Einstein on the Beach: Philip Glass goes Lego

Chuck Close’s anamorphic portrait of Philip Glass.

Tara has some pretty hard and fast rules for this blog. Decrees like “IT’S GOTTA BE DANGEROUS”;  “THIS IS ON EVERY OTHER BLOG, I’M PULLING THIS POST” and of course, her classic commandment: “NO LEGO” are now legendary… around my house at least…

I’d argue that this piece is a (perhaps admittedly rare) exception on the Lego front. It’s a animated Lego version of Philip Glass’s minimalist opera, Einstein on the Beach. I think even my Lego-hating editrix wife might like this one. Plus it’s “dangerous” (Philip Glass is no MC Hammer!) and I haven’t found it on a ton of other blogs. She’s still sleeping, so if this post vanishes soon, you’ll know what happened!

Incidentally, the person who made this, did it to help a friend pass a high school art class! As one of the commenters on YouTube asked “What’s next a Lego Koyaanisqatsi?” Fingers crossed.

Hard to believe that Uwe Boll could descend any lower into the cinematic septic tank, but the motherfucker continues to amaze. Auschwitz porn. Ilsa, she wolf of the SS, already plumbed these depths 40 years ago.

New employment opportunities for Little People or dwarf exploitation?

Ad agency Ogilvy and Mather created this campaign to promote Iodex backache balm. Dwarfs wearing t-shirts with a Iodex bottle image and the line “Need help to get to the lower shelf?” assisted shoppers who had problems bending over to grab merchandise.

Ogilvy and Mather’s press release:

To create awareness that Iodex is a backache specialist balm in a memorable way, we launched a supermarket on-ground promotion/activation with the help of Little People (dwarfs), who wore T-shirts and distributed leaflets informing customers to ask for help if they found it difficult to bend down and reach for items on the lower shelves. Shoppers suffering from backache welcomed the assistance offered by the Iodex team.

Rick Santorum’s Anal Sex Problem

So much poetic justice in the world of far Right fucktards today, isn’t there? First the good news about anti-Islamic hate blogger Pamela Geller getting served with a well-deserved lawsuit alleging character defamation, then this hilarious news about Republican idiot Rick Santorum’s problem with… his Google ranking.  You see, if you google Santorum’s name (go ahead, try it) you won’t get to his official website, instead you’ll get to SpreadingSantorum.com, which explains, according to Mother Jones magazine, “that Santorum’s last name is a sexual neologism for “the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex.”

Santorum’s problem got its start back in 2003, when the then-senator from Pennsylvania compared homosexuality to bestiality and pedophilia, saying the “definition of marriage” has never included “man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be.” The ensuing controversy prompted syndicated sex columnist Dan Savage, who’s gay, to start a contest, soliciting reader suggestions for slang terms to “memorialize the scandal.” The winner came up with the “frothy mixture” idea, Savage launched a website, and a meme was born. Even though mainstream news outlets would never link to it, Savage’s site rose in the Google rankings, thanks in part to bloggers who posted Santorum-related news on the site or linked to it from their blogs. Eventually it eclipsed Santorum’s own campaign site in search results; some observers even suggested it may have contributed to Santorum’s crushing 18-point defeat in his 2006 campaign against Bob Casey

.

Bad luck for Santorum, who seems to be making plans to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012 (dream on buddy), here’s another link to SpeadingSantorum.com. Please help spread around a lil’ more Santorum yourself, won’t you, by posting this to your Facebook page and Twitter?

TVs anti-Muslim hate lady sued for $10 million by lawyer she defamed by calling him a ‘terrorist’

image

Every time I see psychotic, hate-filled anti-Islamic blogger/lunatic Pamela Geller on television I just want to throw up. I find her completely hideous, intellectually vacant, dishonest, and just… fucking repulsive. Yuck. She’s so ugly that seeing her practically ruins my day.

I expect to see the likes of Pamela Geller on Sean Hannity’s program or talking with a simpleton like Mike Huckabee on Fox News, but when she turns up on CNN or the NBC Nightly News, it confers a social legitimacy and integrity on this dangerously anti-social woman who deserves neither. It’s a disgrace to see her anywhere but Fox News. A year ago, Pamela Geller would have been viewed as—and treated like—a skinhead by the legitimate media (i.e. kept at a distance; not “endorsed”) if they’d have talked to her at all. Now the woman who wrote shit like this is ready for fucking prime time? I don’ t think so!

Let’s understand this. CNN won’t touch the birth certificate issue, the Rezko/Auchi corruption, Obama’s anti-semitism, his ACORN/SEIU ties and corruption, and other legitimate stories that need investigation. But they write fiction about Palin. Daily. So why not tell the truth about Obama and his reported strange sexual predilections? My question is, it is well known that Obama allegedly was involved with a crack whore in his youth. Very seedy stuff. Why aren’t they pursuing that story? Find the ho, give her a show! Obama allegedly trafficked in some very deviant practices. Where’s the investigation?

[Geller on Obama’s college trip to Pakistan:] “Back in the early 80’s, there were only two reasons to travel to Pakistan. Jihad or drugs. I think he went for the drugs and came back with jihad.”

Why the hell would anyone with half a brain pay attention to this woman? Here’s a compendium of crazy shit she’s said (like nuking Mecca, Medina, and Tehran) and a Media Matters plea to the media to ostracize this nutball instead of treating her as a credible source.

But there is a little sunshine today, as this hateful harpie is being sued for defamation of character by an attorney named Omar Tarazi. Tarazi represented the parents of Rifqa Bary, a Muslim teenager who, in the words of Little Green Footballs’ Charles Johnson, “converted to Christianity, ran away from home, and found a new home with a radical fundamentalist Christian preacher, Blake Lorenz of the “Global Revolution Church.”

