We’ve blogged often about various cool pop culture Russian nesting dolls here on Dangerous Minds before, but I think these Addams Family matryoshka dolls might be my very favorite. They’re just so lovely! The dolls are made by Mothmouth and it appears this set was a custom order for a client. Sadly, there’s no price. You can contact Mothmouth here to see if she can make more and check on pricing.

 
Since the matryoshka dolls by Mothmouth aren’t readily available, I did find another set of Addams Family nesting dolls by Bobobabushka. The handmade set of wood and acrylics sell for $210 on Etsy. I dig these, too.

San Francisco-based designer Andy Stattmiller has certainly won my heart over with these excellent matryoshka dolls that pay homage to everyone’s favorite late-‘90s bowling-themed stoner movie, The Big Lebowski by Joel and Ethan Coen.

Die-hard fans of the movie won’t need to be told that the dolls represent, in descending order, Walter Sobchak, The Dude, Jesus, Maude Lebowski, The Big Lebowski, The Stranger, and the innocent marmot that gets tossed into the Dude’s bathtub.

Wait: No Donny? No Donny??

Actually, Stattmiller accurately points out that Donny is represented by the Folger’s can Walter is clutching.  Walter is also carrying ex-wife’s pomeranian, sans bowling shoes (I assume anyway, it’s in a carrier).

Australian artist Irene Hwang’s Etsy shop Bobobabushka is full Russian “Matryoshka” nesting dolls that bear the likeness of alt-cinema misfits from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, This is Spinal Tap, Ghost World, Heathers, cult BBC TV show The Young Ones and various troublemakers from the films of Wes Anderson and the Coen Brothers.

Hwang’s customers even harassed her into making a nesting doll based on the lower-than-low-budget 1966 cult film, Manos: The Hands of Fate and they are as excellent as Manos is horrible. A few of the cooler sets of Hwang’s hand-painted dolls ($120 - $190 a set) follow.

I’m on some sort of David Bowie kick today because I’m lovin’ these David Bowie handmade nesting dolls by Tanja Stark. From her website, Suburban Gothic:

I painted these over several months, and for those of you who aren’t familiar with the images, these are the covers of iconic Bowie albums including Aladdin Sane, Low (my favourite doll - the orange one), Young Americans, Ziggy Stardust and Diamond Dogs.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Ms. Stark’s dolls are for sale.
