Portraits in Licorice: New Work by Jason Mecier and Adam J. Ansell

New “eye candy” from Dangerous Minds fave Jason Mecier showing in San Francisco, with work from his partner, Adam J. Ansell, in an exhibit called We Like to Watch TV, opening August 1 and running through September 30.

I just love this portrait of “Dexter” done in licorice!

Celebrity mosaic portrait artist Jason Mecier and longtime partner, painter Adam J. Ansell, have teamed up to create a new body of work inspired by their favorite pastime… watching TV! Expect to see many faces from TV, movies, reality shows, sitcoms, documentaries, music videos and even commercials.

Adam’s edgy, high fashion, expressionistic paintings, ironically capture eccentric television personalities from The Real Housewives, Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, True Blood, and The Wendy Williams Show, to Millionaire Matchmaker, Larry King and many others.

Jason’s new works are striking and delicious, made entirely out of licorice! Thousands of fat free red and black licorice vines have been carefully glued into the likenesses of Mo’Nique, Judge Judy, Dexter, Freddy Krueger, Nomi Malone, Taylor Lautner, and others.

GLAMA - RAMA, 304 Valencia Street, San Francisco 415.861.4526
Opening Reception Sunday August 1, 6-9pm

These photographs taken for the US Farm Security Administration in the late 30s/early 40s are among the only color photographs taken during the Great Depression. They document the impact of the depression on small town and rural America. Each tells a story, each one a work of art.

Australian artist Scott Marr beautifully repurposed these fragile old shellac 78rpm discs with a small electric drill and a tiny bit of paint. By the way, did you know that shellac is a resin secreted by the female lac bug on trees in the forests of India and Thailand?

Here’s a really wonderful interview with one of my favorite photographers and artists, Glen E. Friedman. Do yourself a favor and watch the video. From State Magazine:

It was then that I found that the most beautiful, gripping color photographs were taken by just a single photographer, a very young teenager, by the name of Glen E. Friedman. Glen would go on to take these skills he learnt as a kid and apply them to his other great love in life, music. What you’re about to hear is an interview I did with Glen, who describes for you, some of his favourite shots from the last four decades. It’s a journey which has taken Glen from the mosh-pits of American punk-rock with bands like Black Flag and Fugazi to the suburban streets with hip-hop where Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, LL Cool J, A Tribe Called Quest and Ice-T all became subjects in front of Glen’s lens. So, less talk, more action; press play. After all, they say a picture is worth a thousand…well, you know…

Well this is a new comic concept for me:

Frustrated by societys failure to protect its most vulnerable citizens, Foreskin Man has taken up the fight agains male genital mutilation.

Aided by the power of his technologically advanced plasma boots, Foreskin Man flies above the city to hunt down criminals who cut the genitals of innocent boys.

It is the dawn of a new era. Circumcisers, beware!

The Evolution Of ‘The Tattooist’

Here we see the evolution of one of Norman Rockwell’s most fascinating illustrations, The Tattooist.

Rockwell often used photos as reference points for his paintings. For The Tattooist, Rockwell enlisted the help of a neighbor, Clarence Decker, to pose as the photo model for the sailor and artist Mead Schaeffer as the tattooist.

To insure that he was getting the details right, Rockwell obtained a tattoo machine from Al Neville who owned a tattoo parlor on New York City’s Bowery. Neville also served as a consultant on the painting.

The Tattooist appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post’s March 4, 1944 issue.

New ‘bug-eyed” trend alert? Artist Jessica Harrison sure thinks so with her sculptural video using real fly legs for eyelashes. Now where’s the centipede moustache?

Attention people of Earth and Southern California!

This Thursday marks the opening of How We Roll, a six-month exhibition on African-America’s contribution to surfing, skateboarding and rollerskating culture at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles.

Starting with the history of black surfing from the 17th and 18th century in Polynesia and Africa and on into the US, the exhibit rolls through the African-American surf-skateboard-rollerskate continuum featuring photos by Glen E. Friedman, Grant Brittain, Jim Goodrich, Lance Dawes, Atiba Jefferson, Neftalie and more. Spotlights include the legacy of pioneering black female pro skateboarder Stephanie Person and the way that skateboarding has cross-pollinated with black music formats like Afropunk, hip-hop, jazz and reggae.

Get a preview of what the exhibit looks like here.

Here’s a piece of the black skateboarding story on the East Coast from Jeremiah Alexis via Current TV
