Turkish parliament, fighting over a security bill.

One of the fun parts about living in a (sort of) democracy is transparency (at least, ostensibly). Governments like to make overtures to the people, meaning there is the promise that you may witness legitimate battles of power between politicians and representatives. In America, this means a lot of sniping, bitching, disingenuous rhetoric and sometimes maybe a little yelling. In other countries, this can mean actual fighting.

Below is a series of shots from recent Skirmishes between lawmakers from various countries. I’m not going to say it’s a better way to do politics—Ukraine apparently does this a lot, and they don’t really seem to have their shit together—but there’s something refreshing about this kind of legitimate passion. Part of me suspects that this doesn’t happen in America because most politics are actually done behind closed doors, between politicians and private interests.

Then again, you’ve got Rob Ford who just blindly stampeded a woman to go after hecklers. Ignoble of course, but more interesting than C-SPAN!

Controversial male political figures reimagined as fabulous drag queens

“Behind every ‘great’ man, there’s a queen.” That’s the insight that “Saint Hoax” hit upon after seeing a drag show for the first time and contemplating the similarly “constructed” nature of drag queens and incredibly powerful political figures:

The recipe for an iconic queen:

1. Flamboyant name
2. Fierce persona
3. Defining outfits
4. Personalized hairdo
5. A trademark feature
6. One hell of a PR team

I then realized that it takes that same exact effort to make a leader.

The text continues: “Like drag queens, political/religious leaders are expected to entertain, perform and occasionally lip-sync a public speech. ... But unlike drag queens, the fame hungry leaders don’t know when to take their costumes off.”

At the Saint Hoax website you can see the full transformations.

NYC Mayor Bloomberg discovers root of chronic homelessness: cushy, inviting shelters

For the latest in totally out-of-touch bazillionaire rich people ragebait news, renowned altruist Mayor Michael Bloomberg is struggling to back-track after commenting last week that NYC homeless shelters had become a “much more pleasurable experience,” and therefor did not properly incentivize the homeless to make use of their frayed bootstraps.

Bloomberg notoriously gutted aid to homeless and housing programs last year, citing budgetary constraints. Now I’m no fancy-pants big-city economist, but Bloomberg is worth somewhere between $22 and 25 billion dollars (but really, who’s counting?), and there are over 44,000 homeless people on record in New York (about 18,600 of them are children); maybe he could just, I don’t know, use some of his own money for those programs? He wouldn’t even miss it. Or maybe we could all storm his penthouse and dangle him over the Gowanus Canal? Naw, let’s go ahead and keep setting records for the highest rate of child homelessness in NYC since The Great Depression.

In his defense, he did just ban the sale of sodas over 16 ounces so us dumb poors don’t high fructose corn syrup ourselves to death. So really, he’s got our best interests at heart, right?
