Alice Adeline Cooke was convicted of bigamy. Aged 24, Alice had several aliases and at least two husbands.

Intriguing mug shots of female criminals, taken directly after they were arrested and charged at a police station in New South Wales, Australia, from around the turn of the twentieth century.

The photographs come from the Sydney Justice and Police Museum.

Emily Gertrude Hemsworth, May 14th, 1925, aged 24, arrested for killing her three-week-old son. Emily had no memory of the murder, and was found not guilty due to insanity, she was detained in custody until considered fit to return to society.

Dorothy Mort, April 18th, 1921, aged 32, charged with the murder of her lover, Doctor Claude Tozer, who was shot after he tried to break off their affair.

Eshter Eggers, December 16th, 1919, aged 22, sentenced to twelve months for malicious damage to property and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Eugenia Falleni, aka Harry Crawford, August 16th, 1928, aged 43, convicted of murder. Falleni spent most of her life disguised as a man. In 1913, she married widow Annie Birkett, whom she later murdered. Eugenia’s trial caused a media frenzy.

Lillian Sproule, October 31st, 1928, aged 50, drug addict, involved in Sydney’s cocaine trade.

Pearl McFadden, October 31st, 1928, aged 18, arrested and charged with prostitution. Many alleged prostitutes were charged with vagrancy as this was an easier charge to prove than prostitution. Pearl was sentenced to six months hard labor.
