The charming cover of Merry Crassmas

The end of 1981 likely saw highly influential British anarcho-punk band Crass both energized and exhausted after dropping their third album, the remarkably complex feminist manifesto Penis Envy.

One speculates that the idea for their final release of the year came to the band as a “eureka!” moment. Why not release a 7” novelty record made up of a department-store-style, organ-and-drum-machine medley of their anthemic and obnoxious tunes, including “Big A Little A,” “Punk is Dead,” “Big Hands,” “Contaminational Power” and others? Slap on an innocuous Santa Claus intro and obnoxious outro at the end, pop it into a sleeve with a strange and horrific collage of an Xmas-day family holiday scene by Gee Vaucher, and you’ve got an instant inside-joke punk classic on your hands.

As a horror-day bonus for you Crass-heads, here’s a wide-ranging, as-yet-spotlighted 2007 interview from pancrack.tv with your man, drummer Penny Rimbaud…

After 30 years of pioneering the UK dub scene, with forays into industrial music, and collaborating with artists like the eternally youthful Lee “Scratch” Perry and Skip McDonald, producer and founder of On-U Sound records, Adrian Sherwood, shows no signs of losing his passion. The man is still on a mission to reggaefy the planet.

To mark the label’s 30th anniversary in 2011, we will be reissuing a number of classic On-U Sound albums, a selection of new releases, renewed live activity and the release of an extensive box-set. The year of celebration begins in early March with the release of a new African Head Charge album and 3 classic reissues – New Age Steppers debut, Creation Rebel’s highly influential Starship Africa and African Head Charge’s hard-to-find Off The Beaten Track.

The plan will then be to release further new albums and classic reissues throughout 2011. The new releases planned include a collection of contemporary remixes of Lee Perry’s On-U Sound output, the long-awaited On-U produced Little Axe album and a New Age Steppers long-player – their first since Foundation Steppers in 1983 – featuring vocal contributions from the late Ari Up and Mark Stewart amongst others. Details of further new releases will be announced shortly.

Amongst the classic reissues are albums from some of the label’s most acclaimed artists including Lee Perry, Dub Syndicate, Bim Sherman, Tackhead, Little Annie and Singers & Players. There are also plans for a deluxe box-set which will include extensive sleeve-notes from Adrian Sherwood, rare and un-released tracks from the archive, a collection of classic tracks and a selection of some of Adrian’s finest remixes.

In this interview with Zwarte Jas, Adrian discusses his upcoming projects and the reggae/punk/rap connection and its political relevance in Britain.

The brief clips of Lee Perry performing demand to be seen in full. So far, I’m coming up snake eyes.

‘Downtown 81’ starring Jean Michel Basquiat: Watch it now

Downtown 81 is more dream than reality, softening the edges and rounding off the corners of a much rougher reality than the film depicts. I was there and I know most of the people involved with the making of the film. We were young, broke and fearless. We flourished below 14th st. in an atmosphere filled with a kind of beautiful dread. You never knew where the city was heading. It was a giant, stinking, drunken beast that clattered, stumbled and lurched but never came to a stop. It’s different now, domesticated and safe. The wildness is gone - the beast shot in the heart with a tranquilizer dart.

The pleasure of Downtown 81 is in watching 19 year old Jean Michel Basquiat gliding past beautifully photographed downtown landmarks to a soundtrack of seminal New York music of the era.

Downtown 81’ was shot in 1980-81. Originally titled New York Beat’ it was written and co-produced by the well known writer Glenn O’Brien, produced by Maripol, the art director and stylist, and directed by photographer Edo Bertoglio, all of whom were deeply involved in the art, music and fashion scenes of the time. The Director of photography was John McNulty, one of New York’s top lighting men, shooting his first feature.

The film is not a documentary, but presents a slightly exaggerated, romantic and magical version of the reality of the time. The entire cast is composed of the movers and shakers on the downtown scene. In 1981, business problems interrupted the completion of post-production, and parts of the film were lost in Europe. Finally after much searching, the missing materials were located in 1998. Post production was begun in 1999 and finished in 2000, supervised by Maripol and Glenn O’Brien and edited by director/editor Pamela French. Executive producer of the film is Michael Zilkha, whose Ze Records released recordings by severals of the bands in the film.

The cast includes Deborah Harry, and leading bands of the era including Kid Creole and the Coconuts, James White and the Blacks, DNA, Tuxedomoon, The Plastics, and Walter Steding and the Dragon People. Also heard on the soundtrack are rap legend Melle Mel, John Lurie, Lydia Lunch, Suicide, Vincent Gallo, Kenny Burrell and Basquiat’s own band, Gray.”

Downtown 81 also features my mentor the legendary Giorgio Gomelsky.

We’ve been having alot of fun here at Dangerous Minds sharing deconstructed songs from many of our rock and roll heroes. And in our neverending search to bring you the best isolated tracks we can get our music loving hands on, I present to you one of the more unusual discoveries I’ve come across: Lemmy’s vocals for ‘Ace Of Spades’.

I have the feeling that Lemmy usually goes with the first take.

Have we hit the threshold yet?

Nah.

The hardest working rocker in show business, the godfather of punk and heavy metal, wizened philosopher, shameless hedonist and virtually indestructible, presenting Lemmy Kilmister.

Lemmy talks about how the new, twentieth Motorhead album is shaped by the current political climate, and his his anger at the BP oil spill. “You can love the individual, but you can’t love the race… we’re arrogant bastards. We’re like a dose of crabs”, and adds that human cooperation could learn from our smaller fellows on this spinning planet: “talk to the ants, they’ve got communism working.”

Seasons greetings from Poly Styrene: Have yourself a scary little Xmas

I hate Xmas, so this new tune from Poly Styrene makes me quite happy. I’m happier still to see Ms. Styrene back in action and sounding so good. ‘Black Christmas’ was written by Poly and her daughter Celeste, who appears in the video.

This is from Poly’s second solo album (her last one was released 30 years ago) which coming out in March, 2011. It’s called ‘Generation Indigo’ and was produced by Youth (Killing Joke). I can’t wait. She seems to have worked thru her Hare Krishna phase.

The Modern Lovers vs. Legs And Co.: Apocaglitz Now!

Legs and Co. were a glitzy 70s British take on the much hipper sixties Shindig dancers. As corny as they were, what Legs lacked in style they made up in goofy enthusiasm.

Legs and Co. meet The Modern Lovers and it’s a marriage made in TV Hell.

Lacking either a live Jonathan or a suitable video clip, the BBC set this classic single to a dance routine from the ever-cheesy, Legs and Co.”
