NYC-based British illustrator Jon Burgerman has blogged a darkly hilarious series of digitally altered photos titled “Head Shots,” which depict him being murdered by movie and TV posters in the NYC Subway system, in an effort to call attention to the pervasiveness of violence in culture and entertainment. Jon describes the work as “interventions staged in public” and each image features a violent advertisement found in the New York subway. I’m particularly impressed by how simple and effective these images are at highlighting the violence that exists in ads. Most of us pass these types of images everyday and yet we never stop to notice just how violent they can be.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 
Burgerman’s work isn’t typically so violent—in fact it’s really playful and fun. Another wonderful series of his is “Girls of Tumblr,” which is exactly as it says on the box, direct and vibrant marker sketches of women found randomly on Tumblr, then reblogged on Tumblr.
 

 

 

 
Burgerman’s work has been collected into a fantastic book, and has been used in coloring books, coloring wallpaper, jigsaw puzzles and even socks, but sadly, I’m guessing the likelihood of a “Head Shots” coloring book seems dismally low, though it couldn’t hurt to keep an eye on his web store.
