This super creepy ‘It’s a Small World: Zombie Apocalypse’ ride in China will give you nightmares

Located at the foot of Mountain Lion in the center of China’s Suzhou New District lies “Suzhou Amusement Land,” a 540,000 square meter Disneyland knock-off theme park complete with Pirate World, and a Jungle Ride where you can actually shoot at the animals with a gun. Most worthy of note is “Small World,” a ten-minute dark ride which at first glance is almost a perfect copy of Mary Blair‘s design for the 1964 World’s Fair. When the boat ride begins the familiar “It’s a Small World” theme eerily echoes out of sync throughout the tunnels and that’s when you notice that something isn’t quite right. The colorful sets are dimly lit with store-bought Christmas lights, the audio-animatronic children aren’t moving at all (in fact they are all pale, blue and green-faced apocalyptic zombies) and half the equipment isn’t working. With a chilling atmosphere and supposed strange smells you can’t help but imagine just how terrifying it would be if you were to get stuck on this ride and forced to find a way on your own.

Halfway through, the ride takes another strange turn when you are greeted by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who are haphazardly thrown in alongside characters from Voltron. Copyright laws have been very difficult to enforce in China, however, it should be noted that “It’s a Small World” is the only Disney song that is of fair use. At the request of UNICEF, Disney left the song copyright-free as a gift to the world’s children. Strangely enough, there is yet a second, equally terrifying “It’s a Small World” knock-off in China which includes a dead baby hanging from the ceiling just eighteen miles away from the official, newly opened Disneyland park in Shanghai. Enjoy these video stills and ride-through courtesy of the website Theme Park Review and good luck falling asleep tonight.

Although it doesn’t explicitly say so anywhere, it seems pretty obvious to me that this life-size sculpture “Broken girl” by Adnagaporp is meant to be Warhol Superstar Edie Sedgwick.

Well, a zombie Edie, anyway.

‘Carry On Zombie’: An original poster by Paul Garner

image

Sometimes you can judge a film by its poster, as can be seen by this fab poster by artist Paul Garner for an imaginary flick, Carry On Zombie. Indeed, I’m so taken with Mr Garner’s illustration, I’d pay good money to see Sid, Kenneth, Babs and co. as the living dead.

Based in Brighton, Garner has produced an incredible array of art work for magazines, papers,  CDs and posters, all of which is available for view over at his site.

I do hope Mr Garner’s excellent poster will inspire someone to resurrect (ahem) the Carry On… franchise. Meantime, here’s a trailer for one they made earlier, Carry On Screaming.

Carry on Zombie poster copyrighted to Paul Garner.

I had a good little chuckle while watching the trailer for the new zombie horror flick Osombie. You knew something like this was going to happen, right? Will I watch it once it’s been released? Probably not, but I thought I’d share the trailer with you anyways. Enjoy Osombie!

Mystery mugshot: Cocaine psychosis or… what?

This has to be one of the most perplexing mugshots so far in 2012. Why you ask? Because there’s zero explaintion in the arresting report addressing the white substance all over Travis Williams’ face. Is he a zombie or does he work for Tony Montana?

From the Miami New Times:

Travis Williams (click photo to enlarge) was arrested on Wednesday for disorderly conduct/breach of the peace, which does not address the question as to why he’s covered in a white powder. (If the charge was trafficking exactly one skin-load of cocaine, that’d be another matter.) We got the arrest affidavit (below) from the Miami Police Department and it provided tantalizingly… little.

Williams was apparently at the Bayside Marketplace around noon, screaming at and trying to hit patrons, when cops rolled up. He allegedly got into a fighting stance and said: “Fuck you, motherfucker!”

The police officer who filled out the report clearly is the unflappable type. Let’s see, African-American ethnicity, 5-foot-9, 164 pounds, brown eyes, bald… and here’s the best part: Under “scars, tattoos, and unique physical features”, the officer wrote “None visible.”

I’m goin’ with the zombie theory?

Zombies vs. Teabaggers

image

Look who wants in on the class war: It’s the undead vs. the Teabaggers as hordes of pro-labor zombies roamed around Madison, Wisconsin over the weekend in search of some brains. Looking for high IQ dining anywhere near the Tea party-dominated statehouse was perhaps a poor idea for a zombie banquet…

Zombies have civil rights, too, you know: Minneapolis city attorney’s office has decided to pay seven “zombies” and their attorney $165,000 after they were jailed following a street theater protest. From the Star-Tribune:

The payout, approved by the City Council on Friday, settles a federal lawsuit the seven filed after they were arrested and jailed for two days for dressing up like zombies in downtown Minneapolis on July 22, 2006, to protest “mindless” consumerism.

When arrested at the intersection of Hennepin Avenue and 6th Street N., most of them had thick white powder and fake blood on their faces and dark makeup around their eyes. They were walking in a stiff, lurching fashion and carrying four bags of sound equipment to amplify music from an iPod when they were arrested by police who said they were carrying equipment that simulated “weapons of mass destruction.”

However, they were never charged with any crime.

Young Louis Farrakhan Sings About Transsexuals and Zombies

Who knew Louis Farrakhan was a happening Calypso singer as a young man? Before there was “Lola” or “Take A Walk On The Wild Side”  there was The Charmer’s own composition “Is She Is Or Is She Ain’t” wherein the future Nation of Islam leader grapples with gender identity politics over a festive jam. Yay ?

Bonus B-Side: “Back to Back”. A song about a zombie jamboree, natch.
