The Independent Film Channel website has posted their choice of the “The 50 Greatest Opening Title Sequences of All Time.”
Number one is Saul Bass’s iconic and often imitated opening titles for Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece Vertigo. In the number 27 slot is one of my favorites Taxi Driver. The yellow cab emerging from a cloud of sewer steam as Bernard Herrman’s ominous score plays on the soundtrack is some dark New York poetry. Michael Chapman’s lysergic cinematography adds to the nightmarish mood.

Frankly, if I was planning a drive to New Mexico from Los Angeles, I’d rather drive around Arizona than buy gas in the state and give a single penny to Jan Brewer and her venal Republican pals to spend on their racist, anti-immigrant law enforcement. When I think of Arizona, I can’t get Gov. Jan Brewer’s mean, sun-damaged lemon-face out of my mind. The sight of her sickens me. Apparently quite a few folks in the southern part of the state must feel the same way and have decided to do something about it. BRAVO! From Pueblo Politics:
A political committee comprised of a handful of attorneys, including the former chairman of the Pima County Democratic Party, have established a political committee dedicated to helping Southern Arizona secede from the rest of the state.
Start Our State, which is asking other like-minded counties to join the effort, is hoping to put the question before Pima County voters in 2012.
Co-chair Paul Eckerstrom said it’s not a joke and not a political statement. He said the state legislature has gone too far to the right, particularly with a round of measures to challenge federal supremacy.
“This really does border on them saying they don’t want to be part of the Union any longer,” he said. “Well, I want to be part of the United States.”
He said at a minimum, it will send a message that Pima County doesn’t want to go along with the priorities being outlined in Phoenix. He said Pima County has more land and more people than several other states.
“It’s no longer a laughing matter to me,” Eckerstrom said. “My kids’ futures are at stake because if this continues, the economic ramifications could be very dire. I’m tired of hoping and praying that rationality will come to Phoenix.”
The committee is pressing the Pima County Board of Supervisors to put the measure on the ballot. If that doesn’t happen, Eckerstrom said the group is prepared to circulate petitions.
Frankly, it’s about time something like this happened in Arizona. The hard right, racist asshats in Phoenix need someone to call their bluff. But would the new state be viable? Absolutely. Pima County has more than 1 million residents, about the same number of people as Rhode Island as. It actually has a larger population than Vermont, Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas, as per the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2009 estimates. The proposed new state would be larger than Rhode Island, Delaware and Connecticut. And secession would absolutely decimate the tax coffers of the state they’d depart!
And again I say, “Bravo”!
Sad news, indeed, the former lead singer of punk pioneers X-Ray Spex, one of the most distinctive front-women of the punk era, Poly Styrene (real name Marian Joan Elliott-Said) is battling cancer, From her website:
It comes as a huge shock to all those who know Poly Styrene.
Poly has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing various treatments in her battle with this illness.
She is devastated that she cannot commit to any live dates at this stage, but her album remains a very positive force in her current journey.
“It’s been a bit of a battle fighting this cancer but hey ho I’m still alive, Luv Poly x”
Best wishes to the vocalist of “Oh Bondage! Up Yours!” (which I used in the Disinformation TV show incidentally). Poly Styrene’s new album is the critically acclaimed Generation Indigo. Wish her well on her Facebook page and consider buying her album. MOJO and Option magazines both loved it.

They actially stick up for the little guy! On Fox fucking News! For reals. You won’t believe it!

Yes, that’s THE Goblin, Italian prog supremos and soundtrack authors of Suspiria, Dawn Of The Dead, Tenebrae, Deep Red and more. Not only will this be the first time the band have played in Scotland and the North-West, but this will be their first shows in the UK featuring founder member Claudio Simonetti.
I know, right?! I haven’t been as excited about a gig in years!
OK, I know this is only relevant to readers in the UK, but amazingly there are tickets left for both shows (why haven’t they sold out?), so if you live in Newcastle/Gateshead or Glasgow, there’s still time to catch the band in action. I’ve had my ticket for ages - it wasn’t cheap but it wasn’t extortionate (£22 inc booking fee - it’s cheaper in Gateshead) and this is GOBLIN we’re talking about here. Beloved of horror afficianados, prog rock fans, electronica and dance artists, break spotters, goths, metal-heads, sleuths, zombie hunters and Black Forest headmistresses alike.
Tonight Goblin play at The Sage in Gateshead, with support from Warm Digits.
Tomorrow they play The Arches in Glasgow, as part of the city’s Film & Music Festival, with a special occult-cinema manifestation from the band OV.
