the photographer hired to take promotional shots for the film quit (you can still buy a few of Beymer’s beautiful photos here). Others are what appear to be candid photos including an amusing polaroid of director David Lynch yelling into the ear of actress Grace Zabriskie (who played Laura Palmer’s mother Sarah in the original series) with a megaphone.

Deputy ‘Tommy Hawk Hill’ (played by actor Michael Horse) hanging out with a deer head.

As pretty much everyone on the face of the earth has been following along with the drama that has surrounded the return of Twin Peaks to TV (predicted to occur sometime in 2017) after Lynch said sayonara to the folks at Showtime via a series of Tweets to his “Twitter Friends” noting that he had himself began to notify the cast that he was no longer attached to the shows revival. Thankfully for lovers of the Log Lady about a month later the one-of-a-kind master of cult films decided to come back as did pretty much every one of the members of the original cast. And if that’s not enough for you to get excited about the fact that television is about to get really fucking weird again the show will start shooting scenes in location around Washington State specifically North Bend—the home of Twede’s Cafe that still serves up “Twin Peaks” signature cherry pie and of course “a damn fine cup o’ coffee.”

Loads of cool behind-the-scenes shots from 1990 series follow.

Wonderful ‘Twin Peaks’ mid-century style matchbook covers
08.02.2016
09:10 am

Brisbane-based illustrator/designer Steven Rhodes can handle an impressive diversity of styles, but as I perused his portfolio, the quirk in his oeuvre that struck my fancy the most was his truly impressive gift for recreating the distinctive look of cheap mid-century print graphics. He used that talent to wonderful effect in a new set of prints, available from Society 6, in which he imagines matchbook covers for locations in David Lynch’s cult TV series Twin Peaks. I wish he’d actually have matchbooks made—I’d definitely get a set! That said, while the diner, gas station, casino et al all seem like businesses that might have custom matchbooks, I question whether the sheriff’s department and the mill would have them. But it’s hard to quibble too much when it’s all in fun, and the sawmill cover is actually pretty great.

Welcome to Twin Peaks debuted them earlier this summer, and Rhodes explained what attracted him to the project:

“Twin Peaks has always evoked a sense of nostalgia. There’s an innocent 1950’s aesthetic to the town that contrasts so well with the darkness beneath. It was important that the artwork felt as authentic as possible to the mid-century era.”

Darkly Lynchian mixtape featuring songs by the cast of the new ‘Twin Peaks’
06.30.2016
01:19 pm

David Lynch completed shooting the new Twin Peaks episodes he and Mark Frost are producing for a Showtime release early next year. The singular TV show had its brilliant but inconclusive-feeling initial run in 1990 and 1991 on ABC, and it was enough of a sensation to land Lynch on the cover of TIME, identified as “The Wild-at-Art Genius” behind the show. It’s beyond question that Lynch and Co. helped stretch the boundaries of what a TV narrative could be, at a time when network television was practically the only game in town.

Around the same time that the shooting on the new episodes wrapped, the excellent blog Welcome to Twin Peaks noticed that the whopping 217-person cast list released by the show contained a goodly number of people with a decent musical pedigree—or better. For instance, Trent Reznor, Eddie Vedder, Sky Ferreira, and Sharon Van Etten are all listed as cast members, while actors such as Jennifer Jason Leigh, Monica Bellucci, Richard Chamberlain, and Balthazar Getty have released music in their time.

From these facts was birthed a tremendously fertile idea—why not cobble together a mixtape that is limited to the people on the cast list that evokes the peculiarly malevolent and down-home acoustical vibe that Angelo Badalamenti created for the original show? And that’s exactly what Welcome to Twin Peaks did.

We all know what Twin Peaks music sounds like. Starting with the spare guitar notes with the saccharine synth tones from the show’s opening theme, the show’s music evoked a just the right Bizarro World of melodrama that just might produce a random lady clutching a log or a cryptic dream dwarf.

Obviously, Nine Inch Nails and Pearl Jam is fair game for the project, and the mix brilliantly stretches as far back as 1962 for Richard Chamberlain’s tremendous cover of the Everly Brothers’ “All I Have to Do Is Dream.” How they missed the masterpiece that is Jim Belushi & The Sacred Hearts’ 1998 album 36-22-36 is a mystery for the ages.

This ‘Twin Peaks’/‘Clue’ mashup board game needs to be mass produced like NOW

Very much like “Monopoly,” the enduringly popular board game “Clue” (known as “Cluedo” in the civilized world) has goosed its sales by offering niche-y special editions, mostly for franchises with heavy geek appeal—Firefly, Harry Potter, D&D, Game of Thrones, even that god damn Big Bang Theory crap. But somehow the gaming world has been mighty lean on Twin Peaks tie-ins. I searched in vain for board games, card games, video games, anything. I find this baffling—a murder mystery with a massive ensemble of odd characters would seem a natural for a board game, but evidently the only one that ever existed was regarded very poorly and is now a bit difficult to come by, even in internetland.

So I would Kickstart the absolute living hell out of this: way back in 2007, a Craftster forum user by the handle of “riverwatson” posted a detourned Twin Peaks version of “Clue,” renaming the conservatory, kitchen, study et al things like “The Red Room,” “One Eyed Jack’s,” “The Palmer Residence,” and subbing the show’s characters in for Professor Plum, Miss Scarlet and Colonel Mustard. (I hope it goes without saying that Laura Palmer is Mr. Boddy?)

The ‘Twin Peaks’ hangover cure, because we know some of you need it
01.01.2016

Overdoing it on New Years Eve is an old, old story, and I’m sure almost all of us over drinking age and plenty of us below it know it well. Taking care of hangover business on the morning after is a rich vein of lore going back centuries; willow bark, milk thistle and all other kinds of exotic flora turn up in that historic lode of iffy advice. My own preferred remedy is more modern: a Pedialyte Advanced Care/Alka Seltzer Plus cocktail, which may sound gross but my hand to the GODS that shit’s a hangover nuke. But the tried and true hot shower/hot coffee/greasy diner breakfast/lots of water is still a champion move, if a bit mundane. And if you’re just an irredeemable imbiber, the hair of the dog that bit you rarely fails, though it’s ultimately just a delay tactic, really.

DM has blogged about a fair few hangover remedies in our distant and more recent past, but we’ve not yet shared a true classic—Agent Dale Cooper’s advice to the ailing Sheriff Harry Truman. You can be forgiven if you missed it, it’s from the 18th episode (out of 22) of the ill-fated second season of Twin Peaks, at which point even a lot of die-hards had tuned out on the show. (The also the episode with the ultra-quotable Agent Cole line “THAT’S THE KINDA GIRL THAT MAKES YOU WISH YOU SPOKE A LITTLE FRENCH!”)

Here’s the clip. We hope it helps, and whether you over-celebrated or didn’t partake at all, we hope you have a great 2016.
