For your weekend viewing pleasure…here’s an exciting find that has yet to materialize on YouTube: Crass: There Is No Authority But Yourself.  Director Alexander Oey‘s hour-long look at the relentlessly uncompromising anarchist punk band came out in ‘06, and features some great, talking head footage of Crass members Steve Ignorant, Penny Rimbaud and Gee Vaucher.

While The Feeding of the 5000 came out way back in ‘78, Rimbaud and Vaucher still remain true to the “Crass ideal.”  They continue to practice a sustainable, anti-corporate lifestyle at Dial House, a “safe haven for those individuals of principle who still live by the old punk slogan ‘Do it yourself.’

I remember a time when the procuring of a new Crass single was a matter of great urgency.  Watch below to find out why.

Create a universe while listening to Cosmogramma

Los Angeles beat wizard Flying Lotus, Steven Ellison by day, unveiled his latest offering Cosmogramma this past Tuesday on Warp Records, and both the buzz and the acclaim are still ringing ears.  The sound of 2010 machinery reaching for ancient and timeless free music forms, the album is Ellison’s third and definitely his most expansive.  Below is personal favorite Mmmhmm featuring bass virtuoso Thundercat on vocals.

As if creating a 2010 musical highlight is not enough, Lotus also debuted a “free augmented reality application” called Fieldlines to celebrate the release.  Developed by Aaron Meyers based on the album’s original artwork by Leigh McCloskey, Fieldlines allows you to move planets and create a new universe with the touch of a mouse.  All to the sounds of Flying Lotus and harp player extraordinaire, Rebekah Raff.  If you are in the Los Angeles area, not one but two record release parties are happening at the Echo Plex in Echo Park Friday May 14 and Saturday May 15.  Both are not to be missed!

The reticent soul of Talk Talk

I assume everyone here already recognizes the near-holy genius of late period Talk Talk, right ? O.K., good. Here then are both sides of the I Believe in You single (most certainly the last one they ever promoted with TV appearances) from the mighty Spirit of Eden LP (1988). An exercise in sensual ascetic reticence with brief explosions of un-checked emotion as well as a brave left turn down a dark corner for this one time shiny (but excellent) pop band. I honestly can’t express how much I truly love this music.

No wonder she left him!.

UPDATE: In the comments, deighv heart says:

this is good, but its nothing compared to the citizen kane of sucking which is roye’l’s “in my world”. its awesome on so many levels.

1. the outfit: vest sans shirt, tacky print shorts, scarf around the neck, mismatched kneepads, timberland hiking boots with white athletiuc socks pulled up high, blond braids, gold dangly earrings.

2. the rapping & singing

3. the dancing.

4. the shrug when he’s finished while the song fades out.

5. the post performance interview when he concedes that he doesn’t have any gigs or dates lined up for the future.

all together one of the best bad things on the net!

Enjoy!

Hear the most exciting sounds on the planet at Low End Theory

As all really serious dance music aficionados know, Los Angeles—specifically the east side—is becoming the epicenter of truly far-out, multi-layered, psychedelically-tinged new music. The weekly Low End Theory party, held each Wednesday at the Airliner, is the physical manifestation of this scene and features a world-renowned lineup of DJs, including The Gaslamp Killer, DJ Nobody (AKA Elvin Estela), D-Styles, Daddy Kev and Nocando. Another “high-flying” (cough) selector at the club is Flying Lotus, or Steven Ellison if you want to call him by his birth name. Flying Lotus is the scene’s international breakout star and features the likes of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Erykah Badu on his new album, Cosmogramma. (Ellison is profiled by August Brown in the Los Angeles Times).

The Airliner’s sound system boasts of 10,000 watts of amplification moving through 12 18-inch subharmonic drivers. This rib-rattling sound system is how music was meant to be heard. With speakers that powerful moving the air around the club they probably don’t need air conditioning. This Wednesday’s set features the Daly City Records Tour in addition to the resident DJs.

Low End Theory, Wednesdays @ The Airliner, 2419 N. Broadway, Lincoln Heights.

Blixa Bargeld: Tomorrow Belongs To Him

Wow, Einstürzende Neubauten frontman Blixa Bargeld singing Tomorrow Belongs To Me from Cabaret!  Back in the answering machine era of my youth (and much to the dismay of my Jewish friends and parents), I had this sweet, Nietzschean pastoral set for a time as my away message.  The song was used to great—and chilling—effect in the Bob Fosse film (you can compare Blixa to the original here).

The clip below is from the documentary Berlin Now.  And here’s Stormfront’s white-pride take on the song.  Is it at all perplexing that some of them find the song, written by the Jewish Kander and Ebb, “moving?”

Public Image Ltd. - Death Disco (1979)

As the current iteration of Public Image Ltd. continue to provide an evidently very satisfying P.i.L. experience at a venue near you i happened to stumble upon this 1979 promo clip that I’d never managed to see before. The song title as well as being self descriptive of the music points to the anguished cry of grief over Lydon’s dying mother reflected in the totally non-ironic lyrics. Keith Levene’s guitar and synths, which the 2010 stand-in guy approximates sort of  are brittle, grievous subconscious shards of memory decorating the sparse dub-influenced underpinning. Slick it up for the kids all you like, this song is bulletproof.

DJ Spooky and Chuck D: By the Time I Get to Arizona

DJ Spooky and Chuck D just collaborated on a free download song “By the Time I Get to Arizona,” riffing, of course, on the old standard “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” and, uh, you know, commenting on some pressing news items and stuff.

In the wake of Republican Governor Jan Brewer’s anti-immigrant law, me and Chuck D were rappin’ and we decided to put together an update of his classic track “By The Time I get To Arizona.” Anyone who knows about hip hop from the early 90’s remembers John Mccain’s unwillingness to endorse creating a local version of Martin Luther King’s birthday. The update here is a 21st century look in the rear view mirror. The cliché that “those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it” still holds sway in our hyper amnesiac culture. I remixed D.W. Griffith’s infamous film “Birth of a Nation” with a bit of Public Enemy in mind, and later on, they named an e.p. with the same name as my project. Me and Chuck D have done several projects in the past around progressive, non knucklehead hip hop.

Rimpa Siva, born in 1986, was a pre-teen when these absolutely stunning clips were made. What more can I say ? I was exhilarated and emotionally drained after watching these and shouting my approval at my monitor at regular intervals. I hazard a guess you will be too, momentarily.
