‘Russia’s Full of Queers’: free benefit album highlighting Russia’s new anti-LGBT laws

Compiled by friend of Dangerous Minds Elizabeth Veldon, and available as a free download from the net label Black Circle, Russia’s Full of Queers is a 29 track album designed to highlight the abuse of LGBT people’s rights currently being passed as law in several Russian cities. Elizabeth says:

This album is a response to proposed laws in Russia that would outlaw any discussion of homosexuality, bisexuality or transgenderism.

The artists involved gave their tracks free and in many cases produced work to a tight (24 hour) schedule.

There is a wide variety of styles here from Harsh Noise through weird Jazz Cut-Ups to Hip Hop and Ambient.

We only ask that you sign the online petition against these laws and pass the word on.

Alone our voices are tiny, when raised together we can change the world.

You can sign the petition here, and you can download Russia’s Full Of Queers here.

Michelle Bachmann - ‘Lyin’ Ass Bitch’

Much respect to The Roots’ Questlove for what has to be one of the best TV punkings of all time. When Michelle Bachman appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night, his band The Roots played the Fishbone track “Lyin’ Ass Bitch” as she stepped on stage (as NO-ONE applauded). We couldn’t think of a better song! Questlove has since been “grounded” by Fallon (whatever that means), but we wouldn’t worry too much about it - aside from all his excellent music work, this guarantees the guy legendary status.

Michelle Bachman’s entrance onto Jimmy Fallon:

Here’s Fishbone playing the original, live in Japan in 1987:

Lady Trololo: The female Eduard Khil

This is not quite as bizarrely infectious as Eduard Khil’s uber-meme “Trololo” but it has its moments.

The singer is French-born Russian superstar Edita Piekha. The video is from 1964.

Piekha is regarded as one of Russia’s first rock and rollers. She did stuff on stage that had been heretofore forbidden…like dancing the Twist. A Russian riot grrrl.

Monkee see, Monkee doo: Micky Dolenz as a glam rocker

Micky as David Bowie.

Micky Dolenz of The Monkees goes glam on The Greatest Golden Hits of The Monkees TV special in 1977.

I’m guessing this was intended as a joke. On the other hand, Dolenz directed the show and maybe just maybe this was his idea of a hip career move.

Micky, Marc Bolan wants his pants back.

Teenage beatnik: Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and Bob Dylan portrayed by a young girl

The Mad Ones: A Brief History Of The Beat Generation

This well-executed, smart, no-budget, D.I.Y. video was a school project created by Krystal Cannon who lives in Ithaca, New York. She portrays all of the characters in the film.

I particularly dig Cannon’s Bob Dylan and her Allen Ginsberg is a hoot.

Krystal, if you see this, how about posting a comment on the making of The Mad Ones.

When some magicians die, they vanish—their work done, their infernal ceremonies finished, their fire extinguished—leaving no traces behind. This was almost the case with self-styled high priest of rock magick, Geoffrey Crozier. Almost, I say, because some extraordinary documents of his short, turbulent time on this planet still remain. Dangerous Minds pal Otto von Ruggins is allowing us to showcase some of this rare and previously unseen material. If you are into vintage garage and punk rock insanity—like the MC5, New York Dolls or Alice Cooper, you know, the transgressively transcendent stuff that Julian Cope or Thurston Moore like—in all its mutant glory, then this post is for you.

Geoffrey Crozier was an enigmatic magician/rock performer from Australia who was a legend amongst New York City’s underground rock cognoscenti circa 1975-78. Crozier was the lead singer—you could also say lead shaman—of a rock group called Kongress whose other members at that time included pith helmet-wearing synth player Otto von Ruggins and nutzoid space rock No Wave madman VON LMO who beat the drums savagely, often with chains.

In the pages of The Village Voice, James Wolcott described a Kongress gig like so:

“A rowdy bottle smashing night…earlier in the evening there had been an altercation with a satanic occult band named Kongress that played music that sounded like a Concorde drone with Aleister Crowley lyrics. They abandoned the stage only after threats of violence were unfurled like vampirish cape flourishes.”

More Kongress after the jump, including insane live footage from Max’s Kansas City, Halloween of 1976 and 1977!

David Bowie on Dinah Shore’s talkshow, 1976

When David Bowie made his appearance on Dinah Shore’s daytime gabfest, Dinah! in 1976, I faked being sick that day so I could stay home from school. I recorded the audio of the program by holding my $30 cassette recorder against the TV speaker. To me, this was event television. Watching it on YouTube some 35 years later, I realized how much of the dialogue is still to this day etched in my memory. Ridiculous perhaps, but true. This was back when rock and roll could still change your life.

Dig what’s on offer here folks: The thin white duke in FINE FORM, taped in Los Angeles on January 3, 1976, right before Station to Station came out, and apparently when he was in his still in his phase of wearing only clothes sold at Sears & Roebuck. Bowie was on the show to promote his role in Nicolas Roeg’s film The Man Who Fell to Earth.

To say that Dinah, Henry Winker, Nancy Walker and the studio audience were treated to an amazing version of “Stay” during that taping is simply an understatement. Listen to this LOUD and enjoy it. For me, this is one of the very best of the very best moments of David Bowie performing on television throughout his entire career.

The whole interview is fun. Dinah Shore, the Oprah of the 70s, clearly enjoyed meeting Bowie (she invited him back).  I can’t embed the clips here, but you can watch it in three parts on YouTube (one, two, three). In the third segment, Natalie Cole, Candy Clark,  parapsychologist Dr Thelma Moss [side note: I made a Kirlian photography device for my 5th grade science fair after hearing her speak about it here] and believe it or not, Bowie’s Karate instructor, Wayne Vaughn join David, Nancy Walker, Dinah and the Fonz.

More, More, More: Disco singer/pornstar Andrea True, RIP

The news is just now starting to make its way around the ‘net two weeks after her death: the first porn-mainstream crossover performer, disco singer Andrea True (real name Andrea Truden), passed away on November 7th. True was best known for her worldwide disco smash “More, More, More” fronting her group, The Andrea True Connection. Allegedly, True had made a porno film in Jamaica and was paid in Jamaican money so she decided to hire out a studio and musicians for the day. “More, More, More” developed out of the demo she made that day.

The group was not a one-hit-wonder, however, as they scored follow-up hits “N.Y. You Got Me Dancing” in 1977 and “What’s Your Name, What’s Your Number” in 1978.

“More, More, More” can be heard in the TV commercials for Honey Bunches of Oats.

Andrea True was 68 and had been supporting herself as a psychic for several years..

A meme is born. Lieutenant John Pike is suddenly everywhere at once - waddling through time and space with his little red can of pepper-spray.

Ridicule can be an effective revolutionary tool. But the cops still have the firepower so we can’t stop taking them seriously. But for the time being, this is some hilarious shit.

More after the jump…
