Waymo reports drunken teenagers to the police in California
This summer, the Waymo driverless vehicles have captivated football fans visiting Los Angeles for the World Cup, but these cars are smarter than you may think.
While there have been plentiful of entertaining videos that have surfaced on social media of confused Scottish tourists treating their Waymo like a traditional taxi and attempting to engage in small-talk, riders shouldn’t try to push their luck too much, or they could be arrested.
On July 6th, two teenagers took a Waymo in San Mateo, California, and allegedly began to drink alcohol as well as firing a toy gun while in the vehicle.
Although this kind of antics wouldn’t fly in a normal Uber, surely, if there’s no driver, then there’s no way to get caught, right? Wrong.
According to the San Mateo Police Department, they detained the pair of 15-year-olds after the Waymo alerted them to their behaviour. The vehicle stopped in a parking lot after informing the officers, who then came to the driverless car.
They wrote on Facebook, “Parents do you know where your teens are? Waymo does!”
“Toy guns, water guns, and BB guns all pose real dangers, especially to an untrained eye,” the police department added, before claiming, “The simple handling of them can cause fear in [passersby].”
Police spokesperson Jeanine Luna later told ABC7News, “I’m not sure what led to them learning about what was going on in their vehicle, but once they had the information, they did contact us immediately, told us what they saw, told us where they were and actually disable the vehicle for us.”
As it stands, none of the teenagers have been charged, and the case remains under review by the local police in San Mateo.
Next time you jump in a Waymo, remember to be on your best behaviour to avoid getting on the wrong side of the dystopian robocops.
