Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?

Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? is expat American in Paris, William Klein’s satirical look at the mid-60s world of fashion. In my opinion, it’s one of the best shot movies of all time. Notice in these clips from the film, just how much Klein is cramming into each meticulously arranged wide-angle shot. His composition is nothing short of breath-taking, up there with the very best cinematographers of world cinema. Who Are You Polly Magoo” will be dissected frame by frame by film aficionados (and music video directors), probably forever. This film was incredibly difficult to see until Criterion put if out as part of the excellent DVD box The Delirious Fictions of William Klein in 2008.

Original movie posters for WIlliam Klein’s films are scarce and can cost a pretty penny (say $1000). I searched for a reasonably priced 60s vintage Polly Maggoo poster for some time before opting for a Japanese reissue poster with the top image here printed on mirror-like mylar. It looks amazing and only cost $20!

Rest in Perversity: Sebastian Horsley

Eight days after the West End premiere of the play based on his autobiography, Dandy in the Underworld, top-hatted London-based extreme artist and lifestylist Sebastian Horsley was found dead this morning at age 47 of an apparent heroin overdose.

Born to wealthy alcoholics, Horsley is best known for traveling to the Philippines to be crucified as part of his research for a set of paintings dealing with the topic. But besides his arcane fashion sense, penchant for whoring, and ability to make the scene—running with the likes of Nick Cave, Current 93, Coil and others—Horsley was an accomplished painter and writer, and a guy with a drawling accent who could hold court in a red velvet chair with the best of them.

The Soho Theatre cancelled tonight’s performance of Dandy…, but will continue on tomorrow. Our own Richard Metzger put it best when told the news: “How sad that the world has one less total pervert.”

From “loincloth collector” SongdogMI, “I used to have a big explanation of why there are breechclouts and loincloths in my closet and why there are photos of them. For now, I’ll just say it’s partly an outgrowth of my interest in the American fur trade, and it’s partly just fun.”

WHAT were they thinking?! Methinks the store, New Form, took it a bit too far.

The advertising slogan tells the store’s teenage and twenty-something target market to “Change Style – Don’t Follow Your Leader”.

Lady Blue Shanghai: David Lynch’s new cinematic short for Dior

For some time, bizarro auteur David Lynch has paid the bills by directing quirky/beautiful television commercials for products like Clear Blue home pregnancy tests, Gucci perfume and Nissan’s Micra. (He directed a particularly odd one for cigarettes.) Now Lynch is back with “Lady Blue Shanghai” a 16-minute short for Dior with French actress Marion Cotillard making mysterious moves around Shanghai locales searching for a glowing purse. All the (in)famous Lynchian touches are there, with the addition this time of John Galliano’s stunning art direction.

Translation: It’s a weird little film. The House of Dior is getting double its money’s worth by funding this project: every hip blog on the planet—including this one—will race to post about the latest from David Lynch. This is a good thing, of course. How else would these diversions get funded?

Kevin Nguyen wonders what it would be like to chat up the women that define scandalous hipster chic:

“If you could have any kind of dog, what would you have? I think I would get a corgi. Corgis are my favorite.”

“Haha, yeah, corgis are the best!”
