Another fantabulous Dangerous Minds Radio Hour from Nate Cimmino. These radio shows from this guy turn up here almost like an abandoned child left in a basket on our digital doorstep. Richard Metzger claims to have met Mr. Cimmino once, and not even in a past life. It’s disturbing, but they’re so good.

So, once again, Dangerous Minds invites you for another aural excursion with our host, Nate Cimmino, who as best we can tell is wandering around blissfully, sending this offering to us while he was on vacation.

Playlist:

02. Dusty Springfield- Spooky (mono 45 mix)
03. Carole Pope- All Touch/No Contact

As you will detect from his charming accent, DMRH debutant Steven Daly isn’t from around these parts: He’s from Glasgow, although these days he lives in New York’s allegedly fashionable outer borough of Brooklyn and works as a contributing editor for Vanity Fair magazine. Steven’s first tentative steps up the glass mountain we call show-business were as the drummer for Orange Juice, a band that is frequently accused of “inventing” indie-rock. Next week Orange Juice are nominated in the box-set category of the Mojo Awards in London, alongside the like of the Kinks, Eric Clapton and David Bowie. Good luck, Steve. Let us know how you get on against that competition!

Ian Dury and the Blockheads - There Ain’t Half Been Some Clever Bastards
The Boys - The First Time
Subway Sect - Nobody’s Scared
Nosmo King and the Javells - Goodbye Nothing to Say
Dexy’s Midnight Runners - I Love You
Holland-Dozier-Holland - Don’t Leave Me Starving for Your Love

Once again Dangerous Minds has digitized Nate Cimmino for your conspicuous consumption. Sounds kind of barbaric, doesn’t it? For the purpose of rumination, this offering was conceived in two parts. A special guest Dangerous Minds Radio Hour from the San Francisco band Lumerians.

Most of this set are vinyl rips we tracked the other night in Marc’s living room. The whisky was flowing free and so were we. This is real shit. We wanted to showcase our top favorites that we’ve been digging the past couple years as opposed to songs that are obscure for obscure’s sake. If folks get turned on to new music that’s definitely and added bonus. There is heavy San Francisco representation of bands old and new: Chrome, Magnetic Stripper and Bronze as well as a whirlwind trip through Latin America and Africa before returning to the English speaking world with a brief detour in lesser Korea. At the end you can hear Tyler actually breaking Marc’s record needle. Reentry burns every time.

01: Dick Hyman - “Topless Dancers of Corfu”
02: Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou - “Noude Ma Gnin Tche De Me”
03: Chrome - “Eyes in the Center”
04: Magnetic Stripper - “Extended Play”
05: Fabulous Diamonds -“Track 3”
06: Os Bongos - “Kazukata”
07: The Psychedelic Aliens - “Gbe Keke Wo Taoo”
08: Hydra - “Homem Com “H”
09: Sabu - “Choferito”
10: The Doves - “Mercury”
11: The Clean - “Point That Thing Somewhere Else”
12: Wire - “On Returning”
13: Bronze - “Parallels”
14: Teeth Mountain - “Soft Beast”
15: Jorge Ben - “Errare Humanum Est”
16: Shin Jung Hyun and the Men - “Twilight”
17: Dick Hyman - “The Minotaur”

Climb on and join your tour guide and now regular tri-weekly host Nate Cimmino for another virtual journey from point A to point B, where ever that is for you.

Or to quote Mel Lyman:

This is CONTEMPORARY music. In this new age whose keynote is the destruction of old forms and the birth of new spirit our ears are still constantly insulted with the musical establishment’s attempts to “hold on” to the old traditions whatever the cost.

Or to quote a myriad of different people, “It seems like a nice way to spend an hour.”

What is the through-line in this batch of tunes I’ve selected to present to you, the discerning Dangerous Minds consumer? Perhaps it’s what Brian Eno refers to as idiot glee. At least that’s the emotional state that these songs tend to evoke in yours truly. That is until the last few tracks when my stock-in-trade taste for melancholic melody and downer sentiment kicks in. Whatever, hope you enjoy being inside my head for an hour. It’s a weird place to be.

Don Van Vliet - What Are We Gonna Do With You ?
Wild Kingdom - Roma-Destiny
Shoukichi Kina - Haisai Ojisan
Rick Grossman - Mellow Heaven Clout
Bobby Brown - Hawaii Nei I’ll Miss You
Lila Downs - Pinotepa
Albert Ayler & Don Cherry - Ghosts
Aksak Maboul - A Modern Lesson
Can - Turtles Have Short Legs (original 7” version)
Vogel - Flaschenzug
Eno (with The Winkies) - Totalled (I’ll Come Running)
The Van Dyke Parks - Do Want You Wanta
T2 - J.L.T.
Toru Takemitsu - Sky, Horse and Death

Serious video bonus: The internet debut of the only video footage of the band Wild Kingdom that I know of from my personal collection of New Wave Theatre episodes. I’m truly hoping a member or two of this band will turn up and tell me where the other recordings are (or at least what the incredible drummer ended up doing!)

Dangerous Minds has the antidote for the post-Christmas delirium that sets in right about now, and that is the realization that someone is always worse off than you. Our guest host Nate Cimmino has had to have his house filled with piles of records since just after dirt was invented, leaving precious room for little else. He collects this stuff and the useless facts that go with it so you don’t have to. You can take solace in that. Nate was a NYC club DJ in the late ‘70s through mid ‘80s, and has had his share of fun.

Dangerous Minds Radio Hour episode 11: Xmas Chaos with guest host Rick Potts

image

Hey kids, it’s a special Xmas edition of the Dangerous Minds Radio Hour with guest host Rick Potts !
