Even the Westboro Baptist Church wants the new iPhone, despite picketing Steve Jobs funeral

I tend to avoid writing anything about the Westboro Baptist Church, simply because they’re just not that funny anymore. The futile comedy of right-wing fringe always eventually wears thin, as hateful (yet largely impotent) antics eventually become repetitive and predictable. Sarah Palin said something vicious, yet totally ignorant? Of course she did. Glenn Beck deluded himself into another xenophobic conspiracy theory? Wow. Really?

Since the ole’ WBC has protested the funerals of everyone from dead marines to Matthew Shepard to Ronnie James Dio, it’s hard to imagine a context where they won’t rally, brandishing their trademark “God Hates Fags” signage in a grotesque, redundant performance. It’s ugly, but it’s a cliché, and an increasingly dull one.

However, recently the Westboro Baptist Church took a visit to New York City, and I’ll-be-damned-to-gay-hell if the kooks didn’t surprise me! The lovely folks at Animal New York reached out to them as they picketed…I dunno, cronuts or something, only to learn that the parishioners are avid Apple fans! (Perhaps they sensed the disinterest of famously unflappable New Yorkers—we often see weirder shit than the WBC in the freaking Financial District.) Cult leader Steve Drain, emailed Animal this ringing endorsement:

The iPhone 6 will allow us to preach to this sinful nation more effectively than the 5s! Bigger screen to see our signs more clearly—like ‘Repent or Perish’ or ‘Fag Marriage Dooms Nations’! More people will mock our using of the phone, citing (incorrectly) a hypocrisy in using a device designed and marketed by a man whose funeral we picketed for his idolatry, then atheism, and adultery (Steve Jobs). Which device do you think our ‘Why Did God Destroy Sodom?’ will display best on? iPhone6, Galaxy 5, or HTC? I bet the preaching will be effective, by God’s hand, as viewed in all of them—don’t you think?

Yeah, you read that right, but Grindr looks better on the new iPhone, too. Instead of picketing the Chelsea Apple Store with signs that say “iPhone 666,” or “Fag iPhone Enabler,” the Westboro Baptist Church has decided their use of this chic new tech will spread their unholy message—and they’ve come to this conclusion despite having protested Steve Jobs’ funeral in 2011. Incidentally, they announced their plans to do so over Twitter… on their iPhones. I know very few of us can presently escape the clutches of global capitalism and all, but isn’t there some biblical reference to a bad tree being unable to bear good fruit?

Then again, the Westboro Baptist Church has never been very big on fruits…

‘The Westboro Baptist Church picketed me?! But I’m the Internet’s leading homophobe!’

Bryan Fischer

Bryan Fischer has a funny story to tell about Fred Phelps:

They went to a couple of liberal churches to stage their protests as well. The media covered those protests. The media—nobody showed up at our church, because I already had a reputation as somebody who defended natural marriage and would stand against any effort to compromise or redefine marriage. I had that reputation already in the community. So they weren’t about to come to my church and show Fred Phelps picketing me—because that did not fit their narrative, that I was the leading raging homophobe in the Treasure Valley [Idaho]. So I always found that pretty ironic, that I was picketed by Fred Phelps’ church for being too pro-gay. Now if there was ever proof that God has a sense of humor, that would be it. Fred Phelps and his bunch picketed me for being too pro-gay….

The man has a point. He is a raging homophobe. Last year, Fischer, host of the talk radio program Focal Point on American Family Radio (gag), took credit for instigating the ouster of Mitt Romney’s national security spokesman Richard Grenell because of Grenell’s homosexuality—Fischer called it a “big win.” Also last year, Fischer advocated setting up “an underground railroad to protect innocent children from same-sex households.” In other words, he advocated kidnapping children with same-sex parents because an “activist judge” who happens not to subscribe to Fischer’s twisted brand of family values just might rule that such a household is in the child’s best interest.

