Much of Weijue Wang’s art is fluffy and pink and displays a strong emphasis on the mammaries of the female human, but underneath her seemingly fun and bouncy subject matter is a very dark subtext. Very dark.

Wang’s work was showcased at StARTup Art Fair in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago. Here is the statement of purpose Wang submitted for the event, which was rather striking:

As an emerging Chinese female artist who lives in an age of consumerism in China, I am bombarded with the commodification of everything in every aspect of my daily life. I am interested especially in the commodification of the female bodies. Contemporary women are freer to think and act. With enhanced freedom, however, some threat their self-esteem by seeking painful cosmetic surgeries to modify their appearances. In the name of beauty, some women commoditize their bodies to fit into the sexualized beauty norms. These soft and fluffy female private part jewelries and sculptures are born in my needle’s sharp penetration through the felt. Underneath their harmless domesticity, I want to unveil the profound violence and irony in female commodification and mass-produced beauty. By showing my works in a hotel room setting, the sexual and domestic feeling of my works will be enhanced. Basically, I will create a room of fetish of female body parts. Some pieces will be lying on the bed (like the Airport Dream II ), while the sound that will be coming out of the piece will allow the audience to expand their imagination.

As you can see, Wang views her work, which would include a “room of fetish of female body parts,” as directly confronting the consumer culture that has arisen in China, which brings along with it inordinate stress and concern over the appearance of females. Wang has noticed that women in China are increasingly turning to breast enhancement, which in her eyes is equivalent to self-mutilation.

In Kelsey Lannin’s article at Creators, she gestured at the two enormous “breasts” propped up on her pink bed and said, “I have huge boobs now! They might look cute and fluffy but they are borne out of violence. Of a needle penetrating through the felt.”

A work of hers called “Airport Dream” consists in part of round pink balls (yes, with “nipples”) suspended on pieces of string. The title is a reference to the fact that in China, the word airport is a common insult directed at flat-chested women!

“I definitely want to expand on it,” Wang told Lannin. “There are still a lot of women being called ‘airport’ in China.”

Artist scans her own body to make ‘boob and butt’ mugs (NSFW)

Alice Lang, an artist based in Brisbane, Australia, makes utterly unique mugs that resemble anatomically correct body parts of the female form.

What sets the mugs apart is that Lang uses herself as a model. She uses 3D scanners to commit the exact contours of her own torso to a mold and then she hand-paints color details onto the resultant doll porcelain. Those details include her own nipples, moles, freckles, and pubic hair.

The two mugs actually interlock and can be stacked on top of each other to create a full torso.

Quoth the New Museum of Contemporary Art:

This action is intended to instigate mindful social interaction by making the user playfully complicit in this parody of the objectification, dissemination and consumption of anonymous women’s bodies. This interaction seeks to examine the female body as the site of objectification and explore how women can enact ownership and agency over their own body within this complicated context.

Lang is a recent graduate from the MFA program at CalArts and has residencies in Canada, New York, and Los Angeles on her resume. She is a founding co-director of LEVEL, an artist-run initiative in Brisbane.

Much more after the jump (did we mention these mugs are NSFW?).........

Russian artist paints Putin portraits with her boob

St. Petersburg-based artist, Irina Romanovskaya, has been causing a stir in her Mother Russia by painting portraits of political leaders, including Vladimir Putin, with her boob.

Romanovskaya has noted that “paintings painted with breasts sell well and for a lot.”

Has late capitalism come to Russia?

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, founder and the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, as painted by Romanovskaya’s left boob.

The artist, quoted in a Russian article posted to her LiveJournal, translated [in amusing broken-English] via Google Translate:

In this unusual technique I decided to draw a well-known politician. Zhirinovsky bright politician, how could I not draw him ... for a portrait Vladimir Zhirinovsky, I chose the color purple, my favorite. I heartily Vladimir Zhirinovsky! Artist Irina Romanov painted a portrait of Vladimir Zhirinovsky [with her] breast. Especially since breast painting difficult to draw, the process is very time consuming and not fast any inaccuracy can lead to what is necessary to re-start all over. For the portrait used only breast. In this technique, I have in front of strangers do not draw. Irina Romanov technique will update continuously , working hard and getting the hang of drawing [with] breasts and body. Foreign collectors often buy my works, paintings painted [with] breasts [sell] well and expensively sold. [Her] works are in private collections in Russia and abroad.

Vladimir Putin, as painted by Irina Romanovskaya’s left boob.

In the video below, she demonstrates the process… which is remarkably totally safe for work.

There’s a “Left boobs painted by left boob” joke someone could make here, but I think serious breast art aficionados such as ourselves are above all that, aren’t we?

Chocolate bars in the shape of boobies—‘to attract men’s attention’

Designers Constantin Bolimond (Russia) and Maksim Ali (U.S.) have teamed up to create bars of chocolate in the shape of female breasts. The product is called Titses.

At this point the product appears to be in the prototype stage.

These milk chocolate bars are molded in the shape of women’s breasts. Customers can choose from sizes S to XL. Perhaps in an effort to deflect attention from their own sillier or baser instincts, Bolimond and Ali have given their prototype a veneer of intellectual sophistication by appealing to gender inequality: “The aim of the project Titses milk is to attract mens’ attention to the product that is so loved by women but is often overlooked by a strong half of the population.”

In the world of pop culture, chocolate appeals inordinately to women—the cliché holds that single, unloved women distract from their sorrows by consuming Godiva chocolate, or whatever, which leads to weight gain and decreased attractiveness, an unfortunate cycle. However, it’s still kinda questionable that chocolate, as one of the world’s most popular products, really has an exclusive relationship with one gender or the other.

It’s much more likely that the driving impulse here, rather than rectifying some imbalance, was, you know, to make boobies out of chocolate.

‘Presidents with Boob Faces’ is perhaps the most important artistic movement of our time

Emily Deutchman is the Picasso of people who do watercolors of US presidents with boobs on their faces. I mean it! I cannot fathom her equal, much less envision a successor to her artistic idiom. Her Presidents with Boob Faces series is 44 canvases of commanders-in-chief with mammaries fused to their mugs. For Lincoln, it’s the beard, for Reagan, the neck sag—it’s all very intuitive. All the paintings are based off of official presidential portraits except for Obama, which uses the Shepard Fairey graphic. And what is the purpose of her work? From her website:

Presidents with Boob Faces takes the tradition of presidential portraits and, with wry humor, subverts the solemnity of these iconic figures by transforming their faces with schoolboy “boob doodle.”

The work twists the historic grandeur of portraiture and national pomp with this lowbrow interjection. While enjoying the comedic potential of George Washington with boob cheeks, Deutchman also engages with a painterly series and the ready-made both provided by the presidential portraits. The use of the series explores the permutations of one concept played out 44 times and the possibility of diversity found in that idea.

Sometimes Deutchman uses photographs of actual boobs to append her portraiture, leaving the viewer wondering if they’re admiring a legit tit. Personally, I’m partial to the Gerald Ford—is it the smile that draws me in, or the fullness? Maybe it’s just my insatiable desire to discuss the oft-overlooked Ford administration? Should you be taken with the beauty and vision of Deutchman’s work, you’re in luck! All paintings are for sale, and she asks that you contact her at presidentswithboobfaces@gmail.com for inquiries!
