‘The Shining,’ A Clockwork Orange,’ ‘Scarface’ & more become Ottoman miniature style works of art

A scene from ‘A Clockwork Orange’ in the style of an “Ottoman miniature” painting by artist Murat Palta.

Artist Murat Palta has created a fantastic series of works in which he juxtaposes a famous scene from a well-known film with the style of an “Ottoman miniature” painting. The results may alter a viewer’s perception of said films as Palta’s subjects wear expressionless faces in his paintings—despite (for the most part) being stuck in the midst of all kinds of fictional chaos and mayhem.

Hailing from Turkey, Palta’s first cinematic/Ottoman mashup from 2011 combined characters and scenes from Star Wars and received so much attention that he decided to take on a few other memorable movie scenes. Such as the bloodbath at the House of Blue Leaves in Kill Bill, Jack Nicholson’s door-smashing mental breakdown in The Shining and a scene from A Clockwork Orange where the Droogs and Alex DeLarge (played by Malcolm McDowell) put the boot in on a homeless man just for, ahem, kicks.

I think it’s a pretty safe bet that you’re going to dig Palta’s paintings as much as I did. You can also view them in more detail over at Palta’s “Classic Movies in Minature Style” page on Behance. That said, some might be considered slightly NSFW.

Just when I thought I had pretty much seen everything that had anything to do with the the 1983 film Scarface, this came across my radar—elaborately embroidered leather jackets with images and quotes from the film. ‘Da fuck?

Scarface embroidered leather jacket (say hello sleeve)

This coat is adorned with famous quotes from the movie such as “Say hello to my little friend” (because it wouldn’t be a proper homage to Scarface without those five words) and “World is your” (minus the word “the”) and other memorable phrases. There are also images of Tony Montana’s mean mug sucking on a fat cigar and clutching his modified Colt AR-15 sewn into the jacket only a true Scarface fanatic would wear. A few of these sweet and strange homages were made to mark the 20th anniversary of the film back in 2003, then it appears they were knocked off in a further effort to cash in on the film and character immortalized by Al Pacino 32 years ago.

There are a few different variants of this bizarre piece of outerwear for sale on eBay that, just like the world, could be yours for anywhere from $50 to the delusional sum of $500. Loads of images for you cockroaches to gawk at follow.

‘Like a great big chicken just waiting to be plucked’—‘Scarface’ edited for TV is plucking HILARIOUS

When I’m King of the Universe, it will be a law that all home video releases of films must include the option of watching the edited-for-broadcast version wherever one exists. I first began to lean toward this policy when, stoned as fuck, I caught The Breakfast Club late at night on a local UHF station (yeah, I’m kind of old.…) and found myself howling with laughter at some of the preposterous dialogue substitutions—for example, the immortal “hot beef injection” line was bowdlerized into “some hot wild affection,” as if the original line wasn’t a euphemism in the first place. But the need for such a law was confirmed to me when, one Christmas, my then-girlfriend gifted me a boxed set of the 1983 Al Pacino remake of Scarface.

It merits mentioning, so I may as well mention it here: Scarface isn’t nearly as good a movie as its reputation would suggest. Which is not to say that it’s bad. It’s not. It’s just not a great movie. If you’re in the mood for astoundingly over-the-top tough-guy posturing and GIANT FUCKING MAYHEM, it’s one of the single most badass films in history, but as a narrative work in the immigrant crime drama genre, it’s far eclipsed by plenty of films you could name, a fair few of which also star Al Pacino. And of course, it distinguished itself in its day as one of the most unabashedly profanity-laden mainstream films ever released, almost in a class all it’s own before the f-bomb-a-thon The Big Lebowski emerged as a challenger. And one of the DVD extras in that boxed set was a montage comparing the original dialogue to the censored scenes in the movie’s broadcast TV version. It’s some pretty entertaining shit. I honestly would have thought it couldn’t be done, and really, I was kinda right.
