In Heaven, everything is fine: Dimitri Drjuchin, this generation’s Keith Haring or Shepard Fairey?

No Evil, Acrylic on canvas, 60” by 48”

Dangerous Minds pal artist Dimitri Drjuchin, creator of the already iconic cover art for Father John Misty’s Fear Fun album and a portrait of Robert Anton Wilson that counter culture types all over Twitter and Facebook have adopted as their avatar (he also made this image of Mark Z. that got around a bit, perhaps some of you have seen it?) has a new art show opening up in San Francisco this weekend.

I’m extremely bullish on Dimitri’s work. I’d go so far to say that I reckon he’s the “new” Keith Haring or Shepard Fairey.

Coming from a background in street art murals, poster design and stickering, Dimitri’s “Fuck You, I’m Batman” stickers and “Tom Selleck Saved My Baby” posters (collaborations with comedian Greg Barris) seemed omnipresent in downtown Manhattan when I was in New York last. I haven’t seen such a notable street art presence since Fairey’s “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” stencil took over NYC a few decades ago or Haring’s three-eyed squares and atomic babies before that.

Drjuchin’s work is incredibly varied and yet, it’s all quite obviously by the same hand. So very graphic, so very direct. It can emotionally draw you into its world, in an instant, like the very best street art can. The balance, composition and Russian-constructivist pop art payload of his playful images are exquisitely his own.

And like his famous predecessors in street iconography, now that you’re seeing a few of Dimitri Drjuchin’s paintings here (more at his blog), you won’t wonder “who painted this” the next time you see one, will you?

“In Heaven” runs from April 12 to May 19th and there will be an artist reception on April 13th at 7pm.

Campfire Gallery, 3344 24th Street, San Francisco, CA 94110

Simply titled “Barrett” this 2010 coloring book by Piper Gates Design can’t be found anywhere on web (at least not anymore, the listings were removed from eBay).

If you really gotta have one, I’d suggest contacting Piper Gates Design directly at this email address: pipergatesdesign@hotmail.co.uk. Who knows? Maybe there are more?

Update: Ian Percival of Piper Gates Design wrote to DM to say: “The book was not removed from ebay but sold out of its original print run in 2 days.”

‘Bout time I’d say! You have no idea (or maybe you do?) how many people get these guys mixed up! Seriously, it drives me nuts!

The dual Nick Caves ran into each in New York and photographer, Kriston Capps of Architect magazine, snapped the photo to clear up any confusion for you…

One Nick is “an American fabric sculptor, dancer, and performance artist” and the other Nick does something with some seeds or something. Get it? Got it. Good.

‘Bee Queen’ dances and sips tea while wearing 12,000 live honey bees

Self-proclaimed “Bee Queen,” Sara Mapelli, does what comes to her naturally: Dancing around topless with over 12,000 bees.

I think of this dance as a duet among many. The bees push with their powerful wings from each side of my body, I resist and then I let go and flow and move with them. It is a deep meditation and I feel the hive mind surround me, hold me, and expand my body on a cellular level. I am a healer, dancer, artist, builder of structures and bee keeper.

Imma be honest here, this comes off a wee bit BATSHIT for my tastes, but who am I to pee in the Bee Queen’s honey pot? The bees certainly look like they’re enjoying themselves during tea time.

I’m not a big “skull art” fan, but I dig this photograph of a wee butterfly (or is that a moth?) landing inside the eye socket of a human skull.

The image, by photographer Marko Popadic, is called Oko (Polish for “eye”).

An ode to Sinéad O’Connor’s infamous televised “fuck you” to the Pope in 1992, Mick Minogue‘s “Sinéad” is one of the many featured contributions at Gallery 1988‘s Saturday Night Live-themed group art show.

Hello Aleister Crowley: The Magician Kitty

I’ve blogged about Hello Aleister Crowley (“Do What Meow Wilt”) before, but Etsy seller The All Seeing Cat has come up with a new variation: Hello Aleister Crowley: The Magician Kitty.

This is a one-of-a-kind polymer clay sculpture of Aleister Crowley replicating the 1910 photograph. “The Magician” in his robe and crown, armed with wand, cup, sword, bell, Book, and holy oil.

snip~

The small book on Crowley’s table was handmade and has many pages.

As one person points out in the comments on this thread a while ago: “Well, when will we see the Hello ´Genesis Breyer P-Orridge´ Kitty-version?”

Vincent Price talks Art and Acting: A scintillating interview from 1974

Vincent Price started collecting Art at the age of 12.

‘It was just one of those things. I’d read so many books on Art that one day I walked into a little art store, downtown St. Louis—mainly a framing place—they were having an exhibition of Rembrandt etchings, and there was one that really took my fancy.

‘I said, “How much is it?” And the man said, “It’s thirty-seven dollars, and fifty-cents.”

‘Well, I had $5 in my pocket, so I said could I put that down on it? And he said, “Yes.” I think he knew my father was good for the other thirty-two dollars and fifty-cents.

‘I paid for it myself, and from it, I learned a tremendous amount about the importance of the ownership of Art. The importance of buying a recording, of owning a work of Art, so you could study it, and live with it, and make it really your own, rather than just a thing you pick-up at a cursory glance in a museum. And [Art collecting] lasted all my life.’

Alas, Mr. Price had to sell his Rembrandt when he was broke, but his love of Art and Art History never left him.

It was in London, while working as an Art Historian at the Courtauld Institute, that Mr. Price’s love of theater began. As the theater was cheap in London, he saw as many productions as he could, before taking the plunge. He quickly moved form bit part to lead, and was on Broadway by 23.

A fascinating, and thoroughly enjoyable interview, in which Vincent Price relishes discussing those things closest to his heart—Art and Acting. From the public access TV series Day at Night, April 1974.
