My brother and sisters in arms here at Dangerous Minds will probably exile me to a digital Siberia for posting a mashup, but this one really tickled my fancy. DJ Fanfaroff is a master of the form and continues to come up with inventive mixes.

‘I Am Here (A Love Letter From God)’ music video

As seen on the wonderful Christian Nightmares blog:

Brownson Music presents a video for ‘I Am Here (A Love Letter From God)’, one of the most bizarrely depressing Casio-driven Christian songs ever written (WARNING: This song will lodge itself in your brain like a tumor, and has the potential to bum you out for days!)

Here’s what the artists themselves had to say about their creation:

A song regarding hardships, sorrow and sadness through the loss of a job, finances, house or family member(s), spouse or a child and GOD letting us know that He is here to help us through anything life throws at us. This song also teaches us to put our faith, hope and trust in Him—the one who can carry the load for us and give us peace.

Uh, yeah, something like that!

Slow Children: Spring in Fialta

Frenzied New Wave synthpop duo, Slow Children (singer Pal Shazar and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Chinich) put out two albums of smart music in the early 80s, both produced by Jules Shear (Jules and the Polar Bears) and future Pet Shop Boys collaborator Stephen Hague, who also played on the records.

They had three minor hits, “President Am I?” (an early MTV favorite),“Vanessa Vacillating” and “Spring In Fialta” (with a title swiped from a Vladimir Nabokov short story). Like a lot of people who remember them, I was exposed to Slow Children via the $1.99 RCA New Wave sampler called Blits, which also contained songs by Bow Wow Wow, Sparks, Shock (who I wrote about here) and the Philip Glass-produced group, Polyrock.

Slow Children reformed in the spring of 2010.

Remember Remember: ‘Imagining Things’

Graeme Ronald is the talent behind Remember Remember, a Glasgow-based electronic group, who has produced some incredibly beautiful, lush and rather brilliant music over the past two years - think Brian Eno meets Philip Glass.

Remember Remember’s self-titled debut album is a must-have, and the group are now about to release an EP.

Due for release on November 1st, RR Scorpii contains 4 tracks recorded at Glasgow’s Green Door studios. In addition to their collage styled electronica, the band have borrowed from psychedelica and the instrumental landscapes of 70s rock.

Containing some typically intricate compositions, Remember Remember seem to have developed renewed confidence. The Glasgow based seven piece move from relatively lush soundscapes to the brittle guitar instrumental ‘Aria’ unveiling a number of new influences.

Ronald has an incredible CV, having been a member of such highly-praised bands as Multiplies, The Royal We and Sexy Kids, and touring guitarist with Mogwai.

This short film was made by Gregor Barclay to accompany Remember Remember’s Imagining Things, a track once deliciously described as a “mindgasm”.

The infamous photo was shot in 1966 by Jerry Schatzberg.

Kenneth Anger talks about working with Jimmy Page on the ‘Lucifer Rising’ Soundtrack

While the Kenneth Anger / Jimmy Page dustup has been reported ad nauseum, this clip is new to me.

Led Zeppelin guitarist and leader Jimmy Page has been fired as composer for the soundtrack of the film ‘Lucifer Rising’ by it’s director, Kenneth Anger. Speaking in London on Friday, Anger decried Page for time-wasting and a lack of dedication to the project, and claimed that Page’s personal problems had made him impossible to work with. Page has been working on the film for the past three years and has so far delivered some 28 minutes of completed tape. The story of the collaboration -and the ensuing rift- goes back to 1973 when Page first agreed to compose and perform the movie soundtrack. He and Anger first met at Sotheby’s, at an auction of boots by the English Occultist/Magician Aleister Crowley. Both Page and Anger are students of Crowley’s teachings. Anger is a practicing Magus (a priest/magician) and his films’of which ‘Scorpio Rising’ is perhaps the best known—- are replete with occult symbolism. Anger himself describes them as “Spells and Invocations”.

Irish Elvis impersonator James “The King” Brown does a sultry version of Nirvana’s ‘Come As You Are’. I was never a Nirvana fan, but I like this alot. Brown’s take on Nirvana was a hit in Europe back in 1999.

Ekkehard Ehlers Plays John Cassavetes (2001)

In 2001, Composer Ekkehard Ehlers released a series of singles wherein he plays, in the most tangential and opaque of ways, the work of another artist, in this case cinema genius John Cassavetes. See if you don’t recognize the extremely obvious source material and also see if you agree with me that it’s a gorgeous track in and of itself. Talk about yer cognitive dissonance !

Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips makes rock posters using his own blood as ink

The Flaming Lips were absolutely stunning this past weekend at their Austin City Limits Show, at moments reaching cosmic heights. Along with ACL performances by Muse and Sonic Youth, the Lips reminded me that the best rock and roll is passionate, magic and mystical. A welcome antidote to the blah shoegazing mope rock of the past couple of decades.

The Flaming Lips’ lead singer Wayne Coyne made limited edition posters for the Austin City Limits show using some of his own blood.

I visited The Liberace Museum in Vegas and loved it. Too bad it’s closing. Las Vegas is no longer the Vegas I dig.

For Immediate Release:
LIBERACE MUSEUM TO CLOSE ITS DOORS OCT. 17
Las Vegas – After 31 years of operation, the Liberace Museum will close its doors Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010 to focus its monetary contributions on the Liberace Foundation.

Due to the economic downturn and the decline in the number of visitors, the Museum is forced to close the space and focus primarily on its dedication to the Foundation and the donation of scholarships.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors, we feel it is important to close the Museum to ensure the future of the Liberace Foundation and to keep the legacy of Liberace alive through its continued scholarship program,” said Jeff Koep, chair of the Liberace Foundation. “Since the inception of the foundation 34 years ago, more than $6 million in scholarships have been awarded to 2,700 students, and we will continue to award scholarships to deserving individuals.”

The memorabilia at the Liberace Museum will be maintained. A national touring exhibit is planned, and details will be announced at a later time. The board will also continue to research options for a location change to make the Museum more accessible to potential patrons.

“The traveling exhibit is an exciting way to share the life and legacy of Liberace while providing an income stream for the Foundation,” said Koep. “In no way do we intend to close the doors and not continue to explore options that will allow us to reopen at a later date.”
