The good old days, when you could still mail a child

From the online presence of the National Postal Museum:

One of the oddest parcel post packages ever sent was “mailed” from Grangeville to Lewiston, Idaho on February 19, 1914. The 48 1/2 pound package was just short of the 50 pound limit. The name of the package was May Pierstorff, four years old.

May’s parents decided to send their daughter for a visit with her grandparents, but were reluctant to pay the train fare. Noticing that there were no provisions in the parcel post regulations specifically concerning sending a person through the mails, they decided to “mail” their daughter. The postage, 53-cents in parcel post stamps, was attached to May’s coat. This little girl traveled the entire distance to Lewiston in the train’s mail compartment and was delivered to her grandmother’s home by the mail clerk on duty, Leonard Mochel.

Now that’s what I call finding a loophole. At least they didn’t put her in a box.

Unavoidably, I am reminded of Lou Reed’s short story of poor Waldo Jeffers, hapless protagonist of “The Gift” by the Velvet Underground.

Another “song” (and I use that term loosely here) from Sue and Michael Brownson, the couple behind the Tim and Eric-esque “I Am Here (A Love Letter from God)” thing posted here yesterday.

Check out their website, it’s as if Kenneth the page from 30 Rock got married and decided to become a Christian Teabagger version of… Kraftwerk.

I know that doesn’t make any sense, but I don’t think Sue and Michael Bownson do.

Bless.

Janet Greene was the Joan Baez of the 1960’s anti-commie movement. The music director of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, Greene released one album on the Chantico label in 1966, a collection of red-baiting ditties with titles like ‘Fascist Threat’, ‘Poor Left Winger’ and ‘Commie Lies’.

“Be careful of the Commie lies, swallow them and freedom dies: The USA must realize that she’s the biggest prize.”

There’s a nifty article on Greene at Conelrad.com here.

And now for your listening pleasure, music to have a tea party to, Janet Greene…

Tina, Yuki and Sumire, post-op transexual trio The Spanky Girls, sing ‘Mapouka’, a song about their asses (I think).

Girls, no amount of surgery is gonna change the fact that you can’t sing. But, you do look good.

Politically incorrect? Yes. Funny? Yes.

Apparently some viewers find the ad offensive. Not me.

I love that twist ending.

The song is “If It Don’t fit (Don’t Force It)” by Barrel House Annie. The ad is from Australian agency Marketforce.

In this latest brilliant comedy short from Jackal Films (director Jacqueline Wright and writer/performer Alice Lowe), Dangerous Minds pal, Rich Fulcher stars in the title role, of “My Old Baby” a “tragic true story of a baby afflicted with a rare degenerative condition, with horrific irreversible symptoms.” Clearly, this is a role Rich was born to play! (I just hope, you know, he doesn’t get typecast). Narrated by Sharon Horgan.
