Scooby Doo meets ‘Twin Peaks’ (This is a real episode, not a mash-up)

The eleventh incarnation of Hanna-Barbera’s Scooby-Doo cartoon was called Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated! which ran on the Cartoon Network from 2010 until earlier this month.

According to Wikipedia, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated! was ‘dark,’ paying homage to the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street, the Saw franchise, David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, and the eldritch horror of H.P. Lovecraft.

In particular, in the second season, the central story arc of the show evolves to heavily feature the use of Babylonian mythology, exploring the Anunnaki, the Babylonian and modern pseudo-scientific concepts of Nibiru, and the writings of Zecharia Sitchin.

Fun fact: Actor Michael J. Anderson (little dancing man) lent his voice for these Scooby-licious episodes.

Below, Scooy-Doo and friends get all Peaked-out:

Via Lynch Net:

The Recipe

8 inch Crust: 1-1/2 c. flour, 1/2 c. Crisco, 1/4 c. ice water

Mix flour and Crisco with fork. Add ice water. Mix with your hands. When blended, roll into ball and refrigerate overnight. To roll out: flour both rolling pin and flat surface, split ball in two, roll out 1/2 to fit pan and 1/2 for lattice.

Filling: 3 c. cherries (pitted, sour frozen); 1 c. water; 1c. Baker’s sugar; 4 T. cornstarch; 1/8 t. salt

Thaw cherries at room temp and strain (yields 2 c. juice). Taste for sweetness, more/less sugar may be needed. Add 1 c. water to make 3 c. juice (reserve 1 c. juice for cornstarch mix). Dissolve cornstarch in 1 c. juice, stir with whip. Combine 2 c. juice, 2/3 c. sugar, salt, and bring to a boil. Add cornstarch mix, cook until clear, about 5 min. (if cooked to long, syrup gets gummy). Remove from heat, stir in 1/3 c. sugar (blend thoroughly). Pour mixture over cherries, fold with wooden spoon, cool (stir mix while cooling to prevent scum from forming on top). Pour mix in pie shell. Top completed pie with lattice crust.

Bake @ 425 degrees for 35-40 min.

The Black Lodge ‘Twin Peaks’ bobble hat

Okay, I have to admit, this is pretty funny and WANT-worthy, right?

May I present to you the Black Lodge hat by Connoisseur:

imageWell, as we are now in the fifth year of the cult Weir hat our creative juices keep on flowing, this year sees two special editions inspired by two of Hollywood’s great cults. David Lynch’s Twin Peaks is the inspiration behind this one. Based on the extradimensional ‘Red Room’ from the cult TV series and accompanying film Fire Walk With Me.

We’re proud to present the Black Lodge hat.

I think you might have to actually be standing in a room of red curtains for anyone to get it, but I still like it.

You can pre-order the knit cap here for £27.00.

‘Twin Peaks’ in Red Vines® by Jason Mecier

Endlessly creative artist collage/mosaic artist Jason Mecier’s new exhibit “Licorice Flix, Edible Movie Mosaics” also features portraits of Harry Potter, Willy Wonka, ET, Elizabeth Berkley in Show Girls and Freddy Krueger rendered in Red Vines®. As usual, they’re pretty amazing.

Appropriately, there is a portrait of Charlie Chaplin included. It’s a little-known fact that the shoe the Little Tramp boils and eats in The Gold Rush was made of licorice by the American Licorice Company, the same company who make Red Vines® (and who are sponsoring the art show).

The show is opening at the IAm8Bit Gallery at 2147 W. Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles, with a reception for the artist on November 4 from 7-10 PM.

For all you die-hard Twin Peaks and retro game lovers out there, Jak Locke created this free Black Lodge Atari 2600-style action game for PCs and Macs. According to all the comments I’ve been reading about this game, it’s damn hard to beat:

A day in the FBI was never like this before! You are Special Agent Dale Cooper and you’ve found yourself trapped inside of the Black Lodge, a surreal and dangerous place between worlds.

Try as you might, you can’t seem to find anything but the same room and hallway no matter which way you turn. Worse yet, your doppelganger is in hot pursuit! You have no choice but to keep running through the room and hallway (or is it more than one?) and above all else, don’t let your doppelganger touch you! Your extensive physical training in the FBI will provide you a seemingly limitless supply of energy to run as long as necessary, but running out of breath is the least of your worries!

You’ll find quickly that you’re not alone in the Black Lodge, though your friends are few and far between. Not only that, the lodge itself seems to be actively trying to trip you up at all times! You’ll be dodging chairs and crazed Lodge residents all while trying to keep your own insanity. How long can this go on?

No time to think of that now -here comes that doppelganger again. Just keep on running through the curtains or it will surely be curtains for you!

Go here and scroll to the bottom to download the game for your PC or Mac.

Here’s a fantastic artifact of one of the best shows ever to grace broadcast TV that I remember seeing back in the day but for some reason never picked up. Being ostensibly the tapes we saw Agent Cooper constantly making for his unseen assistant, Diane, quite a bit of this seems to have been created just for this release while other sections could have been lifted straight from the show. In any case it’s a big bundle of vintage and lesser-known Lynch-ian goodness. Below is most of the cassette in Youtube form. Follow the link at the bottom to get the entire thing.

David Lynch’s On The Air

How did David Lynch and Mark Frost capitalize on the zeitgeisty momentum sparked by Twin Peaks?  With 1992’s On The Air, an unlikely mash-up of, well, Happy Days and 30 Rock.  From its Wiki entry: “The program followed the antics of the staff of a fictional 1950s television network (Zoblotnick Broadcasting Company or ZBC), as they tried to put on a live variety program called ‘The Lester Guy Show’ with disastrous results.”

I loved it.  America did not.  ABC took On The Air off the air after airing only 3 of its 7 filmed episodes.  Why not decide for yourself, and watch some of it below?  If you like what you see, you can, for now, find a whole lot more of it here.
