I recently discovered that there’s an online Star Wars opening crawl generator. (Hat tip goes to David Pescovitz’s fascinating post on BoingBoing last week of a behind-the-scenes picture of the shooting of the crawl for Episode V.)

Here’s the crawl from Episode IV, “A New Hope”:

I’ve taken the liberty of creating two mock Star Wars crawls. The text scrolls a good deal faster than in the real movie, which is probably a blessing. The first one features the opening verse of “Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos” by Public Enemy — slightly censored, apparently it doesn’t like curse words — and the second is a pungent John Lurie monologue from Jim Jarmusch’s classic movie Down by Law. By all means make your own!