Geller called Tarazi, the lawyer for the parents, a terrorist and claimed he had ties to criminal organizations. Defamation of character suits are often very, very difficult to bring to trial, but perhaps not in this case considering all the demonstrably false and crazy things Geller said about the attorney. Certainly it can be argued that Geller’s misinformed statements of dubious “fact” have had a negative effect on Mr. Tarazi’s professional reputation, community standing and probably his income.

Defamation of character suits can cause the defendant to lose an awful lot of money. This particular flavor of torture—financial—is the entire point, so one way or the other, the party bringing the suit, provided they’ve got a case. is usually the winner, judgement or not. I’m pretty sure looking at this story, that he’s got enough to bring this to a trial and that would be a very difficult situation for Geller to be in. Fucking with a lawyer is probably a bad idea, no matter how you slice it, but in this case, I think she’s really stepped in it. What did Geller expect by putting out so much hateful energy into everyone’s lives? It’s coming back to haunt her. Pamela, baby, may you reap what you sow and—truly, I mean this, girl—get exactly what you deserve:

A Muslim attorney on one side of the Rifqa Bary dispute has filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against Orlando attorney John Stemberger, an activist Christian attorney who worked for the other side.

The suit was filed by Omar Tarazi in federal court in Columbus, Ohio, Friday. It names John Stemberger of the conservative Florida Family Policy Council.

Also being sued is a blogger from elsewhere, Pamela Oshry, who writes under the name Pamela Geller at the website atlasshrugged2000 and penned scathing anti-Muslim posts after Rifqa ran away from home in July 2009, saying she was afraid her Muslim parents would kill her for converting to Christianity. …

In the suit, Tarazi accuses Stemberger of falsely claiming on Fox News that Tarazi was associated with a Columbus-area mosque that had ties to terrorists. It also says Stemberger defamed Tarazi by saying Rifqa’s parents fired qualified court-appointed Ohio attorneys to use only one – Tarazi – who was paid by a pro-Muslim group in Ohio, the Council on American-Islamic Relations or CAIR.

Tarazi was paid by no one, according to the suit. …

Oshry [Geller] published web posts that falsely said Tarazi had joined Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist organization, and received payments from ” ‘criminal’ organizations with ‘ties’ to terrorists,” according to the suit.

Geller’s co-defendant, Christian lawyer John Stemberger, is apparently under investigation by the Florida Bar for possible ethics violations by him for statements he made during the Rifiqa Bary case.

You piss in the wind, it comes back to hit you in the face.

Two magical short films from 1907 created by special effects pioneer Segundo de Chomon

Les Kiriki: Acrobates Japonais, directed by Segundo de Chomon in 1907, is a lovingly hand-tinted artifact from the early days of French cinema. Similar in technique to George Melies, Aragonese film maker Chomon was a pioneer of cinematic special effects. In Les Kiriki, Chomon creates the illusion of complex, gravity defying acrobatics by having dancers lay on a black floor and filming them from above. The feat, while not as miraculous as if they were actually standing upright performing the balancing act, is still imaginatively choreographed, requiring considerable skill. The use of absurd Japanese wigs, pulsing colors and the primitive set result in a witty and surreal little film. For the soundtrack I added The Ventures’ “Let There Be Drums.”

The second video is Chomon’s Le Spectre Rouge which was also made in 1907 but released in 1908. Music by Shpongle.

Blade Runner revisited

Blade Runner revisited by François Vautier. From the artist’s statement:

An experimental film in tribute to Ridley Scott’s legendary film “Blade Runner” (1982)
This film was made as a unique picture with a resolution of 60.000 x 60.000 pixels (3.6 gigapixels)
It was made with 167,819 frames from ‘Blade Runner’.

1>first step : the “picture” of the film
I extracted the 167,819 frames from ‘Blade Runner’ (final cut version,1h51mn52s19i)
then I assembled all these images to obtain one gigantic image of colossal dimensions : a square of approximately 60,000 pixels on one side alone, 3.5 gigapixels (3500 million pixels)

2> second step : an illusion
I placed a virtual camera above this big picture. So what you see is like an illusion, because contrary to appearances there is only one image. It is in fact the relative movement of the virtual camera flying over this massive image which creates the animated film, like a film in front of a projector.

Early David Bowie video: Ching-A-Ling (1969)

Early David Bowie music video for “Ching-A-Ling” taken from the Love You till Tuesday promotional film. Made in 1969, but unreleased until 1984, this film also features Hermione Farthingale (Space Oddity’s painfully intimate love-song “Letter to Hermione” was for her, obviously) and his friend Jono “Hutch” Hutchinson. The trio performed under the name “The Feathers.” The filming for Love You till Tuesday would be the last time Bowie and Farthingdale would see ever each other.

Note that Bowie is wearing a wig: He’d had to cut his hair for a role in a film called The Virgin Soldiers. “Ching-A-Ling” was recorded on the sly at Trident Studios by famed producer Tony Visconti in 1968. The harmonies would be revisited on The Man Who Sold the World’s “Savior Machine.”

After the jump, another early Bowie video for “Sell Me a Coat.”

Captain Beefheart Trout Mask Replica house still for sale

I’m going through one of my periodic Captain Beefheart obsessions, mostly due to being immersed in John “Drumbo” French’s harrowing memoir. It’s always been a point of pride for me as a life long denizen of the San Fernando Valley that much of Beefheart’s history took place here, so in planning a pilgrimage to the Woodland Hills house where the Trout Mask Replica LP came tortuously into being, I happened to notice the place is still on the market for a much reduced 325k. Mind you in 2006 it was going for 849k ! Hard to believe a Matt Groening or a Julian Schnabel hasn’t snatched it up yet !
