Scenes from the Dangerous Minds party + one VERY unexpected guest DJ!

image

Some scenes from inside last week’s Dangerous Minds-hosted SXSW party in Los Angeles held at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery’s Masonic Lodge. On the big screen were live performances simulcast from the Sub Pop Records SXSW Showcase in Austin featuring Spoek Mathambo, THEESatiscation and Niki + The Dove. The event was produced by Natalie Montgomery and curated by Tara McGinley (ME!), and executive produced by Largetail.

Seen in the crowd were Radiohead, Elizabeth Olsen, members of OK Go, artist Tim Biskup,  Amber Tamblyn, Jeff Garland, Aziz Ansari and more. The event was catered by Cool Haus, Grill ‘Em All and Mandoline Grill.

Like us on Facebook or Twitter to hear about the next party.

America’s Funnyman, Neil Hamburger was the event’s MC. His act went over the heads of most attendees—say 80%—but for those more familiar with his unique comedic stylings, the obvious audience discomfort made his shtick even more hilarious that night.

Dangerous Minds wants to invite you to a party

image
The Masonic Lodge in Los Angeles

As pretty much anyone within the reach of the Internet can tell you, this is the week of the big SXSW music, film and interactive festival/convention here in Austin, TX.

The big names are starting to arrive in town. Jay-Z’s in Austin, there are rumors of a super secret Bruce Springsteen show and the whole city is abuzz with movie stars, rock and rollers, rappers, folkies and even a fair selection of computer geeks. [Lots of ironic facial here in Austin, too, but that’s for another discussion.]

Suffice to say, if a nuclear bomb got dropped on Austin this week, the music industry as we currently know it would pretty much cease to exist.

image

But if you can’t make it to Austin yourself (or if I just scared you away with my irresponsible nuclear bomb talk) and if you are lucky enough to live in Los Angeles (I love saying that), fear not because the fine people at MasterCard PayPass® and Google Wallet have teamed up with Cool Hunting and Dangerous Minds to bring a little of what’s cooking in Austin to you, the Dangeorus Minds reader. And they’re going to feed you and treat you to an open bar.

This Friday night, March 16th, at the Masonic Lodge at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, you can catch a big-screen simulcast of the Sub Pop Records showcase, live from Red 7 in Austin. featuring Niki & the Dove, THEESatisfaction and South Africa’s exciting Spoek Mathambo

image

The Los Angeles event will be MC’d by “America’s Funnyman” Neil Hamburger and DJs that evening will include Chris Holmes, Elijah Wood, Brie Larson and TURQUOISE WISDOM.

Food will be served by Grill Em All and Mandoline Grill with sweet deserts from Coolhaus.

Please click this link to RSVP

Eustace Tilley in 3-D by ELMARIELITO

Sasha Frere-Jones, The New Yorker’s pop critic is enthusiastic about Dangerous Minds in 2012!

He writes on The New Yorker “Culture Desk” blog:

Anyone who grew up in record stores knows the cast: the guy who stood next to the register and talked, without surcease, to whoever was stuck behind the counter. The army-jacketed loafs who kept trying to shoplift the same album. The girl who would walk in every day, ask for a single and then walk out, disgusted, until the record arrived. And the guy, sometimes older, who would walk up quietly during a pause in the not-very-active action and say “Have you ever heard…?” Invariably, whatever he was asking about was the most obscure thing you’d encountered that day. Much better, some of these things were worth tracking down and learning from: Sun Ra’s “Disco 3000,” the full-length version of Television’s “Little Johnny Jewel,” or Siouxsie and the Banshees’ cover of Ben E. King’s “Supernatural Thing.”

You’ll notice that the original 1975 seven-minute-plus version of “Little Johnny Jewel” isn’t on YouTube, and neither is the 1981 B-side version of Siouxsie’s “Supernatural Thing.” (Both are on Spotify, though, and I’ve put them on this list, which will change throughout the year and attempt to hold your attention.) But if they did show up on the Web, Dangerous Minds would find it before you. Footage of Morrissey appearing on “Pop Quiz” in 1984, and knowing more about Billy Fury than any American would? Got it. Deborah Harry playing trumpet with Blondie on German TV in 1977? Check. The site leans towards pop detritus from the seventies and eighties but also dips into political commentary and cultural zingers such as this fantastic video about a beauty product called “Fotoshop, by Adobé.”

Dazed Digital, the web arm of the Dazed & Confused publishing group in London have posted a short Q&A with me about Dangerous Minds. Dazed editor-in-chief, Rod Stanley, asked the questions. Read it here.

Dazed Digital: Come the apocalypse, where will you be hanging out and what will you be doing?

Richard Metzger: Tara and I will be with our dogs. We don’t have anything special planned.

(The image is a drawing that Michel Gondry made of me and Tara and the original photo. I’m totally baked as you can see from my eyes. I think Gondry must have known this from the way I am drawn, don’t you think? Tara is the blond, blue-eyed Cheech to my Chong…)

Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce to you, the newest member of the Dangerous Minds team, Marc Campbell:

Marc Campbell was the lead singer and lyricist for THE NAILS who recorded two critically acclaimed albums for RCA records. He’s best known for the cult hit 88 Lines About 44 Women. Later this year, Campbell will be releasing his first solo album, Tantric Machine. He is also working on a book, 44 WOMEN, an erotic memoir spanning the 60s and 70s, from the hippies to the punks. “Having been passionately involved with the social and artistic revolutions of those decades, I see many connections between the two and how one grew out of the other. 44 WOMEN pays tribute to the power and glory of sex, drugs, rock and roll…and LOVE. It is dedicated to the women in my life who did their best to keep me human.” Marc currently lives in Austin, Texas with his beautiful Turkish girlfriend and his chihuahua, Freddy. He likes good wine, rock and roll and hardboiled detective novels. He agrees with Timothy Leary that “intelligence is the ultimate aphrodisiac.”

I’m sure Dangerous Minds readers will enjoy Marc’s eclectic pop culture postings. As some of you have probably already noticed, we’ve often linked to some of Marc’s Facebook posts here and think he’s the perfect addition to the band. Welcome Marc!