According to Wikipedia, “Fischer has voiced support for the AIDS denial movement. ... Fischer strongly supported [Peter] Duesberg’s contention that AIDS is not caused by HIV, but by recreational drug use.” Wikipedia continues:

In January 2013, he compared homosexual sodomy to pedophilic sex, incest and bestiality. In January 2013, Fischer compared the Boy Scouts of America’s change in views on gay scouts and scout masters to Jerry Sandusky, saying allowing gay scout masters was inviting pedophiles into the tents of children. In March 2013, Fischer compared homosexuality to bank robbery when Senator Portman announced his views on same-sex marriage had changed due to having a gay son. In April 2013, Fischer commented on the case of Carla Hale, a lesbian teacher fired from the Catholic school she worked for when her partner was named in her mother’s obituary, saying that it was right for the school to fire her based on her “immoral sexual behavior”. He argued that just as shoplifters are discriminated against, society should discriminate against those who engage in other forms of immorality or aberrant sexual behavior. During an interview on the Alan Colmes show, Fischer refused to answer when asked if he had ever had gay impulses, instead changing the subject to adultery.

At the risk of being vulgar, I might paraphrase Fischer’s complaint thus: Whose dick do I have to suck around here to be considered a proper homophobe???

After I watched the video below, pondering how difficult it really must be for members of the Westboro Baptist Church to date outside of their own… gene pool, for shits and Google, I decided to see if there actually was a WestboroMingle.com

And you know what? There is! It’s place where, “God hates Friday night loneliness.”

God Hates Fred Phelps: Westboro Baptist Church founder, the world’s most hypocritical CLOSET CASE???

image
What do you think Perez Hilton would draw on this photo?

When Lauren Drain, 27, a former member of the Westboro Baptist Church hate group sat down with The Advocate to discuss her new book recently she revealed her belief that “something” had happened—something, let’s face it, that is TOTALLY EASY TO BELIEVE—in his past that inspired “church” founder Fred Phelps’ vicious anti-gay crusade:

I never understood why, when [the media asked him], “Why are you so against the homosexuals? Did you have a homosexual experience? Do you have homosexual tendencies?” And he would get so mad, he would shut down. And he’d be like, “I can’t talk to this person anymore, they’re stupid.” His reaction to that was stronger than any other question you can ask him. So I always wondered that — why does he get so mad? If I’m not gay, I’ll just say I’m not gay. And I’m not going to freak out, like, “Why are you calling me gay?” I always thought that was super strange. … I don’t know what happened there, so [speculation] is all that I can leave it at. But something happened, and something made him change his mind about the military, and in turn have kind of a crusade against sexual immorality and homosexuals.

No gasps from the peanut gallery? Nope, none at all.

Drain’s book, Banished: Surviving My Years in the Westboro Baptist Church, describes her childhood growing up with Westboro nutters after her father became obsessed with the group and moved his family to Kansas to be nearer to the Phelps family.

Westboro Baptist Church trolled—hard—by comedian

image

Comic “Brick Stone” (aka Dave Sirus) winds them up tighter and tighter as this goes on. Brilliant.

“Have you ever wondered how good gay sex must be if people are willing to go to Hell for it?”

And the line that saw my coffee go from my mouth to my keyboard:

“How do you respond to rumors that you’re 26?”

More fun at God Hates Brick Stone.

Anonymous threaten to ‘destroy’ Westboro Baptist Church over Sandy Hook protests

image

The much-hated haters of the Westboro Baptist Church, well-known for their “God Hates Fags” signs and picketing the funerals of dead soldiers, announced over the weekend that they were planning a demonstration at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Callously disregarding the residents of Newtown, Margie Phelps, a member of the Phelps clan tweeted that “fags” and gay marriage had brought the mayhem to the CT town. A freakish musical statement from the WBC purports that God had sent the shooter (personally, I guess).

Residents of Newtown don’t need this shit right now. Enter Anonymous.

In a video uploaded on Vimeo, the hacker collective throws down the gauntlet:

We will not allow you to corrupt the minds of America with your seeds of hatred. We will not allow you to inspire aggression to the social factions which you deem inferior. We will render you obsolete. We will destroy you. We are coming.

