Attention, Los Angeles prankster community: If you haven’t heard, the hateful Westboro Baptist Church will be in town this weekend, picketing the memorial for the late heavy metal warbler, Ronnie James Dio. Considering the idea of who will be at the service (metal heads) and how many video cameras there are in this town, I fully expect to see YouTube clips next week which will rival the immortal Heavy Metal Parking Lot! This is truth-is-funnier-than-fiction style comedy in the making, folks. Could be historically funny.

The memorial will be held at The Hall of Liberty, Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles; May 30, 2 p.m. and is free to the heavy metal-loving public.

Here’s an excerpt from the confused ramblings about the protest from the God Hates Fags website the Church operates:

WBC to picket this public memorial to remind you who worship that old Serpent, Satan, that your time is very short. You know 67 year old, Satan-worshiping (or at least one of their enablers) Ronnie James Dio (of showing his devil horns to the world each time he goes in public) Black Sabbath fame is dead, right? We’ll be there! Just because the chances of any of God’s elect being amongst this group of heavy metal sycophants is slim to none does not mean they should not get some good words. Yes, it is true that Ozzy Osbourne did “accidentally” bite off the head of a bat, but THAT is the least of their sins (little nasties!), they currently do not do that, but they throw raw meat to the audience and encourage violence of EVERY FORM! Here you have the list of admitted sins of this now dead and in hell pervert: 1) He hates his neighbor(s) starting with Ozzy Osbourne 2) He hates God. Pay especial attention to the fact that he changed his original sir name from Padanova to Dio, which means “God” in Italian. 3)Ronnie the simpleton enabled, and encouraged Sorceries: everything he was about including the little finger horn thing (he got this from his mother which is an incantation to ward off the “evil eye”) to the drugs, bloody raw meat and his fellowship with those pentagram necklace wearing freakish band members. Yes, Ronnie James Padanova (NOT DIO) is currently residing in hell. When all those who worship him and his false gods meet him in hell it will be just like this: Isaiah 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low: Isaiah 14:11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. Praise God all ye, His people. The Great Day of the Lord draws nigh. AMEN

!

Did you get that?

Thank you Julien Nitzberg!

Not In Our Town: West Virginians spread the love to counter the hate with flash mob organizing

The picketing hate group known as the Westboro Baptist Church—which is basically just one family, led by patriarch the Rev. Fred Phelps and his daughter Margie—is infamous the world over for its hate speech aimed at Jews, blacks, Catholics and especially homosexuals. The Phelps family made a trip to West Virginia earlier this month to picket things the Phelps family—calling them a “church” is really twisting language—view as sinful. This could be just about anything with the Phelps family, of course, and often is: The WBC once picketed an appliance store that sold a particular brand of Swedish vacuum cleaner.

Why? Because Sweden supports gay rights, of course!

Make sense? Of course it doesn’t. These are the same people who picket the funerals of dead American service members with signs reading “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” and instruct their children to desecrate the American flag as families grieve. Astonishingly, during their stay in West Virginia, as news from the Montcoal Mine disaster became known, the Phelpses targeted the families of the dead miners!

But how do you counter such people when they decide to inflict themselves on your community? First off, you don’t even bother trying to counter them, you siphon off their media thunder. Concerned civic and religious groups in Wheeling and Charleston took the novel approach of using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to organize Stop the Hate Rallies, Spread the Love flash mobs.

Signs in front yards also spread the message: “West Virginia is No Place for Hate!” with symbols of Judaism, Christianity and a rainbow (representing gay and lesbian residents) by far outnumbering the placards carried by the Phelps family (one read “God Hates WV.” Another said “You Will Eat Your Babies”!). But it was the disco dancing flash mobs doing the electric boogaloo to “Take Me Home Country Roads” that stole the show.

“We want to become the story; to steal the story from the WBC,” said one organizer, Rabbi Jim Cohn of Temple Israel. “We’re annoyed by the idea that they get the publicity through hatred.”

“God Hates Fags” Son Speaks

Reverend Fred Phelps (above) is the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, the fire-and-brimstone outfit that attributes America’s “eternal damnation” to homosexuality (so, yes, that last link does indeed, sadly, take you to godhatesfags.com).

What distinguishes Phelps and his 12 or so kids (including daughter Shirley, his most passionate supporter), from most church-goers, though, is that this family really likes to get their picket on, waving signs and spewing hate at grade schools, gay pride parades, even at the funerals of soldiers.  Their enemy list includes such figures as Bill O’Reilly, Coretta Scott King and Ronald Reagan.  And now one more: estranged son, Nate Phelps.

Nate escaped a life of hate (and frequent beatings, apparently) and is starting to talk about it.  He recently sat down with Canadian TV’s Peter Klein, and described what it was like “running from hell.”  Give it a look, it’s a bizarre but fascinating 30 minutes.
