Though they’ve been around for a few years now, the brilliantly named L.A.-based avant-techno performance troupe We Are the World are finally getting their due for the extreme creative energy they’ve put into their work. (Easiest to Google “we are the world”+heffington for obvious reasons…) Composer Robbie Williamson, singer Megan Gold, choreographer Ryan Heffington and lead dancer Nina McNeely have blended driving beats, incantory vocals and vexingly ritualized costumed choreography that evokes Talley Beatty‘s work in Maya Deren‘s legendary films. Though their somewhat naturalized tech aesthetic has been paralleled with that of Fever Ray, you’d be hard-pressed to say that you’ve seen anything quite like this.
