The career of Nico, née Christa Päffgen, and what happened to her after she crossed paths with Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground, has certainly been well-documented (see at the bottom, Nico: Icon).  Less well-documented, though, are Nico’s “model” years, starting out in Berlin when she was all of 14.  The accompanying photos are just a few selected from the fine—and generous—set found here.

Ranging in date from ‘52-‘67, these shots certainly capture a more innocent time in Nico’s life.  I particularly like the ones below where Nico looks like she just stepped into a Godard film.  It’s somewhat incredible to think that the face in the above black-and-whites would later go on to sing this, and this, and especially this!

Skintight USA: For Superheroes and the men who love them

This is recent New York Times article is awesome for so many reasons. I used to live a block away from the Stonewall Bar for a number of years and I never saw a single superhero walking in or out of the place. Then again, Clark Kent could have changed into his Superman duds after he was amongst his super friends?

Dim lighting. Rendezvous-friendly nooks. Muscled bartenders. Pulsating dance music. At first glance, it could be any Saturday night in any gay bar in New York.

But then you notice, off to one corner, Superman flirting with Green Lantern. And there, across the room, someone in the form-fitting outfit of Black Adam, Captain Marvel’s foe, determinedly working the floor. In fact, there seems to be an inordinate number of men here tonight who look as if they have all but jumped from the pages of a comic book. And in some way, they have.

This is Skin Tight U.S.A., the occasional costume-fetish party held at the Stonewall Inn in the West Village, which draws a regular group of men (and their admirers) who enjoy a special kind of dress-up. Some wear heroic outfits; some, wrestling gear. The crowd can range from 25 people on an average night to 250 on a spectacular one. The common thread is that the muscle-cuddling garb often leaves little to the imagination.

“I was always attracted to the superhero physique,” said Matthew Levine, 31, who helped found the party in 2005 with Andrew Owen, 44, and who was one of the few participants willing to be named. The two become friends as, respectively, the graphic designer and Webmaster for Hard Comixxx, a predecessor of Skin Tight, once held at the Eagle bar in Chelsea. Mr. Levine is a big fan of the X-Men (who have a handful of gay characters) and the Transformers (all of whom seem straight) and has been reading comics since he was 8. “As I got older,” he said, “I realized, ‘Oh, this is why I admire the Grecian ideal of manhood and musculature.’

“If you’re going to show it, make sure it’s worth seeing.”  Thank you, internet, you’ve once again answered my prayers!  On my “Penis Pants Fridays,” no longer will I bend over, ashamed, for a can of baked beans at TJ’s!

The Backtacular Gluteal Cleft Shield, created by designer Kimberly Brewer, is a stylish cover that prevents any unfortunate butt-crack revelations.  Made of hypo-allergenic denim, and decorated with studs and rhinestones for added bling, the Backtacular Gluteal Cleft Shield is applied directly to the skin, and sits above the waistband protecting the wearer’s modesty and morals like a tiny, fashionable nun.

Be imageGordon Gekko for a day with Stuart Hughes’ Privé brick phone. From Engadget:

Stuart Hughes usually reserves its gold and diamonds for recent gadgets, but the fine purveyor of ridiculous excess has taken a slightly different approach with its latest offering: the $200,000+ Privé brick phone. In addition to a 22ct gold shell and a smattering of diamonds, this apparently functional phone packs a color screen and features like SMS support and, um… buttons. Limited to just ten but, amazingly, still in stock.

Thanks, Jesse Merlin!

Blarney’s Stoned: Dave Allen at Large; Alan Hawkshaw; plus Paco Rabanne

Above, the amazing opening credits for Dave Allen at Large, a show I absolutely loved when I was a kid. Almost unknown in this country, Dave Allen was an Irish raconteur, who did most of his extremely popular show each week sitting in a chair, smoking and drinking. He hated, I mean hated, religion and it gave his comedy a fantastic edge for the day. No popular American performer would have been able to get away with anything even remotely similar to what Dave Allen did. Allen was hardcore about his Atheism. Even George Carlin didn’t start taking on religion as hard as he did until late in his career. And Lenny Bruce never said religion was stupid, he just said it was corrupt.

Dave Allen said religion was stupid and he said it over and over again throughout the many years of his television career. For a while he was even banned from Irish TV. He was hardcore, Dave Allen.

But the song! What about that fucking groove? It’s a song called Blarney’s Stoned by Alan Hawkshaw, an appropriate title for a song for Dave Allen, to be sure.

A lot of Hankshaw’s best work ended up in commercial music libraries where it could be licensed for film, radio and television. The video below, which I saw on Lady Bunny’s blog today, is a clip of Paco Rabanne’s collection of 1969 from a German TV show.

According to the YouTube poster the music is from the library label KPM 1169 - ARP ODYSSEY and the title of the track is Transcendental Meditation:
