Cibo Matto’s back with a fun new song—plus they’re going on tour!

Cibo Matto

Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda, also known as Cibo Matto, made some pretty significant waves in the mid-1990s with Viva! La Woman, which featured delightfully berserk songs about food, such as “Birthday Cake.” (Boy howdy, I listened to “Birthday Cake” waaaay too much around 1997.) They released their last album, Stereo Type A, in 1999, but yesterday it was announced that Hatori and Honda, having toiled away in the studio for the last couple of years, have a new album on the way and will be touring early in the new year, and they even offered up a brand-new song called “MFN” (for “Mother Fucking Nature”) that you can listen to right now!

To me it sounds like they’ve scarcely lost a step—indeed, “MFN” reminds me mostly of Das Racist, which prompts the thought that Das Racist surely owes Cibo Matto a great debt of gratitude in their own right.

The new album is called Hotel Valentine, features guests Nels Cline from Wilco and Reggie Watts, and is a concept album involving a “love story and a group of ghosts in a hotel.”

The month-long tour covers most of February and the first week of March, starting in New Haven and ending in Pittsburgh. Get more details here.

The video for “MFN” is below. It’s got so many flashing & garish colors blinking on and off, it’ll probably make your eyes water. In fact, I’m going to throw out a photosensitive epilepsy warning just to be on the safe side.
