John Lennon and Yoko Ono on the Mike Douglas Show, 1972

For a week in February of 1972 John Lennon and Yoko Ono co-hosted the Mike Douglas Show and America was introduced to macrobiotics, experimental film, bio-feedback, Elephant’s Memory, Yippee prankster Jerry Rubin and Chuck Berry sitting yoga-style watching it all pass before his bemused eyes.

The footage of John and Yoko playing “Johnny B. Goode” and “Memphis” with Chuck Berry is all over YouTube. It’s not included here. The clips that I’m sharing have been less available ever since they went out of print. While not as musically historic as the footage of Berry and Lennon playing together, these conversations with John and Yoko are a charming and inspiring look at one of rock and roll’s great marriages. The love and respect between Lennon and Ono is palpable and you can feel the creative energy that is sparking between them. And their earnest enthusiasm in turning people on to new ways of treating their bodies and brains is testimony to John and Yoko’s continuing journey in raising consciousness, ours and theirs. Their message is refreshingly free of cynicism and rock star jadedness.

Mike Douglas seems genuinely engaged by John and Yoko.

We begin with day two of John and Yoko’s residency, February 16,1972.

Orson Welles’ creepy interview with Jim Henson and Frank Oz

Creepy is an understatement considering there’s a scene where Miss Piggy’s “lifeless” body is poked and prodded in a lake. Here’s little bit about the unaired pilot via Wikipedia:

The Orson Welles Show was an unsold television talk show pilot. It has never been broadcast or released. Filming began in September 1978 and the project was completed around February 1979. […] Welles interviewed Burt Reynolds (taking several questions from the audience,) Jim Henson and Frank Oz, and performed two magic tricks assisted by Angie Dickinson. Several of The Muppets were featured in taped segments, including Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo the Great and Animal.

Update: A Dangerous Minds reader points out the dead Muppet scenes are from a Late Night with Conan O’Brien sketch. Thanks for the heads-up, Meaning_of!

Inscrutable drunken hipster mayhem: The B.J. Rubin Show

From the darkest depths of hipster Brooklyn comes this head-scratcher of a faux-public access half hour by one B.J. Rubin and a gang of amiable hangers-on. Highlights include a seemingly endless stream of half-remembered old time-y piano tunes, an annoyingly circular and obsessive grade-school poetic remembrance, a live cat, and most notably, a 15 minute (!) drum performance by one Kevin Shea that may be one of the most relentlessly funny and potentially self-destructive things I’ve ever witnessed. Seriously, just go ahead and skip to around the 14 minute mark and marvel at the madness.

Thanks Cory Flanigan !

Johnny Thunders and Syl Sylvain interviewed by hipster swine on French TV

Johnny Thunders and Syl Sylvain on French TV in 1981.

Johnny is enjoying a cocktail while Syl miraculously makes a grand piano sound like an acoustic guitar.

Is it my imagination or is the French guy conducting the interview/interrogation acting like an arrogant prick? Johnny could care less, but I would have slapped the fucker for his snide remark about the NY Dolls and his “you drink too much” comment.

Rep. Donna F. Edwards of Maryland dropped some deep-cut White Stripes lyrics today on the House floor. Nicely done.

I’ve never been a huge fan of TWS but the original is pretty nifty sounding.

Thanks Ned Raggett !

No fun: Iggy Pop on American Idol

While Steven Tyler’s heart palpitates like a little bird in his chest and Jennifer Lopez does her best to keep her lunch down, Iggy Pop is the definition of self-parody as he lip syncs and flexes his stretch marks on American Idol.

Punk may not be dead but its varicose veins are showing.

Iggy, I still love you but I’m done defending you.

Thanks, I think, to Jack Sonni.

John Waters and Divine on a rarely seen episode of Andy Warhol’s TV show

John Waters and Divine appear on Andy Warhol’s cable TV show in 1981. The late Van Smith, make-up and costume designer on Waters’ films, is seen working on Ms. Divine during the interview.

The always amusing Waters talks about his early influences (Herschell Gordon Lewis), his film making style and screens some cool clips from his early movies.

John mentions his book Shock Value which was at the time about to be published. One of my favorite memories is the day that he and Divine signed my copy at a bookstore in Greenwich Village. Two of the classiest trash mavens I’d ever met.

This’ll start to make you feel really woozy by around the minute and a half mark if you can make it that far. Clearly, Giorgio Longdo is Canada’s Mario Lanza.

What’s that ? You need more ?
