Yor: The Hunter From the Future

I was just alerted to the existence of this movie in a comments forum over at io9 by user “SupaChupacabra.” This looks stupendously bad, a cross between GOR and TURKISH STAR WARS. And apparently a great lost gem in the annals of barbarian cinema, a genre which should be resurrected properly, sans the Rock.

From the Wiki, which is almost as funny as the actual clip:

Yor, The Hunter From The Future is a film released in 1983. It was directed by the famous Italian B-movie director Antonio Margheriti (also known as Anthony M. Dawson) and starring Reb Brown, and was pieced together from a 4-part science-fiction miniseries shown on Italian television. The setting is a mixture between prehistoric and futuristic, borrowing elements from numerous popular franchises of the time. It has been released on DVD in Germany…

The movie opens with Reb Brown, as Yor, jogging around the stone towers of Cappadocia, Turkey while a rock ballad plays in the background. In a nearby village, Kala, a seemingly primitive cave-woman, and her older protector Pak are hunting. Suddenly, they are attacked by a Stego-Ceratops. Yor appears apparently from nowhere and kills the dinosaur with his axe, drinking some of its blood immediately afterwards. Yor is befriended by the village and together they cut the choice meats to be feasted upon in a celebration….

(More on that here.)

(And you know this shit must be good because you can only get it on VHS.)

(Although here’s some links to watch it for free!)

Has anybody here actually SEEN this monstrosity?

While the sandstorm clouds of another Dune movie threaten to gather once again, tidbits of the visually striking David Lynch version keep rolling in.  Back in ‘83, the one-time future Mrs. Novicoff actress Sean Young, who played Chani against Kyle MacLachlan’s Paul Atreides, brought her video camera to Mexico City’s massive Dune set.  Here’s a bit of what she experienced:

Batman 3 Coming in 2012!

Whether or not we all dissolve into rainbow-shooting dolphins and unicorns of the 27th dimension in 2012, AT LEAST WE KNOW FOR SURE THAT THERE WILL BE A NEW BATMAN MOVIE. OH GOD YES.

The release date for the new film, presumably directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, and completing a trilogy of the most UTTERLY SWEET FILMS IN ALL TIMES KNOWN AND UNKNOWN, is set at July 20, 2012.

(Note: Above poster, with David Tennant as the Riddler, is not real, just in case it had to be said.)

In one of the most anticipated announcements in recent memory, Warner Bros. officially set a date this morning for the follow-up to The Dark Knight. Tentatively known as Batman 3, the movie will debut July 20, 2012 in conventional and IMAX theaters, almost exactly four years after The Dark Knight opened to record-breaking numbers.

At this time, there are no details available regarding the plot or the cast, though it is assumed that Christian Bale at least will be reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Warner Bros. was also unable to confirm whether or not Batman Begins and Dark Knight writer-director Christopher Nolan would be taking on those responsibilities again for part three.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child

After seeing the below trailer, I’m excited to see director Tamra Davis’s documentary portrait of painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, The Radiant Child. The other day I found a photo I took of him at a New York nightclub opening in 1986 in a box in my garage. He’s just glaring at the camera, like he’s pissed off, but he looks cool doing it. The same roll had photos of Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.

A friend of the graffiti/Neo-expressionist painter, director Tamra Davis paints her own portrait of the artist, who died at age 27, and offers an indictment of celebrity culture.

Davis met Basquiat while she was attending film school and working as a gallery assistant in Los Angeles. In 1985, she filmed an interview of Basquiat, which comprises the centerpiece of this film, along with rare footage of him painting.

“I saw anger in him but I also saw this whole other side of him, very intelligent, funny, filled with life, smiles, dances and super-flirty, super-charming,” said Davis. “That was the person who, I felt, people were getting it wrong.”

Davis said being around Basquiat there was “always so much happening, let’s do this, let’s go here, let’s see how far we can push this, what would happen if I did this, let’s go as fast as we can, let’s fly to Paris, let’s go out to dinner to the fanciest restaurant and order the best wine. Pushing the limit the furthest, so being around him was really fun but also crazy.”

The documentary, which will have its theatrical release later this year, is a collage of period footage, including the interview with Basquiat and new interviews with his friends/colleagues, such as Julian Schnabel, Larry Gagosian, Fab 5 Freddy, Glenn O’Brien and others.

Orson Welles: Trashing Rosebud In Paris

Yesterday saw Kultur‘s release of Orson Welles: The Paris InterviewWelles was always a candid, cantankerous speaker, and this sit-down, conducted with Bernard Braden, is particularly memorable for the Citizen Kane director’s utter trashing of that film‘s famous (spoiler alert?) sled, Rosebud.

Welles says he was ashamed of it and called it, “a rather tawdry device…a dollar-book Freudian gag.”  The complete Paris interview runs about an hour.  10 minutes of it follows below:
