Vince Gilligan in the Breaking Bad writers' room
Vince Gilligan, in the Breaking Bad writers’ room

Sixty-one episodes down, one to go. Breaking Bad is almost at its end, and as we await the sure-to-be-exhilarating final episode next week, we provide a look at the process that generated some of the finest narrative TV of recent memory.

While he was researching his what looks to be outstanding Difficult Men, Behind the Scenes of a Creative Revolution: From The Sopranos and The Wire to Mad Men and Breaking Bad, writer Brett Martin was given access to the writers’ room as the Breaking Bad brain trust crafted the unforgettable storyline for Season 4. Martin snapped some photographs as well, and here they are for you to see.

Needless to say, if you haven’t watched Breaking Bad Season 4 and don’t want to be spoiled, you should stop reading now.

Breaking Bad -- BOOM
If you’ve seen all of Season 4, then you already know what “BOOM” means, in the season’s final episode. The fascinating thing to notice here, though, is the reference to Walt disposing of something (or someone) in the ocean—has there ever been a shot of Walt near an ocean? The possibilities of what the writers might have been planning are intriguing…..

More pictures from the Breaking Bad writers’ room, including the writers’ “reference library” and the Breaking Bad-themed bathroom key after the jump…

A cafe in Glasgow, Scotland, has come under criticism for selling Breaking Bad crystal meth cupcakes.

The Riverhill Coffee Bar is selling the cupcakes, with a blue topping that resembles the crystal meth drug manufactured by Bryan Cranston’s character, Walter White, in the hit TV series, at $3.00 a hit.

Christine Duncan, chief executive of Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs, told Glasgow’s Evening Times:

“The glamorising of drugs is completely distasteful.

“We know from our membership base that the impact of drug misuse on families includes financial instability, breakdown in family relationships and the loss of employment.”

Two different points being made by Christine here, neither of which relate to the subject of cupcakes.

Meanwhile Nina Parker, city councillor for the Green Party said:

“It doesn’t sit well with the work that is being done to tackle drug abuse. Quite frankly, there’s nothing funny about recreational drug use.”

I bet Nina’s parties are a riot.

The criticisms relate more to drugs and drug use rather than the retail of a novelty confection. Methinks, the comments are almost veering a wee bit towards Chris Morris’s Brass Eye satire on the drug Cake.

In response a spokesperson for the Riverhill Coffee Bar said:

“We absolutely do not condone the use of drugs. Breaking Bad is such a huge, cult hit and this was simply us jumping on that bandwagon and making something that would appeal to fans of the show.”

If you want to bake your very own Breaking Bad crystal meth cupcakes, then check recipes here and here, or video here.

Lest we forget: Chris Morris investigates the misuse of Cake.

Sonic Meth: Sonic Youth meets ‘Breaking Bad’ tee-shirt

Raymond Pettibon’s cover art for Sonic Youth’s Goo album meets Breaking Bad in this droll tee-shirt mashup.

It reads: “I stole Combo’s mom’s RV. It was all whirlwind, heat, and flash. With-in a week we killed Krazy-8 and hit the road.”

Pettibon’s original illustration was based on a 1966 news photo of Maureen Hindley and David Smith, witnesses in the case of the “Moors murders” serial killers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, as they to made their way to the trial.

It’s available at Society 6 for $18.00.

Walt giving Hank the wrong CD is quickly becoming the new ‘Hitler Reacts’

Much like the “Hitler Reacts” videos, I’m pretty certain this “Walt gives Hank the wrong CD” will surely become a thing (if it hasn’t already).

I wasn’t all that much of a Malcolm in the Middle fan, BUT… I do remember this epic and totally unforgettable scene with Bryan Cranston.

“Heisenberg” would shit himself if he knew he accidentally gave Hank this!

Self-taught makeup artist Carly Paige transforms herself into a damned impressive Walter White from Breaking Bad. To give you an idea of just how talented the 26-year-old Paige is, here’s a photo of what she looks like sans the Heisenberg makeup.

PS - No spoilers from last night’s episode of Breaking Bad in the comments, please. I haven’t watched it yet!

It’s getting to be that time of year again…

Two young’ins dressed as “Walter White” and “Jesse Pinkman” from Breaking Bad. I’m pretty certain this was for mommy and daddy’s amusement.

It feels like “Mr. White” is lacking his “Heisenberg” hat, however, the kid dressed as “Jesse” sure has the face down!

Here’s a superb chronological recap of series 1-4 of Breaking Bad set to Clint Mansell’s “Requiem for a Dream (Orchestral Version).”

The big “reveal” in the last 30 seconds of the season finale last year was one of the single most mind-bending moments of television, ever. If you’ve been trying to get your friends and family to watch the show, the above video is a great way to get them caught up before the season 5 premiere on July 15th.

If you watch the show, you know Breaking Bad is as addicting as meth, but a lot more fun and better for your health. The fourth season is finished and the big question among fans is where is the show gonna go next in its twisty turny road to its fifth season conclusion. Well, those nutzoid Taiwanese animators over at Next Media Animation have come up with what they think is going to happen and it’s batshit crazy.

This is your brain on the blue shit.
