Hey, it’s a new video of psychedelic impressionism by my bro, Josh Laner for another song from my recent LP, Natural Selections. The song itself, entitled Brain is a collaboration with my long time friend, the wonderful Canadian singer/songwriter/producer Jordon Zadorozny. Stop, look and listen, won’t you ?

Hello, it’s the ninth episode of the Dangerous Minds Radio Hour. Allow, if you will, host Brad Laner access to your head space and be rewarded with as many indelible melodies, rhythms and sounds as can be crammed into one Earth hour. Today’s episode features a mini-tribute to the powerful, emotional music of Judee Sill (picture above). Her music is so significant to me, I can hardly muster the verbiage to describe it. Staggering stuff, if you’ve not yet heard it you’re in for a treat.

Crispy Ambulance - Deaf
Theatre Of Hate - Rebel Without A Brain
Marvin Gaye - Troubleman
Lady June (with Kevin Ayers and Brian Eno) - The Letter
Judee Sill - Jesus Was A Cross Maker
Judee Sill - The Kiss
Neil Young - Don’t Cry
The Roches - Hammond Song
Wigwam - Fairyport
Frank Zappa - It Just Might Be A One Shot Deal
Things to Come - Come Alive
Prince - New Position
Prince - I Wonder U
The Fiery Furnaces - Mason City

This, the fifth episode of the Dangerous Minds Radio Hour finds your host Brad Laner going it alone (Richard will return for the next episode) and delving into some expansive jams by some stalwart DM heros along with some recent discoveries. These are sounds for those of us who are unconcerned with filing our musical tastes within convenient corporate marketing categories and who hold music in too high esteem to assign it mere lifestyle accessory status. Hope you dig it.

Yes - “We Have Heaven”
Henry Cow - “Industry”
Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band - “Kandy Korn”
Gato Barbieri - “Antonios Das Mortes”
Junip - “Loops”
The Funkees - “Akula Owu Onyeara”
Michel Chion - “Dies Irae” (from Requiem)
The Beatles - “Revolution (take 20)”

I’ve spent so much time with this record already, I nearly forgot that this is the day it officially makes its way into the world. Be kind, world ! Actually folks have been extremely kind so far. Prefix mag via KCRW posted up a lovely piece yesterday and there’s a podcast with songs from my shady past and present as well as a pretty good and casual phone interview at Most People Are DJs. And of course, as you doubtless already know due to that flashing ad down there, you can buy your own CD or colored vinyl LP (see above) directly from my superb label, Hometapes.

Sayeth my fine imprint Hometapes:

Today is the first day of the rest of your summer. We’re giving you a free song to celebrate. A soundtrack to start your car to, to wring out your towel to, to take a walk to tonight. Brad Laner’s new album Natural Selections comes out August 24. The packaging is at the Hometapes house. The green vinyl is on the truck. I thought I couldn’t be hypnotized by this record any further, any deeper, but my heart just jumped, primally, with the first drum hit of “Eyes Close.” Damn, this is good. You can pre-order the record now and we’ll ship it out to you by, or likely before, that magical August day when Natural Selections belongs to everybody.

Aww, flattery will get you everywhere ! Please do make sure to download the mp3, especially if you grabbed the one from last week which was the wrong mix. oops !

I mentioned before about my new LP of experimental pop tunes, Natural Selections coming out on August 24th, remember ? Well now my fabulous associates at the Hometapes label have released another mp3 and lovely video for the lead-off track, created by my brother Josh in advance of that event. You’ll note the Los Angeles theme of the video which ties in neatly with my Bunker Hill post from yesterday. See how I did that?  I’ll be posting again about it all soon, tempting you with gorgeous product shots of the groovy swirly colored vinyl edition. Meantime, please enjoy a few minutes of my personal madness. Thank you.

My 80’s teen art rock band: Steaming Coils

I’m so flabbergasted that I found this fan-made video on the you-know-what for a song by a band I helmed as a teen in the 80’s, Steaming Coils, that I decided to share it here. Steaming Coils was essentially myself making the music and my good friend and lyrical genius David Chrisman singing. Over the years many other cool people did time in the band as well and we put out three LPs , a handful of cassettes and recorded hundreds more songs. ALL of which are available for free download at Mutant Sounds. I’m still really proud of what we did in Steaming Coils. As a rule, we over-extended our musical reach. We were listening to and worshipping really complex progressive and experimental music and wanted to play like our heroes but our skills were more at the budding punk-rock level and I think that’s what makes it interesting to hear now. The song in the video (which is pretty damn odd, but huge thanks to whomever created it !) is one of the last and best things we ever did, from our Breaded LP. Hope you enjoy it !

Steaming Coils - Never Creak LP (1986)
Steaming Coils - The Tarkington Table LP (1987)
Steaming Coils - Breaded LP (1989)
Steaming Coils - Archive (1983-1990)

Yes indeed, it’s time again for me to pimp some o’ my own wares here on the DM. The lovely and talented Hometapes imprint, the label which released my first solo LP, Neighbor Singing a few years back, has announced an August 24th release date for my latest psycho-delic art-rock LP entitled Natural Selections. That’s the cover image up there, a photo of my boss son, Julian who also sings a tune of his own creation on the LP. Have a listen to one of the cuts below if you wanna.

Hey that’s my name up there in pretty red letters ! Sorry for the self-indulgence so early in my tenure, but this here atheist Jew has composed and recorded a Christmas song for the 8 days of Hometapes event and today is my day. Hometapes is the fine and happening Portland-based label that released my 2007 solo debut LP, Neighbor Singing and is due to release my 2nd, Natural Selections some time next year.
