Imagine there’s no Mitch McConnell: Mean old Republican is going to get the snot kicked out of him

I almost always vote a straight Democratic ticket, but it has nothing whatsoever to do with my enthusiasm for the Democrats, and everything to do with how much I hate Republicans. I’m not a Democrat—I’m a socialist, I have no one to vote for—so please don’t mistake me for one. I just loathe Republicans, got it?

To use a sports analogy, President Obama is the leader of a team that I don’t really root for, but boy do I HATE the other team with a passion.

And of course, I live in a country where the game is ALWAYS on.

One of the senior members of the GOP who I find the most distasteful is Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Like me, many Americans also feel poorly about Kentucky’s most powerful “Yertle the Turtle” lookalike making him currently the most unpopular United States Senator. He’s a horrible spokesperson to articulate Republican talking points because he’s so very obviously such a mean old cuss (or does that make him the perfect GOP mouthpiece?)

Mitch McConnell’s days might be numbered. Challenged from the far right by Tea party-supported millionaire Matt Bevin (who hilariously thinks McConnell has been too wiling to compromise with Obama) McConnell should be bruised and punch-drunk after a primary battle… but have you seen the opening campaign salvo put together by his de facto Democrat challenger, Alison Lundergan Grimes? It’s well worth a look. It’s not only one of the finest examples of an “introducing the candidate” type video that I’ve yet seen—from a marketing standpoint it’s a 10/10—at the end of it, the candidate looks directly into the camera and fixes her gaze squarely at McConnell himself and basically tells that old man that she intends to beat the snot out of him.

It’s a bravura performance with Lundergan Grimes exhibiting so much more testosterone than McConnell himself is capable of generating these days. She’s itching to kick his pruny ass and her energy and conviction is palpable here, jumping right off the screen. If ever there was an “out with the old, in with the new” feeling to an electoral match-up—McConnell, 71, is the longest serving U.S. Senator in Kentucky history and Lundergan Grimes, the Secretary of State, is 34—this one is it. Let’s hope it’s extra humiliating for McConnell. May he flounder like a fish on a riverbank, just like all of the poor and working class people he’s hurt in the past few years, in his state and across America. I hope he gets creamed and I have the feeling that this young woman is going to hit McConnell like a bus. She’s already ahead in two polls. That’s never happened to him before. Not once.

Watch the video below and when it gets to the “This part’s for you, Senator McConnell,” imagine that you are Mitch McConnell watching and try to conjure up what went through through his mind as she throws down the “I’m gonna fuck you up” gauntlet so magnificently.

McConnell’s retort was the worst thing ever. It wasn’t funny. It didn’t even really make any sense. It sucked.

And then there was this endorsement for Alison Lundergan Grimes from none other than Bill Clinton, who won Kentucky twice. Notice how he doesn’t say “we,” he says “you,” meaning “It’s up to YOU, KENTUCKY to get rid of this knucklehead for the rest of us.” That was a pretty powerful way to phrase it I thought. Should he show up in Kentucky a few times to support Lundergan Grimes, it’ll get really good. There’s nothing better than a state race that becomes a national one, because they can turn on a dime and on so few votes. Such drama!

‘All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace’ Episode 1

The first episode in the new series by Adam Curtis, All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace is now available to watch in full on YouTube.

Starting by examining our current era of supposed economic, social and online freedoms, Curtis manages to join the dots between Ayn Rand, Alan Greenspan, the IMF’s involvement in East Asia, radical Islam and Silicon Valley’s economic boom. This episode features some very interesting and candid interviews with Rand confidants Nathaniel and Barbara Branden, Nathaniel having had an affair with Rand that lasted many years. Presented in the typical, excellent Adam Curtis style, using lots of obscure stock footage and a great soundtrack, this is essential viewing.

Episode two of All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace (“How The Idea Of The Ecosystem Was Invented”) is available to watch here.

Now that the whole Kanye-Gaga thing’s been derailed, I’ve got an open date on my “vulgar spectacle” calendar.  Maybe it’s just me, but when I first stumbled across these two grinning mugs, the closing lines of George Orwell’s Animal Farm came to mind: ?
