A suitably creepy promo vid for a March 2011 release under the frequently used alias AFX entitled Seaside Specials. New work by Mr. James is always welcome !

UPDATE: This isn’t AFX, just a misleading ad for a festival. Sorry !

Imminent - Cask Strength

Last year, after a decade’s hiatus, Olivier Moreau resurrected Imminent (formerly known as Imminent Starvation), the moniker by which he pioneered the convergence of industrial power and electronic music in the 1990s. After his seminal record Nord in 1999, Moreau smashed his mixing desk, and gave pieces of it away with a limited edition of the disc. Since then, Olivier has worked on a variety of collaborations as Axiome, Ambre and Myrza.

However, Moreau has not allowed Imminent to flounder, instead, in the best ad man’s jargon, has “cask conditioned” his music to achieve its full potential.

like any good whisky that has to mature for at least 10 years in a cask, it took the same time for this release to maturate - and it was worth awaiting the ripening. indeed the music is comparable to a cask strength whisky’s taste: raw, aggressive, powerful, without any concession or any additive to dilute it’s true nature, but it also includes a lot of complexity that awaits to be discovered by a true connoisseur.

Imminent’s Cask Strength is available on CD, and in a special boxed edition. There is also a whisky tumbler available. Having just completed a successful tour of Russia, Imminent play London on the 27th November.

The question of whether or not Genesis Breyer P-Orridge has quit Throbbing Gristle remains not fully answered. Despite Thee Deevelopment, TGers Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson, Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti have gone on to fulfill their early-November live TG obligations in Italy and Portugal as X-TG. The group has uploaded some media from those shows on their new site.

P-Orridge’s ambivalent statement on the matter was offset by “Unkle Sleazy’s” take, and there’s likely debate as to how much value a P-Orridge-less TG holds. I’d think the excerpts below from the two shows speak for themselves.

Bob Dylan, punk rocker

A sly, surly and sardonically funny Bob Dylan lays into Time Magazine correspondent Horace Judson in this scene captured by D.A. Pennebaker in 1965. This IS punk rock! John Lydon was 9 years old when this footage was shot. Bob went out on a limb when most pop stars played it safe. You know Lennon was paying attention.

Judson ended up writing a favorable piece on Dylan.

Luie Luie: ‘El Touchy’

One man band Luie Luie introduces his new dance El Touchy.

Luis Johnston is a Southern California screenwriter, painter, and musician who’s spent the past 30 years working in almost complete obscurity. But he’s also written and starred in a feature film and shaken hands with Elvis Presley. Luie has been playing live at various restaurants, lounges, and country clubs for three decades and is still going strong. He released a handful of 45s in the ‘70s and one full-length LP, “Touchy” in 1974. And he continues to record unknown quantities of yet to be released CDs.

Once a rare and coveted collector’s item, Luie’s album has been re-issued and is available here. As for me, I want to buy Luie’s belt.

See the Flamin’ Groovies shake some action, 1972

It’s been said of The Flamin’ Groovies that they sounded like the Rolling Stones, had the Stones sworn their allegiance to Sun Records rather than Chess Blues and that seems about right to me.

The Groovies, who started in San Francisco, circa 1965, never really caught on here and moved to England, getting caught up in the brief pre-punk enthusiasm for “pub rock” which saw them lumped together with bands like Dr. Feelgood and Dave Edmunds & Rockpile. By the time punk came around, they were all but forgotten, although they did have a song (“Shake Some Action”) on the Clueless soundtrack that a lot of people seem to know.

Below, The Flamin’ Groovies do their anti-drug anthem, “Slow Death” in 1972. This is pretty amazing, I must say.

Animated by Gary Gutierrez, the first 7 minutes of The Grateful Dead Movie feature some of the trippiest visuals you’ll ever see. This is to cartoons what DMT is to psychedelics.

“The Grateful Dead Movie”, was largely the brainchild of Jerry Garcia. It was designed to be a memento for the fans, documenting five days of concerts at Winterland in San Francisco in October 1974.

I believe God is a good God. Why? Because he created Marianne Faithfull.

Marianne Faithfull looking stunningly gorgeous in 1967 French musical comedy Anna starring Anna Karina and Jean-Claude Brialy. In this scene Marianne sings ‘Hier Ou Demain’ written by Serge Gainsbourg.

Oh, Marianne. My knees are trembling, my upper lip quivering, my groin is vibrating like a tuning fork struck by the hand of God and storm clouds are bursting in the skies hovering above my feverish head. My dog is slapping me silly and begging to come to my senses. Could this be love? .

From The Byrds To The Eagles: Terrific BBC documentary on Southern California rock

In-depth and fascinating, Hotel California: LA from The Byrds to The Eagles charts the evolution of the Southern California rock scene of the sixties thru the seventies. Based on Barney Hoskin’s book of the same name, this is good stuff, whether or not you’re a fan of the lite psych/folk sound of L.A., Topanga Canyon and points West. Myself, I can do without The Eagles, CSN&Y and Jackson Browne, but The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, solo Neil Young and Joni Mitchell still tingle my spine.
