‘60s Swedish instrumental group The Spotnicks had the coolest fashion sense of any band to come out of Scandinavia. And man did they love reverb.

Here’s two cool clips of the band. Any bets that Devo got some fashion tips from these cats?

Portraits in Licorice: New Work by Jason Mecier and Adam J. Ansell

New “eye candy” from Dangerous Minds fave Jason Mecier showing in San Francisco, with work from his partner, Adam J. Ansell, in an exhibit called We Like to Watch TV, opening August 1 and running through September 30.

I just love this portrait of “Dexter” done in licorice!

Celebrity mosaic portrait artist Jason Mecier and longtime partner, painter Adam J. Ansell, have teamed up to create a new body of work inspired by their favorite pastime… watching TV! Expect to see many faces from TV, movies, reality shows, sitcoms, documentaries, music videos and even commercials.

Adam’s edgy, high fashion, expressionistic paintings, ironically capture eccentric television personalities from The Real Housewives, Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, True Blood, and The Wendy Williams Show, to Millionaire Matchmaker, Larry King and many others.

Jason’s new works are striking and delicious, made entirely out of licorice! Thousands of fat free red and black licorice vines have been carefully glued into the likenesses of Mo’Nique, Judge Judy, Dexter, Freddy Krueger, Nomi Malone, Taylor Lautner, and others.

Opening Reception Sunday August 1, 6-9pm

I Need That Record: The Life And Death Of Indie Record Stores

I Need That Record
, Brendan Toller’s documentary on the life and death of indie record stores, has finally hit the streets. Initially released to record stores only on May 17,  the DVD as of today is available everywhere.

Seeing the shot of Vinyl Mania shuttered in the first few seconds of the trailer breaks my heart. I spent many hours shopping for obscure vinyl in that place, mecca for vinyl junkies.

Greedy record labels, media consolidation, homogenized radio, big box stores, Ecommerce, shoddy “stars” pushed by big money, and the digital revolution all pose threats on the very well being of our favorite record stores and the music industry at large. Will these stores die? Will they survive

You can buy I Need That Record at Amazon.

Orange Sunshine: The Strange But True Story of the ‘Hippie Mafia’

An interview with Nicholas Schou, author of Orange Sunshine: The Brotherhood of Eternal Love and Its Quest to Spread Peace, Love, and Acid to the World. The inside story of the infamous gang of dope-dealing surfers who played a key role in the counterculture of the Sixties. It’s a mindblowing—and improbable—tale of drug smuggling, large scale marihuana farming and LSD distribution—basically, it’s the hidden history of how America got turned on. The story of the Brotherhood might’ve gone to the grave with the participants if not for Nicholas Schou’s intriguing history. Highly recommended.

Seeburg Industrial Background Music Records

I think that those of us who are old enough to remember hearing actual Muzak in public places were in fact hearing one of these diabolical devices: The Seeburg 1000 background music system. Essentially a stackable spindle record player that played Seeburg’s specially produced 16rpm, big hole in the middle LPs chock full of motivating background music, sure to bring out the productivity in your employees and the wallets from your customers. I was delighted to find literally hundreds of clips of these records, alas mostly being played on conventional players, on the youtubes. For the pupose of this post I’m concentrating on a few examples from Seeburg’s long running Industrial library:

Average tempo: medium fast. Predominantly instrumental, with a light seasoning of great vocals. An occasional polka or march. Emphasis on popular music. Minimum of stringed instruments. Unusually rhythmical. Over-all lively character but never a rock ‘n’ roll. Designed for Industrial plants only.

Much more after the jump…

Attention people of Earth and Southern California!

This Thursday marks the opening of How We Roll, a six-month exhibition on African-America’s contribution to surfing, skateboarding and rollerskating culture at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles.

Starting with the history of black surfing from the 17th and 18th century in Polynesia and Africa and on into the US, the exhibit rolls through the African-American surf-skateboard-rollerskate continuum featuring photos by Glen E. Friedman, Grant Brittain, Jim Goodrich, Lance Dawes, Atiba Jefferson, Neftalie and more. Spotlights include the legacy of pioneering black female pro skateboarder Stephanie Person and the way that skateboarding has cross-pollinated with black music formats like Afropunk, hip-hop, jazz and reggae.

Get a preview of what the exhibit looks like here.

Here’s a piece of the black skateboarding story on the East Coast from Jeremiah Alexis via Current TV

Bonus clip after the jump: a tribute to the irrepressible black skater & actor Harold Hunter, R.I.P.

NYC Blackout ‘77: From the Streets to the Towers

At 9:30 PM EST exactly 33 years ago, New York City’s five boroughs suffered a massive power outage that changed plenty about the United States and the Western World. It took a little more than 24 hours for the ’77 blackout to end, but not before 1,616 stores were damaged in looting and rioting, 1,037 fires were responded to, and 3,776 people were arrested. The event and its effects are still under study at places like George Mason University in Virginia.

Here are Grandmaster Caz, Disco Wiz, KRS One, Annie Sprinkle and others reminiscing from the street perspective…

…and below, leave it to the BBC to credit post-welfare-state neo-liberalism for saving the Big Apple:
