‘MANOS: The Hands of Fate’: The worst movie ever made is now the best coloring book ever made!

The cover of the ‘MANOS: The Hands of Fate’ coloring book.

I’m not going to waste my time schooling you low-budget-movie-loving Dangerous Minds readers on the 1966 cult film, MANOS: The Hands of Fate. Even if you weren’t around when the film made its debut in and around Texas (following which director Harold P. Warren proudly dubbed his movie as “the worst film ever made”) you were probably hipped to its existence by the popular television series, Mystery Science Theater 3000. MST3K hilariously dissected MANOS: The Hands of Fate during their fourth season in 1993 while simultaneously exposing another generation to the mythical theatrical flop that only came to be as the result of a bet between Warren and screenwriter Stirling Silliphant. The film has since been immortalized with a documentary in 2008, a video game in 2012, and a stellar Blu-ray restoration by Synapse Films from the original 16mm Ektachrome camera workprint in 2015. Then, in 2016, Horrid Coloring Books created a 200-page coloring book/tribute to the fucked-up flick that even The Master would approve of.

Since I’m guessing this unique coloring book was probably not under your Christmas tree this year (and if it was, marry the person who gave it to you immediately) I have good news for you. The book, which is currently in its third edition, can be had for $17.95 here. Now, enough talk! MANOS will be served!

The hilariously f*cked-up art of defacing kids’ coloring books (NSFW)

05colorcorr.jpg

Looking for a scintillating opening paragraph to begin this piece on hilariously defaced kids’ coloring books, I thought it’d be fun to share a few of the images with a psychoanalyst friend to get his take. Oh boy, was that a bad idea. His eventual response after a few hours of email silence was:

I’d really like to ask the question “Where did the bad man touch you?”

Note to self: Humor and analysis don’t mix.

Second note to self: Never go to an analyst.

But at least I got my opener, well, other than saying:

You’ll never be able to look your favorite childhood cartoon characters in the eye again after a swatch of these Coloring Book Corruptions. Just take a moment to look at what they’ve done to poor Eeyore or innocent little Bambi and darn-it! even Bert ‘n’ Ernie and you’ll see what I mean. (Though to be fair, the Bert ‘n’ Ernie picture does seem somehow kinda likely, though why I’m not quite sure.)

Since the dawn of cave paintings and other cliched tropes, people have been drawing dicks and tits and generally fucking up other people’s artwork with occasional gut-busting results. Admit it. What was more fun in high school? Listening to the calculus teacher drone on about whatever the fuck calculus is or drawing dicks on the pictures in some text book?

The doodling talent behind Coloring Book Corruptions explains how it all started out of “boredom.”

Boredom will produce a wide variety of things. One fine day whilst visiting my cousin, we decided to color. If not for her enjoyment of this hobby, this past time would have never been born. We sat down to begin and I casually flipped through a rather large coloring book. Perhaps it was fated that this particular coloring book was full of slightly deranged looking animals. I could not help but imagine them plotting and feuding with one another. Inspired, I began to turn a seemingly innocent children’s coloring book into something both awful and hilarious (at least to me). I feel this concept should be shared with the world based on the twisted amusement it has brought me.

Coloring Book Corruptions seemed to disappear for a couple of years (or maybe that was just me not paying attention), but now you too can enhance some treasured childhood memory with some pencils or crayons right here.

Color Me Hip: The Hipster Coloring Book, 1962

Hipsters ain’t what they used to be. Once upon a time, hipsters were seen as unreconstructed Glenn Quagmires (“Giggity”), who lived in fashionable penthouse apartments with their serious hi-fis, their Formica-topped minibars, their circular water beds, tiger print bedsheets, and polished mirrored ceilings. They had no man buns, no Alice bands, and certainly no handcrafted and carefully tended facial hair. These hipsters thought of themselves as free spirits who only cared about an ice-chilled cocktail and a swinging hot young chick to share their bed. This, apparently, was your average urban hipster as discerned by Cavalier magazine in November 1962.

Boy, how times have changed...

Fortunately, Cavalier was so amused by the hipster phenomenon they produced a coloring book for readers to fill in while they rued their lack of good fortune in having such a swinging, happening life…

#NSFW Totally Naughty Coloring Book (Volume 1)

Coloring is supposed to be therapeutic. Instead of popping a Xanax to calm your nerves, some people choose to use coloring books to lower their stress levels. I’ve used coloring books before to destress and I must admit they do work. There are so many adult-themed coloring books out there nowadays. I knew they existed I just never searched for them before.

For whatever reason I got curious and I decided to search for the “naughtier”-themed ones. Lo and behold I found ‘em! I’ve added links of where to purchase each book with a few image examples. I had to pick the tamer images for this website. Trust me when I tell you these coloring books can get quite raunchy.

The book you see above (with its page examples below) is called #NSFW Totally Naughty Coloring Book (Volume 1). You can get it here.

This adult coloring book is through Pornhub. It sells for $20 here. According to its description it celebrates “themes of sex, body, queerness, gender fluidity and erotic expression” and their book “invites artists and amateurs alike to color both in and outside of the lines.”

The Indie Rock Coloring Book

As anyone who’s visited a Barnes & Noble lately knows, one of the major publishing trends is adult coloring books. As the Washington Post reported earlier this year, sales of colored pencils rose 26.3% in 2015, and that’s not the only indicator of the trend. Late last year Walmart Walmart added a four-foot section for adult coloring books in several hundred of its branches, and Target added the books to its offerings around the same time.

Anticipating the trend, in 2009 the Yellow Bird Project, a Canadian charity project specializing in band T-shirts, unveiled The Indie Rock Coloring Book geared for fans of the Shins, the National, MGMT, and many other indie rock acts. The purpose of the Yellow Bird Project is to support Trekstock, a charity in Great Britain that seeks to raise funds for young adults with cancer.

Pierre de Reeder of Rilo Kiley penned the foreword. Matt Berninger of the National provided the following blurb: “This is the greatest coloring book since coloring was invented. I’ve decided to have kids just so I’ll have somebody to give this book to.”

Here are a few examples from the book, which is still available at Yellow Bird and also at Amazon.

Witty and macabre Addams Family coloring book from 1965

I’ve been following that “pick 3 fictional characters to represent you” game on Facebook with great pleasure. I’m dead certain that more than a few people in the Dangerous Minds readership have picked Morticia Addams as one of their role models….. then there’s Wednesday, I"ll bet Wednesday made some lists…. or Gomez? How about Gomez? Give Gomez some love!

The Raul Julia/Anjelica Huston movies of the 1990s were all well and good, but for me nothing beats the eccentric and buoyant Addams Family TV series of the 1960s. (We mustn’t, however, forget the essential contributions made by Charles Addams in the pages of The New Yorker.) John Astin and Carolyn Jones were pitch-perfect as the morbid and independent-minded heads of family. Just yesterday we featured some death-obsessed cartoons that succeeded in getting readers’ attention, but really, who beats the Addams Family at that game?

Nobody, that’s who.

This charming coloring book was produced in 1965, the second year of the series, with a bitchin’ color cover. My favorite page here is the one with the caption “Touché, Darling!” because the joke, as far as I can tell, is simply that they’re weird because they enjoy fencing in the middle of the day, while the rest of the world is at work. No wonder the Addams Family are such great role models!

Color me impressed: Lemmy and David Bowie-themed coloring books are here!

The cover of ‘Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead: Color the Ace of Spades’ coloring book by Feral House.

We can now thank the fantastic publisher of fringy Feral House for two more things—a pair of new coloring books based on the dearly departed Lemmy Kilmister and the Thin White Duke himself, David Bowie.

The cover of ‘David Bowie: Color the Starman’ coloring book by Feral House.

Of the things you get to color in the Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead: Color the Ace of Spades book are images of Lem as a metal version of Jesus’ crucifiction into the famous “Warpig” logo and shooting you the bird (because, Lemmy) as well as works by Joe Petangno, the artist behind the cover of Motörhead’s 1986 album Orgasmatron. Bowie’s book, David Bowie: Color the Starman includes artistic contributinons by filmaker and artist Mica O’Herlihy, illustrator Tony Millionaire, Plastic Crimewave (aka Chicago-based music historian and doer of many cool things, Steve Krakow), and underground comic hero Mike Diana.

I’m sure one or both of these coloring books are somehow going to find their way to a large number of our Dangerous Minds readers immediately. I’m also pretty sure either of these books would make a great gift for your Bowie and Lemmy-loving pals. I’ve posted images from inside the pages of both books below which are available now via Feral House for $15.95.

And as if this news isn’t cool enough Feral House is also running a coloring contest that kindly requests that you send a finished photo of your favorite images from either coloring book to them via submissions@feralhouse.com. Your handiwork will then be featured on Feral’s social media and you’ll be entered to win a copy of two of Feral’s upcoming coloring books for 2017—Muhammad Ali—The Greatest Coloring Book of All Time and one that you’ll only really need a purple crayon for, Prince—The Coloring Book.

Cleveland braces for the Republican National Convention with a rude coloring book

Trump emulating King Kong on Cleveland’s landmark, Terminal Tower

I moved to Cleveland three years ago, and as a Cleveland resident, I think of the impending Republican National Convention, which hits the city next week, with a substantial amount of dread and foreboding. Cleveland has been gearing up for this event for many, many months, and the news that Donald Trump’s odious political platform has given a great many prominent Republicans cause to spend the week elsewhere is a bit of a bummer for the city’s powers that be.

Of course, Cleveland is a solidly Democratic city, and so it’s going to be bizarre to have Trump and his cohorts here all week. It’s hard not to entertain visions of liberal protesters being beaten down by riot police or violence-prone Trump supporters. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that liberal activists will see that the better part of valor is to let Trump hang himself on his own idiocy and not play to his supporters’ worst instincts, but I do understand the impulse to register dissent on the ghastly policies Trump would impose.

The bulk of the week’s activity kicks off on Sunday night, for a massive opening night party at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center on Sunday, and will conclude with Trump’s speech on Thursday night—hopefully with a minimum of damage to human tissue and inanimate property. I’ve heard countless friends tell me that they’re going to “stay away from downtown” all week, and I certainly intend to follow suit.

Cleveland Scene is the city’s leading alt-weekly, and this week they ran several pages of a would-be “Republican National Convention coloring book” that features various Republican, ah, “dignitaries” (Trump, Cruz, Christie, etc.) juxtaposed with Cleveland sites such as the oversized FREE stamp in Willard Park, the weekend hangout known as Whiskey Island, and the “Guardians of Traffic” on the Hope Memorial Bridge.

Draw the graffiti on CBGB’s bathroom walls (or Joey Ramone taking a piss?) in the Punk Rock Fun Time Activity Book!

Many of you Dangerous Minds readers have likely noticed that coloring books marketed to adults has become kind of a huge “thing” over the last couple of years. The fact is that adult-oriented coloring books are not a new thing by any means and their history dates back to the early 60s.

JFK Adult Coloring Book by Mort Drucker, 1962
JFK Coloring Book by Mort Drucker, 1962

In 1962, a coloring book by Mort Drucker (a cartoonist and illustrator for MAD magazine for over 50 years) published the beautifully satirical JFK Coloring Book. Drucker’s book spent fourteen weeks at the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list. Sales of adult coloring books skyrocketed to one-million dollars that very same year.

Match the band to its logo!

FIx Siouxie's FACE!

I myself am a fan of coloring books and can attest that the pursuit is really quite fucking relaxing and devoid of any kind of stress. I’m an especially a big fan of the artist Aye Jay, who has several super cool coloring/activity books out there like my personal favorite, the Heavy Metal Fun Time Activity Book which garnered praise from the late Ronnie James Dio who said “At last, an activity book for metal heads.”

Connect the Velvet Dots!

Another excellent addition to Aye Jay’s ever growing catalog is the topic of this post, the Punk Rock Fun Time Activity Book. I mean, I can’t think of many things more fun than spending an hour decorating the bathroom of CBGB’s the way I (mostly) remember it or putting massive amounts of eyeliner on Siouxsie Sioux’s makeup-free face. Can you? Punk Rock Fun Time Activity Book retails for $9.95, get it here.

Color me disenchanted, ‘Coloring for Grown-Ups’ paints a bleak picture

Woe betide those who might cling to the dreams of their youth. You want financial security? Pffft. A rich social life? You gotta’ be kidding! Romantic love? Just who do you think you are? You may not be able to transport yourself back to a time of starry-eyed optimism, but you can reflect on the miserable state of modernity with therapeutic past times of your youth. Coloring for Grown-Ups has it all—self-medication, disaffection, alienation, and yes—the soul crushing disappointment so many of us face daily in our cubicle farms!

And the best part is, you can print out as many as you want. Where else in life do you get a do-over?

You can buy Coloring for Grown-Ups from their website, or get a few samples from The Wall Breakers.

Art Nouvulva: Vintage ‘C*nt Coloring Book’ is all kinds of gynocentric NSFW

Cunt Coloring book

Originally published in 1975 by lesbian activist and artist Tee A. Corinne, the Cunt Coloring Book was originally intended as a sex education resource. Of course, the parade of vulvas doesn’t always inform so much as affect the viewer, especially as the depictions become increasingly stylized throughout the book.

Regardless, the project is a classic example of feminist/queer art, representative of the more experimental “second-wave” of sapphic activism. Corinne set out to create something interactive for both children and adults:

’In 1973 I set out to do drawings of women’s genitals for use in sex education groups. I wanted the drawings to be lovely and informative, to give pleasure and affirmation. I organized the drawings into a coloring book because a major way we learn to understand the world, as children, is by coloring. As adults many of us still need to learn about our external sexual anatomy.

But what about the “C-word” title? Wasn’t that an impediment to sales, or were the 70s really that much more open of an era? Corinne explained:

The Cunt Coloring Book, published in 1975, was immediately and wildly popular, although many people complained about the “awful” title. Three printings later, in 1981, the title was changed to Labiaflowers and the book virtually died. So much for euphemisms.

anatomical
Okay, starting out pretty anatomical here—no big surpise.

comic book style
And now we’re into more of a comic book-style abstractions—a bit grotesque, in my opinion. This isn’t the first time you’ll see a hand in the picture

And of course, someone has made a YouTube video of their own Cunt Coloring Book! Because what’s the use of vagina art if you can’t share it?
