German blogger sued for linking to an image of Jesus with a ‘penis’

This is rather peculiar, don’t you think? A blogger in Germany posted the following:

I received mail today by the State Office of Criminal Investigation regarding an illustration of Jesus Christ on twitpic I linked to several weeks ago. I am accused of profanity.

Interestingly, the picture was taken in the Church of Warr Acres and is not photoshopped. Just recently it ignited a debate about the phallic depiction of the abdominal muscles.

I do not envy the police. And I do not think that the complaint was religiously motivated, but if it was, I do not consider it to be very Christian.

How can he get in trouble for THIS? It’s not photoshopped, even. Besides that, well, the historical Jesus WOULD have had a dick anyway , so where’s the beef? (Maybe there is a better way to put that…)

Johnny Cash: White pills, red pills, everybody’s a nut

‘The One On The Right Is On The Left’ appeared on Johnny Cash’s Everybody Loves A Nut album released in 1965. The lyrics by Jack Clement are deftly written and witty, but a load of bullshit. In an attempt to trivialize sixties protest music the message of the song, and the album as a whole, discounts the political roots of folk music. The song suggests that folk music is simply a style of music when it was actually much more than that. It was the music of the people (folks) and it spoke to real issues and feelings. Cash’s pandering to right wing, beatnik-hating rednecks was not one of his brighter moments. Cash’s tune would change with time.

But, it’s not the music that I find compelling in Johnny’s performance, it’s the way he looks and moves. The footage was shot during Cash’s Benzedrine years and he appears wired: tight-jawed and jumpy. His face is skeletal and his eyes seem haunted, distracted, frightened. I see a little bit of death in this video.

How well I have learned that there is no fence to sit on between heaven and hell. There is a deep, wide gulf, a chasm, and in that chasm is no place for any man.

Madlib comes out with his own brand of designer espresso

According to XLR8R, Dangerous Minds pal Madlib has come out with his own brand of designer espresso:

OK, we know the dudes at Stones Throw like to get creative with their merchandise, but this might be a hip-hop first. Madlib and Intelligensia Coffee are teaming up to make a custom espresso blend inspired by the Beat Konducta. The limited-run blend is being debuted tonight at the cafe’s Pasadena location, and Intelligensia is calling the product “a syrupy, sweet offering that has kept (Madlib) awake long enough to average an album-per-day over the past three years.” We can’t vouch for the taste, but we’re certainly intrigued, and more importantly, we’re wondering how Diddy or Jay-Z did not come up with this first. Apparently, the hip-hop underground is leading the way in both beatmaking and brand-building.

I hear it goes well with this.

Update: Tara has had some. She describes it as “like crack.”

Nicolas Roeg “shatters reality into a thousand pieces”—and turns 81!

Since we at Dangerous Minds have previously found ourselves marveling at his film Performance, it only makes sense to salute the wonderful English filmmaker Nicolas Roeg on this, his 81st birthday.

Check out Steve Rose’s great interview in the Guardian with the oft-aloof and prickly director (from which I paraphrase this post’s title), and for heaven’s sake check out the man’s films. He’s currently working on a screen adaptation of Martin Amis’s book Night Train.

Here’s a cool overview, with five themes spotlighted, by the excellent film video-essayist Hugo Redrose.

In the first half of this video mix, Elvis sings the sultry tune “Crawfish” (written by Ben Weisman and Fred Wise) from the movie King Creole. Part two is Johnny Thunders and Snatch’s Patti Palladin doing their take on the song. Both versions are ultra-groovy and share a similarly soulful vibe. Elvis got out of New Orleans alive, Johnny did not.

Billboard coupons: visual pollution that earns you beer money

James Ready Beer has created one very cool ad campaign. In an effort to save their customers money so they can afford to buy more James Ready Beer the brewery created billboard coupons.

By partnering with local retailers, we created a program that allowed people to take a picture of our billboard, show the picture to the corresponding retailer and receive savings on selected products and services. Saving money meant more beer money.

Cathode ray rock & roll apocalypse: Crosby,Stills, Nash and Young meet The Queen Haters

The Gerry Todd Show and Mel’s Rock Pile were the gold standard of rock and roll television. Here’s a rare performance of the reunited Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young on the Todd show followed by the only television appearance of the shortlived The Queen Haters on Rock Pile.

Gerry Todd was the proto videophile nerd and the CSNY clip may be the first video mashup.

The Queen Haters only television appearance and a bonus video after the jump…

A man, a pole and a whole lot of skill - so simple and yet so dramatic.

The Indian sport of mallakhamb originated in India in the 12th century. The word “malla” means wrestler and “khamb” means pole. This old art had almost been lost throughout the centuries but it’s become increasingly popular in recent years. Mallakhamb is often undertaken by blind or partially blind athletes because the art involves feeling, strength and balance and is not dependent on perfect eyesight. The connection to yoga is obvious - sport as meditation.

More mallakhamb after the jump…
