The Devil is Her Lover Now: ‘Abby’ aka ‘The Black Exorcist’

Abby AKA The Black Exorcist was a quickly made Exorcist knock-off from American International Pictures that starred deep-voiced actor William Marshall from Blacula and Pee-Wee’s Playhouse fame (Marshall was The King of Cartoons). The role of Abby was played by the adorable Carol Speed, who had memorable roles in The Mack and The Big Bird Cage. A lawsuit from saw Abby pulled from theaters within the first two months of release. Even so, the film made $4 million dollars at the box office and cost just $200,000 to produce.

Abby is a marriage counselor newly married to a preacher, living in Louisville, Kentucky. Her father-in-law (Marshall) performs an exorcism in Africa and the freed demon—Eshu, Nigerian god of fertility and lust—decides to take up residence in his new daughter-in-law’s body back home. There is, predictably, much puking and swearing in Abby, but one of the most amazing things about the film is that the demon has a southern accent. That makes it really hard to take it seriously when Abby has lines this:

All men are not created equal; better make sure what he’s got first! As a matter of fact, I’m gonna take ol’ long George upstairs AND FUCK THE SHIT OUT OF HIM! THAT’s WHAT I’M GONNA DO!

Or later:

Shit, you ain’t got enough to satisfy me, you impotent son of a bitch!
