The more things change, the more they stay the same. Linton Kwesi Johnson wrote “Fite Dem Back” in 1978.

“Writing is a political act and poetry is a cultural weapon.” Linton Kwesi Johnson.

Time magazine, of all places, has published a “Top 10 British Riot Songs of the Early ‘80s.” Check it out here. There’s a few smart choices, including “Fite Dem Back.”

Inga Rumpf: German rock goddess

Rising out of the ashes of Sixties folk band City Preachers, German-based band Frumpy formed in 1969 and over the course of their brief career released two albums of rock tinged with blues, jazz and psychedelic elements. They were for awhile Germany’s most popular rock band, selling out concerts and winning numerous awards. They eventually disbanded in 1972.

While Frumpy’s music is appealingly Uriah Heapish (yes I like Heep), it is their 22 year old lead singer, Inga Rumpf, that I find totally mesmerizing - a unique presence that evokes Nico, Janis Joplin and Robert Plant.

Having started singing in her teens with City Preachers, Inga went from Frumpy to greater success with prog-rockers Atlantis and ultimately to a solid solo career. She’s still gigging.

Here’s Frumpy performing in 1971, followed by a 1973 clip of Atlantis, in which Inga’s Janis Joplinesque bluesy side is in full blossom.

Evocative film footage of The Lower East Side in 1967

New York City’s Lower East Side filmed in 1967/68.

I visited the East Village in 1967 and when I moved there 10 years later not much had changed. The East Village, Tompkins Square and Alphabet City were in decay, whole areas were virtual urban wastelands. But, out of the ruins great things were rising in the arts and culture. During the mid-70s through the 1980s, the area was vibrant with a bohemian vibe. Then came gentrification and many of us were pushed out, along with the poor and elderly. The area is thriving now with fine restaurants, fashion boutiques and trendy bar after bar after bar. It’s still a wasteland - an expensive, well-maintained, cultural wasteland. Where once were bookstores, rock clubs and shops filled with hip affordable clothing there are now fast food chains, designer brand boutiques and banks popping up like a bad case of corporate herpes. Yes, I know I sound like a disgruntled ex-New Yorker. I am one.

The soundtrack is “All Tomorrow’s Parties” by The Velvet Underground.

Independent music distributor PIAS lose entire stock in London riots

Sad news for fans of independent and alternative music - among the worst hit in last night’s large scale rioting in London were the very popular independent distributor PIAS (né Play It Again Sam) who look to have lost all their stock when the Sony warehouse in Enfield was burnt down. If you are a fan or collector of independent music you probably have a couple of releases brought to you by the company already - they distribute labels like Mute, Rough Trade, One Little Indian, Warp, Ninja Tune, Kompakt, Domino, FatCat, Soul Jazz, Rock Action, Chemikal Undergroud, and lots lots more. It’s estimated that PIAS handle around 30% of independent music in Europe.

PIAS have issued this statement via their website:

There was a fire last night at the SonyDADC warehouse which services the physical distribution for [PIAS] in the UK and Ireland. [PIAS] is working closely with SonyDADC who are implementing their emergency plans. [PIAS]‘s UK offices in London and all other areas of our business are unaffected.
More information will be communicated shortly to all our labels and partners.

A campaign has already begun to help the company, with suggestions that records or downloads from PIAS distributed labels be bought today in solidarity. A Paypal account is also being set up by Twitter user fionchadd (hashtag #labellove) for people to donate money through, which will be distributed among the labels affected by the loss of stock.

Goofy, young Trent Reznor playing a Billy Idol song in an early 80s ‘New Wave’ cover band

Who’s this fresh-faced New Waver with the asymmetric poodle hairdo? (Hint: It’s not one of the Thompson Twins).

Nope, it’s future Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor back in the early 1980s playing and singing a cover of Billy Idol’s “Eyes Without a Face” with his Cleveland, OH band-mates in “The Urge.”

Both astonishing and completely ridiculous.

More baby-faced New Waver Trent Reznor after the jump!

Thank you kindly Michael Backes!

Psychedelic Sadhu: Go go Goa mix

For your listening and viewing pleasure, a mix of psychedelic tunes from France, India, Britain, Indonesia and The United States.

The mix concludes with two songs from one of my all-time favorite albums, “No Other” by Gene Clark. It’s a masterpiece that has been unheard by far too many people. I hope Clark’s songs included here will be a compelling introduction to those of you who haven’t heard the album and will seek it out. It’s really quite brilliant.

The visuals are comprised of excerpts from global experimental film makers, both contemporary and pioneers of early 20th century movie magic, including Larry Jordan, Jonas Mekas, Toshio Matsumoto, Segundo de Chomón and Maurice Lemaitre.

Songs:

“Aere Perennius” - Docdail
“Karye Pyar” - Nahid Akhtar
“Somebody’s Calling My Name” - Baby Grandmothers
“Don’t Let It Get You Down” - Shadrack Chameleon
“Pemain Bola” - Rasela
“Child Of Nature” - The Beatles
“Love’s The Thing” - Smoke Rings
“Didunia Yang Laing” - Ariesta Birawa Group
“Forge Your Own Chains” - D.R. Hooker
“Milkman” - Ema
“Written On The Forehead”- PJ Harvey
“That Shocking Day” - Ivo’s Group
“Who Can I Say You Are” - Morley Grey
“Heavy Head” - Little Sammy Gaha
“Strength Of Strings” - Gene Clark
“No Other”- Gene Clark

Seldom-seen David Bowie interview, 1976

David Bowie admirably keeps his cool in the face of TV host Russell Harty’s idiotic questions (asked via satellite) in a nearly futile effort to promote his then-upcoming 1976 “Isolar” world tour. In marked contrast to other TV appearances around this time, the thin white duke doesn’t seem to have snorted a pound of cocaine before the interview started…

Each time Bowie appeared on Russell Harty Plus in the 1970s, he was subjected to goading and borderline insults from the supercilious, patronizing Harty, who comes off here like a right prat. You have to wonder why he bothered. Bowie had then just finished his role in Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth, briefly touched on here.

Thank you, Adrian Legg!