An awful lot of people would very much like to see that happen judging from the supportive comments (unsurprisingly, the WBC attracts few “care trolls” who stick up for them, or even for their First Amendment rights. Most people just loath them and want to see them hurt).

So far Anonymous has published the email addresses, phone numbers and street addresses of a number of Westboro members (And what do ya know, most of them are named “Phelps”!). A US government official predicted earlier this year that soon enough Anonymous would have the expertise to be able to bring down parts of the power grid.

Fuck the Phelps, sure, but just imagine if they took down Wall Street for the day.

Update: Either the infamous 15-year-old hacker “Cosmo the God”—or since he’s actually on probation, someone hijacking his handle has hacked the Twitter account of Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of the hate group’s founder, Rev. Fred Phelps.

Update #2: Nathan Phelps, son of Fred Phelps, but who has no part in their insane shenanigans, responded to his family’s announced actions:

“My heart goes out to the grieving families as well as the rest of the surrounding community during this time of unthinkable mourning & tremendous loss. The news that my sister & the rest of my family intend to protest the funerals of those lost in this national tragedy is, to me, a stark reminder that anyone’s interpretation of religious texts serve more as a reflection to the character of those reading it than whatever the author intended in the first place. My sincere hope is that the Sandy Hook community is able to grieve & mourn privately, & with whatever peace can be had in knowing the rest of the world mourns with you.

“To those considering offering WBC an alternative to protesting these funerals, I say, ‘let them show up’. WBC is running out of money & their leader is a frail old man whose power & reach is tremendously limited to those who provide them an audience. Their recent tactic has been accepting media air time in lieu of protesting high profile funerals. By allowing them this luxury, they get free publicity with no effort or expense on their part, while potentially traumatizing a much wider audience than those strong enough to stand against them in silent but effective counter-protest. These counter-protests have, many times, prevented the grieving mourners from being impacted by WBC’s childish, attention seeking behavior. Please do not allow WBC the option of a less costly alternative. By calling their bluff, they will either ask for police protection, which allows police to control where they are located, or not request police protection, which would clearly be an unwise decision considering the emotionally charged environment they will be entering. Either way they alone will bear their costs, along with sole responsibility for harassing the community, without the benefit of a national platform in which to do it.”

Michele Bachmann: Gays are ‘part of Satan,’ Westboro Baptists gays’ ‘best friends’

At the National Education Leadership Conference in 2004, Michele Bachmann, then Minnesota State Senator, gave a lecture on the effects of same-sex marriage on education. It’s as stupid you you might imagine.

There is not a whole lot of nuance in her words describing homosexuality and LGBT people, is there?

“I am not here bashing people who are homosexuals, who are lesbians, who are bisexual, who are transgendered. We need to have profound compassion for the people who are dealing with the very real issue of sexual dysfunction in their life, and sexual identity disorders. This is a very real issue. It’s not funny, it’s sad. Any of you who have members of your family that are in the lifestyle—we have a member of our family that is. This is not funny. It’s a very sad life. It’s part of Satan, I think, to say this is gay. It’s anything but gay.”

Funny, but her brand of “profound compassion” sounds just like Christianist bigotry to me. Exactly like it, in fact. Is there ANY discernable difference?

Here’s another winner. Bachmann on hate-monger Fred Phelps:

“I almost think that the gay community has hired this guy, or created this guy, to do what he does. He is their best friend.”

Noted and quoted.

Westboro Baptist Church threaten to protest at the funeral of Ryan Dunn of ‘Jackass’

Above, from their idiotic press release

They protest at the funerals of gays, dead American servicemen and now the sociopaths of the Westboro Baptist Church are threatening to protest the funeral of comedic dare-devil Ryan Dunn of the “Jackass” gang. They called Dunn a “drab pervert [who] hawked porn-level filth (e.g. toy car up his rectum for entertainment.” Gimme a break:

The notorious Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan. announced Tuesday that its members will protest any public service held for ‘Jackass’ star Ryan Dunn, who died on Monday in a high speed car accident, according to Daily Local of West Chester in Pennsylvania.

The church has a history of protesting high-profile burials, often calling deaths a punishment from God. The group has been denounced as radical by many Christian organizations.

“WBC will picket any public memorial/funeral held for Dunn, warning all not to make a mock of sin, and to fear and obey God,” the group said in a news release. It’s headline states: “Ryan Dunn is in hell!”

DellaVechia, Reilly, Smith & Boyd Funeral Home, Inc said services and interment for Dunn will be private. A public memorial service will be announced at a later date.

What a bunch of flaming assholes. I hope Dunn’s friends and family take them on “Jackass”-style if they go through with this. That could be fun to watch!

Bikers force Westboro Baptist Church to eat exhaust as Joplin protest abandoned

Over the weekend, a planned action by the Westboro Baptist Church in Joplin, Missouri to coincide with President Obama’s memorial to the people killed in the storms, was abandoned after a large group of bikers arrived and made things hot for them. Some truckers are alleged to have blocked members of the hate group from leaving a truck stop area until the event was over. Apparently the one guy who did manage to show up on site was a “freelance” nutcase and not actually a member of the “church.”

According to one first-hand account, reposted on Raw Story, it went down something like this:

“When the police saw what was about to happen they grabbed him and tried to push the bikers back!! Then they told the guy “run you stupid mother fucker” And I am quoting!!  We heard that more of them were blocked at a local truck stop by a few awesome truckers!! They pinned them in until it was over, not sure about this one just what we were hearing!! You may think of bikers as mean or lawless but when it comes to things like this they really step up!!!”

Rev. Fred Phelps on the AZ tragedy: ‘Thank God for the violent shooter’

You knew it was coming. Rev. Fred Phelps has made a statement about the shooting in Arizona and he says “Thank God for the violent shooter.” Appointed by God himself! Repent or perish! Yawn. (But God spared the Phelps family from a similar fate?)

The Phelps family just can’t seem to help themselves, can they? The berserk “us vs. everyone else in the entire world” attitude of the Phelps clan is impressive, isn’t it? I mean how unlikely is it that there would be so few defectors from their insane ranks? You’d think that a need to procreate outside of their gene pool alone would prompt one of them to wake up at some point or another to the fact that 99.9% of anyone who’s every been exposed to them would be happy to piss on their graves one day.

Fascinating that there is a genetic component to all of this insanity, though, I must say. This is one crazy, fucked up family.

‘Santa Claus Will Take You to Hell’

image
“You better not pout, you better not cry”

Westboro Baptist Church would be dangerous if they weren’t so fucking insane. In this sick little ditty sung to the tune of “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” the Phelps clan concoct a rape scenario involving children and a non-existent mythic character named Santa Claus. These freaks are fantasizing on a level so evil that Charlie Manson would cross the street to avoid their collective bad karma.

Forget about chestnuts, these religious whack jobs would love to see us all roasting on an open fire.

Santa ain’t coming to town. He doesn’t exist. But Jesus does and he’s pissed.

Looks like the hate-filled, hateful haters of the Westboro Baptist Church got an unambiguous glimpse of how the outside world feels about them, yet again this weekend, when their tires were slashed in Kansas, but it gets even better, as no one would help them:

McALESTER - Members of a Kansas church that protests at military funerals may have found themselves in the wrong town Saturday.

Shortly after finishing their protest at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey of McAlester, a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to their minivan, only to discover that its front and rear passenger-side tires had been slashed.

To make matters worse, as their minivan slowly hobbled away on two flat tires, with a McAlester police car following behind, the protesters were unable to find anyone in town who would repair their vehicle, according to police.

Over 1000 people turned out to counter-protest the group drown out the cult’s by now familiar refrain of “God Hates Fags” etc, etc.

Update: Dangerous Minds pal Matt Dunnerstick points out, “God hates flats.”
