Dying to rock: The bitter feud between two Thai bands that resulted in murder
Thailand is as much a party destination as it is a historical and cultural destination.
As pretty much all of us are aware, a huge amount of the country’s tourism, especially in its capital, Bangkok, is built around bars and clubs that cater to every taste. Yes, that does mean every taste includes the weirder stuff that you’ve almost certainly heard about. There is also a large number of people heading down to BKK for a more tasteful good time. Case in point, every city in the country has a thriving rock and roll scene in the world.
After all, those bars and clubs need all the things that people could possibly want, and people want to see live music. Thus, the presence of hundreds of super-fine rock bands that (seemingly) can actually earn a living playing live without being stadium-filling megastars. They won’t be playing their own music, not by a long shot, and those sets can stretch to two to three hours a night based on what the people want, but the opportunities are there, which is more than can be said for London for decades.
However, those opportunities aren’t limitless, especially the further out from the major cities of Thailand you go. Not everyone who wants to earn a living rocking out can do so, especially if you’re new in town. This leads to a cut-throat attitude between bands, the entire scene playing out against a background of paranoia and backstabbing based on who can get the most plum gigs in the area and who can keep them. Turns out, when the chips are down, people do everything they can to keep their livelihoods alive.
And I do mean everything, because it turns out that “cut-throat” is a very fitting word for this atmosphere since, in January 2026, a rivalry between two bands became lethal.

How a band rivalry in Thailand became lethal
In the early hours of January 19th, Phichate, the drummer and band leader of Rai Kart, a band active in the Nakhon Ratchasima province of Thailand, was found dead on the side of the Dan Khuntod–Thepharak Road in the Dan Khuntod district of his native city.
It was a truly gruesome sight. Phichate had been shot in the mouth while at the wheel of his black pickup truck, which was at the scene of the crime, its engines still running when the police arrived shortly before 5am.
The likelihood of this being a random attack or a mugging was slim, as all of Phichate’s belongings (including the van) were still on his person when police investigated the area. When Phicate’s wife, Nutcharee, was asked about who could possibly want the drummer dead, the only thing she could imagine was another local band who were accusing him and his band of stealing gigs that had been promised to them.
The members of the group were brought in for questioning and eventually cracked. Confessing that they had murdered Phichate over a professional dispute. Four other musicians were arrested in connection with the killing, and a fifth had a warrant put out for him, with an investigation over his whereabouts still ongoing.
Turns out rock ‘n’ roll really is life or death. Who knew?
