Brown Acid, The Ninth Trip: More heavy rock from the underground comedown

After eight installments in their legendary Brown Acid heavy ROCK compilations (or “trips” as they’re called) you would think that the fine folks at RidingEasy Records would be finding it more and more difficult to come up with these all-killer, no-filler albums with each successive volume, but judging from Brown Acid: The Ninth Trip, this is obviously not the case. You wouldn’t think there was an endless supply of “the dankest hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal bangers you’ve never heard before” but apparently there is… IF you know (exactly) where to look for it.

So where DO they find—and keep finding—these insanely obscure slabs of pure unadulterated post-Altamont hard rock, you’re probably asking? There’s one “for instance” from the press release that is wonderfully illustrative of the hunt for heaviness, it’s the tale of the incredibly obscure Pittsburgh band 29.9:

Brown Acid can be found in some of the least likely places, as long as you can pay close attention. One iota of distraction could’ve caused 29.9 to have remained in obscurity for another 50 years! This band came into our lives while watching the cult horror film Effects with diehard Pittsburgher, Tara Kudlac. Her dad, Barney McKenna, is one of the actors in said film. Effects is entertaining to say the least, but the star for us (besides Barney, of course!) is a very short clip of background music in a scene where one of the characters is looking through a stack of bondage polaroids. As the photos are being flipped through, the boombox blasts a Pentagram-esque hard rocker that caught our attention immediately. We bothered Barney who helped us get in touch with the director of the film, John Harrison. Turns out the song in Effects was by a band John played in with his brother, Doug, and a couple of other guys in the late-60s. They called themselves 29.9, and they recorded “Paradiddle Blues” and a few other tracks, but never released any of them, until now.

Clearly these motherfuckers are committed!

And here’s a stream of Brown Acid: The Ninth Trip in its entirety. This volume is ALL AMERICAN bands. Dig it!
