Yes I often promote the products of the label I call er, home: Hometapes. But that’s because they do truly amazing things ! Just look at the art work and packaging for the brand new album Harbors by Wisconsin’s own All Tiny Creatures whilst checking out their pulsating maximalist sound.  Lead Creature Thomas Wincek also does creative time in Volcano Choir with Wisconsin’s favorite son Justin Vernon, he of Bon Iver greatness.  And indeed Vernon is the guest vocalist on An Iris. Ryan Olcott of the late, great Minneapolis band 12 Rods is the guest vocalist on current Pitchfork featured song Glass Bubbles.

The Caribbean - Discontinued Perfume

The Caribbean are not only the owners of one of the most arbitrary and google-proof band names in existence but are also one of the flagship bands on the fabulous label which I call, er, home: Hometapes out of lovely Portland, Oregon. Their new CD, Discontinued Perfume, a stunning batch of thoroughly adept experimental pop songs with startlingly conversational lyrics (best song title ever: Thank You for Talking To Me About Israel), is released on February 22nd and available for pre-order today. But wait, there’s more ! Here is a song entitled Outskirts from said album featuring your not-so-humble bloggist pitching in harmony vocals, tinkly piano and a possibly wildly inappropriate guitar solo. Like a nosy neighbor stepping into a conversation he doesn’t quite understand, in The Caribbean’s world where disparate elements make for striking art it actually works. Have a listen.

Enjoy a free digital LP of holiday related songs from the ultra-fine label that releases me choons. Mine’s the third one in, a song of conflicted ambivalence. Hope ya dig it. Happy Frank Zappa’s birthday, everyone !

Sayeth my fine imprint Hometapes:

Today is the first day of the rest of your summer. We’re giving you a free song to celebrate. A soundtrack to start your car to, to wring out your towel to, to take a walk to tonight. Brad Laner’s new album Natural Selections comes out August 24. The packaging is at the Hometapes house. The green vinyl is on the truck. I thought I couldn’t be hypnotized by this record any further, any deeper, but my heart just jumped, primally, with the first drum hit of “Eyes Close.” Damn, this is good. You can pre-order the record now and we’ll ship it out to you by, or likely before, that magical August day when Natural Selections belongs to everybody.

Aww, flattery will get you everywhere ! Please do make sure to download the mp3, especially if you grabbed the one from last week which was the wrong mix. oops !

Yes indeed, it’s time again for me to pimp some o’ my own wares here on the DM. The lovely and talented Hometapes imprint, the label which released my first solo LP, Neighbor Singing a few years back, has announced an August 24th release date for my latest psycho-delic art-rock LP entitled Natural Selections. That’s the cover image up there, a photo of my boss son, Julian who also sings a tune of his own creation on the LP. Have a listen to one of the cuts below if you wanna.

Hey that’s my name up there in pretty red letters ! Sorry for the self-indulgence so early in my tenure, but this here atheist Jew has composed and recorded a Christmas song for the 8 days of Hometapes event and today is my day. Hometapes is the fine and happening Portland-based label that released my 2007 solo debut LP, Neighbor Singing and is due to release my 2nd, Natural Selections some time next year.
